II. PROJECT PROPOSAL

A. Rationale
With the environmental, social, and economic impacts of climate change affecting the
Philippines, it is important to tackle the issues involving environmental conservation. The
common effects of these environmental issues include food insecurity, diseases, vulnerability
to disasters, and social inequality (Center for Social Development, 2023). There is also a link
between economic growth and environmental sustainability; poor environmental quality
negatively affects economic growth (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and
Development, 2016).
A community garden, by definition, is a piece of land that is either gardened or
cultivated by a group of people (American Community Garden Association, 2007). There are
multiple benefits to a community garden, both to the community and to the environment.
Multiple studies shared the same result that community gardens improve the health of
communities (Zick et al, 2013; Castro et al, 2013; Chen et al, 2016). For the environment, a
journal article by Wang and Clark (2016) states that community gardening promotes
biodiversity, alter carbon, nutrient, and water cycles which contribute to global environmental
changes. By having a close source of food, the community can also cut down the carbon
emissions from the transportation of produce (Lumina, 2022).
Composting can take place in urban, suburban, and rural areas (Pai et al.,
2019).Community composting yields many other benefits like social inclusion and
empowerment, local soils improvement, enhancement of food security, local job creation, new
know-how and skills within the local workforce and communities are the key to tackle
sustainability and climate change issues: local initiatives, as campaigns, social movements,
and community projects, can build a sense of community and can improve a local knowledge
and experience (Flowers and Chodkiewicz, 2009; Flachs, 2010; Smith and Sobel, 2010).
Applications of compost can replace fertilizers and peat, operating as plant growth media and
soil conditioners (López et al., 2021), can be used in hobby gardening, land rehabilitation,
mulching in agriculture and landscaping (Inckel et al., 2005)
The project aims to address these issues by involving the youth in environmental
conservation and sustainability. This can be done in two ways: teaching the youths on aspects
of sustainability and environmental conservation, and to give the youths a hands-on approach
through a community garden and compost.
The project also aims to engage the youth in community service for the benefit of the
community and country.

B. Project/Activity Description
This project will introduce the concept and methods in gardening and
composting to teenagers ranging from ages 14-19 years old, of Barangay
Pangasugan, Baybay City, Leyte. Utilizing the available equipment and incorporating
innovative and environment-friendly techniques, workshops will be done by project
facilitators to encourage the youth of those belonging to the said ages to engage in
activities that not only benefit them individually- but also benefit their community. This
project will also give them the opportunity to expand their skill set on physically
demanding and time-consuming tasks, discover new interests, and develop self-
discipline, among others.
The student facilitators will be coordinating with the officials and the
Sangguniang Kabataan committee of the said barangay to gather and meet with the
participating youth. The facilitators will conduct seminar sessions and hands-on
trainings focusing on basic gardening, garden keeping, and maintaining of compost.
Educating them about produce that are advisable to grow in certain vegetation areas.
Types of soil that are suitable for vegetation, types of fertilizers, growth of crops in
different weather conditions, food security awareness, and several topics in relation to
agriculture will be included in the seminar.
Through these activities, the project hopes to mould the youth to be eco-friendly
and teach them how to survive and sustain their daily consumption by using the
products they can harvest from gardening. The project will start by the beginning of
the second semester in February and will wrap up by the end of May. The estimated
duration of this project is about 3 months.
