In order to preserve physical evidence in its original state, the crime scene must be protected and preserved as soon as possible. It is the responsibility of the first officer arriving on the scene of a crime to take steps to preserve and protect the area to the greatest extent possible.

All criminal investigations are concerned with the dual aspects that create the possiblility of physical evidence: 1. The individuals (perpetrator and victim) involved. 2. The items employed or touched during the commission of the crime. By its very nature, a crime scene cannot be left untouched by the participants. Physical evidence, in some form, is left behind. The investigators involved should utilize a balanced approach to each inquiryconcerning the collection of the pertinent physical information and formulating connections between that information and the individuals involved in the crime. The enormous potential of physical evidence must be realized by understanding: a. What physical evidence is. b. How to collect and preserve it. c. How to determine the pertinent information it offers. d. How to interpret that information. Absolutely essential at the outset of any investigation is the securing of the integrity of the crime scene. All too often, investigators arrive at the scene to find the original condition disturbed by family members or bystanders whose often zealous attempts to be helpful destroy valuable evidential items. Each emergency scene is unique, but each has one requirement in commonCONTROL. Establish and maintain tight control over emergency scene perimeters quickly and efficiently with this brilliant yellow warning tape. Simply tie one end of the tape around a fixed item, walk around the scenes perimeter and tie it off where desired. The tape is available in six formats to accommodate virtually any situation. Eye-catching black lettering is printed on brilliant yellow or red polyethylene. The tape is three inches (7 1/2 cm) wide by 1,000 feet (300 m) long. The warning repeats every 31 inches. A dispenser box is furnished with each roll.

Rough sketch

SKeTcHeS AT THe Scene OF THe crime PLAY A ViTAL rOLe in THe inVeSTigATiOn.
The finished sketch gives a precise and permanent record of the evidence found at the scene. A photograph is a two-dimensional view of the scene and does not provide accurate information concerning distances between objects that are present at the scene. Photos cannot be clearly understood unless the measured distances between these points are known. A finished drawing or rough sketch of the scene is the most effective way of showing actual measurements and of identifying important items of evidence at the location of the scene. Sketches are separated into three classes: 1. ROUGH SKETCH: The rough sketch is prepared by the investigator at the scenebut not until all photography has been completed and before any evidence has been collected. The sketch does not have to be drawn to scale but should include exact measurements of the surroundings and the location of evidence in relation to the victims location or other important evidence. 2. FINISHED SKETCH: The finished sketch is a duplicate of the rough sketch prepared to scale by using layout templates and exact distances. When the finished sketch is completed, it should immediately be duplicated and forwarded to the proper authorities for safekeeping until the case is resolved. 3. SCALE DRAWING: A scale drawing is used primarily for courtroom presentation. It may be drawn to any scale chosen. The drawing should include all measurements of the rooms, furniture, walls, etc., but not the location of the evidence that has been recovered. When the drawing has been completed, a clear plastic overlay should be attached showing the location of the evidence in the room where it was found. SIRCHMARK evidence tape is made with a matte acetate base featuring a top surface that may be written on with pencil or pen. It is coated with a permanent, quick-setting acrylic adhesive that defies removal from most surfaces. To increase the tapes ability to tear, it is perforated with 3/16 slits at 1/4 intervals. Dual-serrated tape edges add redundancy to the integrity. The tapes top surface is printed in translucent red or blue ink, then overprinted with an opaque black identifier or an agencys custom imprint. The roll is 1 1/2 wide, 0.001 thick, on a 3 core and is backed with 50 lb. stock Kraft liner. SIRCHIEs SIRCH-VUE Tamper Indicator Tape is made of 1.25 mil thick polyester and is red with SIRCH-VUE printed in black ink. The tape is prewound on a three-inch core and is packaged in 180-ft. long rolls. SIRCH-VUE tape can be easily applied to an evidence bag or box using standard hand-dispensing guns and is virtually impossible to remove without evidence of tampering. When applied to items, the tape creates a bond that will reveal the word violated upon tampering. Once the hidden message is revealed it is extremely difficult to reassemble without detection.

Evidence Collection
An important lesson to be learned by the investigator is the value microparticle physical evidence possesses and how to best make full use of it once its collected.
In every crime scene, it is important for the investigator to realize that while the obvious physical evidence must receive full attention, it often will be absent. Microparticle evidence is, however, present in most cases. A knife, gun, signature or burglar tool are immediately recognized as constituting physical evidence. Less often is it considered that dust, microscopic fragments of all types, bacteria, even an odor, equally may be physical evidence, and quite often the most important of all. Using a powerful, yet compact Class IIIa laser, this Laser Trajectory Finder Kit allows the investigator to visualize a bullets trajectory. The Ballistic Laser Pointer may be attached to a Penetration Rod inserted into a bullet hole, or it may be mounted on a tripod and directed into the bullet hole along the bullets actual path. The LTF101 Ballistic Angle Finder is used to determine the angle of trajectory. It can be hand held or mounted on a tripod using the heavy gauge steel Universal Tripod Mount via its built-in magnetic base. The kit includes Centering Cones for use on either the Penetration or MultiColored Photographic Rods to permit a secure fit when rods are inserted into various sized entry and exit bullet holes. A reusable roll of Colored Trajectory String is included when longer distances are involved.

BALLISTIC ANGLE FINDER: Determine the angle of trajectory from the vertical plane using the Finders built-in magnet and the Universal Tripod Mount.

To use the laser to project a beam through a bullet hole, mount the laser onto the Universal Tripod Mount using one of the rod connectors. Attach the tripod mount onto a tripod using the predrilled 1/4-20 mounting hole. Adjust the tripods height and lateral adjustments until the laser beam penetrates through the bullet hole. ballistic Laser Pointer: This is a Class IIIa laser diode with an output of <5mW and operating at a frequency of 630-680nm. Two L1154 batteries power the laser. Momentary ON/OFF switch with moveable collar which permits constant ON. Mountable on the end of a Penetration Rod using a Rod Connector or attach it to the Universal Tripod Mount for use with a photographic-type tripod. Penetration Rods: Four aluminum Penetration Rods are supplied. Inserted into bullet holes, they give a visual approximation of bullet trajectory. To facilitate bullet hole entry, one end of the rod is machined with a bullet-like tip. For more accurate gauge of trajectory, slip Centering Cones on the rod, one at the entry point and one at the exit hole. Cones are then held in place by O-Rings. The taper of the cones provides a snug fit, thus providing more stable positioning of the rod. Multi-Colored Photographic Rods: Six multi-colored rods are included to provide good photographic contrast at the crime scene. Attach it with a Rod Connector to the Penetration Rods already positioned in the bullet holes or use in place of Penetration Rods. Universal Tripod Mount: This device provides a means for mounting the laser to a photographic-type tripod. Using this configuration, the laser beam may be directed into the bullet hole(s). The mount is fabricated from steel to compliment the Ballistic Angle Finder. Stringing Tips and Colored Trajectory String: Once a Penetration Rod is positioned into the bullet hole, a Stringing Tip may be attached to the rod.
