HUMAN REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
Functions of the reproductive system:
1. Produce male and female hormones and sex cells
2. Ensure the growth and development of offspring
MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
Functions of the male reproductive system
1. Produces, maintains and transports sperm cells and semen
2. Discharges sperm into the female reproductive system
3. Produces and secretes male sex hormones responsible for maintaining the male
reproductive system
Parts of the Male Reproductive System
1. Testis - Produces sperm cells and male sex hormones
2. Scrotum - Sac of skin that holds the testis
3. Epididymis – Transports and stores sperm cells that are produced in the testis;
Brings sperm cells to maturity
4. Penis - Deposits sperms into the vagina during mating
5. Vas Deferens - Carries sperm from testes to urethra
6. Urethra - Carries sperm and urine out of the body
7. Seminal Vesicle - Secretes a fluid that makes up most of the components of semen
8. Prostate Gland – Secretes slightly alkaline milky fluid that is discharged as part of
the semen which nourishes the sperm
9. Bulbourethral Gland – Secretes a thick and clear mucus that lubricates and
neutralizes any trace of acidic urine in the urethra
Sperm Cell
- Smallest cell in the male body
- Male reproductive sex cell or gamete
- Comprised of Tail, Middle Piece and Head
a. Tail – Allows the sperm to move forward
b. Middle Piece – Packed with mitochondria that produces energy used by the sperm
c. Head – Contains the nucleus; Contains enzymes that help the sperm to break through
the cell membrane of an egg cell
FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
Functions of the Female Reproductive System
1. Produces female sex cells (egg cells) and hormones
2. Receives sperm cells from the male
3. Nurtures the development and provides nourishment for new individuals
Parts of Female Reproductive System
1. Ovary – Produces egg cells and female sex hormones
2. Fallopian tube – also known as oviduct; serves as passageway of eggs from the ovary
to the uterus; site of egg fertilization.
3. Uterus – serves as site of egg implantation; it is where the fertilized egg develops.
4. Cervix – connects vagina and uterus.
5. Vagina – receives the penis of male during mating.
Egg cell
- Largest cell in the female body
- Female reproductive sex cell or gamete
- Also known as ova or ovum
