ISE file Task 1 - Long Reading 1. Read the following text about train travel in Europe and answer the 15 questions below. Are trains the way to travel across Europe? Paragraph 1 For some people, the train has always been the best way to travel across Europe. You can watch the beautiful scenery go by while relaxing in your seat. You can talk to other passengers. You can sit comfortably and read a book instead of reading maps to get to your destination. You can also, most importantly, arrive directly in the city centre and not worry about car parking spaces or long journeys from the airport. = Paragraph 2 Of course, one of the best reasons to travel by train is that it’s good for the planet. Trains are more ‘environmentally friendly than planes or cars. While you watch the countryside from your train window, you can be confident that you are damaging it less by train than if you had travelled by car ‘or plane. In Europe, some trains now have an upstairs and downstairs, very similar to London buses. This means that even more people can travel on the same train, so reducing further the impact of train travel on the environment. Paragraph 3 However, keeping stations modem and train lines up to date is expensive. Many train services don't make enough money to cover costs. This means that railway companies often have to make difficult choices, like closing stations in villages and small towns or cutting night trains. They may also reduce services, making travelling across the continent by train more complicated for passengers. Paragraph 4 With the rise of low-cost airines in Europe, increasingly people are choosing to travel by lane, rather than train. These airlines fy to more cites than ever before, and journey times are much shorter than going by train. Internationa fights are simple to book online and, if before it was expensive to fly, row it's becoming cheaper and cheaper. I's dificult fr trains to compete with this. Paragraph 5 It not all bad news for European train travel, however. There are now high-speed train links, between many European cities, e.g. Barcelona and Pars, From the customer service point of view, there are now websites which help passengers book long-distance train travel in afew simple clicks. Passengers today can also benefit from a wide range of special offers and ral passes offering discount prices on travel. Technological advances mean that battery-powered trains could be possible in the near future, o reducing further the impact of train travel on the environment.
