MICRO-PROJECT REPORT

Prepare Short Note On Li-Fi (Light Fidelity)

1.0 Rationale
LiFi is high speed bidirectional networked and mobile communication of data using light.
LiFi comprises of multiple light bulbs that form a wireless network. When an electrical
current is applied to a LED light bulb a stream of light (photons) is emitted from the bulb.

2.0 Aims / Benefits of the Micro Project

The purpose of LiFi technology is to provide a high-speed data communication using visible
light spectrum. Now LiFi is on-going of research, it has a potential advantage that can make a
supplement RF communication and can be used to improve wireless network performance

3.0 Course Outcomes Achieved

1. Troubleshoot mobile handset.

2. Assess cellular system capacity.
3. Assess performance of standards of different cellular mobile systems
4. Select relevant wireless technology suitable for various applications
5. Test the performance of various wireless protocols.

3
4.0. Literature Review

4.1. Overview

Li-Fi is a light communication system that is capable of transmitting data at high speeds over
the visible light, ultraviolet, and infrared spectrums. In its present state, only LED lamps can be
used for the transmission of data in visible light. In terms of its end user, the technology is
similar to Wi-Fi — the key technical difference being that Wi-Fi uses radio frequency to induce
a voltage in an antenna to transmit data, whereas Li-Fi uses the modulation of light intensity to
transmit data. Li-Fi is able to function in areas otherwise susceptible to electromagnetic
interference (e.g. aircraft cabins, hospitals, or the military)

4.2. Block Diagram of an Li-Fi (Light Fidelity) :

Figure 1.1: Block Diagram of an Li-Fi (Light Fidelity)

Power supply produces constant power for lamp driver. Lamp driver connect to the internet connection.
Switch and LED lamp is connected lamp driver with fibre optics cables. LED lamp acts as a
communication source. Microchip, which is located in LED lamp, converts the data into light. High-speed
data is transmitted using light beam.

4
5.0. Actual Methodology Followed

5.1. Introduction to Li-Fi Technology

LiFi (light fidelity) is a bidirectional wireless system that transmits data via LED or infrared light.
It was first unveiled in 2011 and, unlike wifi, which uses radio frequency, LiFi technology only
needs a light source with a chip to transmit an internet signal through light waves. This is an
extraordinary advance over today's wireless networks. LiFi multiplies the speed and bandwidth of
wifi, 3G and 4G. The latter have a limited capacity and become saturated when the number of
users surfing increases, causing them to crash, reducing speeds and even interrupting the
connection. With LiFi, however, its band frequency of 200,000 GHz, versus the maximum 5 GHz
of the wifi, is 100 times faster and can transmit much more information per second. A 2017 study
by the University of Eindhoven obtained a download rate of 42.8 Gbit/s with infrared light with a
radius of 2.5 metres, when the best wifi would barely reach 300 Mbit/s.

5.2. Circuit Diagram of Li-Fi ( Light Fidelity)

Figure 5.2 : Circuit Diagram of Li-Fi Technology

5.3. Working of Li-Fi :

Light Fidelity technology is wireless communication device focused mainly on use of
visible light between violet (800 THz) and red (four hundred THz). Li-Fi is based solely
on propagation of information in defined and uniform fashion via amplitude modulation
of light supply. There is LED transmitter (light emitting) on one end and photo detector
(light sensor) on other. Li-Fi operates very simple and fast. The data input to LED
transmitter is encoded into light by varying the flickering rate at which binary code (1s
and 0s) is generated by LEDs flicker ‘on’ and ‘off’. LED transmitter’s on / off operation
which seems to be invisible to human eye as speed of LEDs is less than microsecond. By
switching ON LED is logical ‘1’ it makes data transfer according to incoming binary
codes, switching OFF is logical ‘0’. Data can be encoded in light by varying rate at which
LEDs flicker on and off to different combinations of 1s and 0s.
5
5.4. Flowchart of Li-Fi (Light Fidelity)

5.5. Difference between Li-Fi and Wi-Fi Technology

1. Wi-Fi(wireless fidelity) and Li-Fi(light fidelity) are two different technologies that are
used to send and receive data wirelessly.
2. In the case of Wi-Fi, we use Routers and Radio Frequency (RF) waves to transmit
data, whereas in Li-Fi we use LED bulbs and Light signals to transmit and receive
data.
3. Another big advantage of LiFi is that the usage of light allows LiFi connections to
occur almost instantaneously because light travels at extremely fast speeds. This
results in faster transmission of data and faster internet connections – about 100 times
faster than speeds achievable by WiFi.

6
5.6. Applications of Li-Fi Technology

1. Security.
2. Dense urban environments.
3. Cellular communication.
4. EMI sensitive environments.
5. Augmented reality.
6. Localised advertising.
7. Underwater communication.
8. Safety environments.

5.7. Advantages of Li-Fi Technology

1. Revolutionary speed. Digital signals carried by light are way faster than those
transmitted via radio waves used in Wi-Fi connections.
2. Top-notch efficiency. LiFi uses a LED light bulb as a medium to transmit data to and
from a device.
3. Better security.
4. Enhanced availability.

5.8. Disadvantages of Li-Fi Technology

1. Limited Range. The fact that light can't penetrate through walls might be a good thing
when it comes to security but this also means that LiFi has a very limited range.
2. Limited Compatibility. Since LiFi is a new technology, not many devices are
compatible with it.
3. Not the answer to slow internet speeds.

7
6.0 Skill Developed / Learning Outcomes of Micro-Project

1. Learn Basic Information About Li-Fi Technology.

2. Study of Li-Fi and Wi-Fi Technology.
3. Study of block diagram of Li-F Technology.

7.0 Applications of Micro-Project

1. Home Automation Using IoT.

2. IoT using Raspberry Pi.
3. Smart Irrigation System.
4. Swarm Robotics.
5. Smart Building Using IoT.
6. Mobile Robotics.
7. Smart Energy Meter Using GSM.
8. Home Automation System.
