º o r authority, in that W o r d o f Life that w a s
r o m the b e g i n n i n g , a n d is n o w c o m e to bear his o w n
living re c o r d in o u r d a y ; w h i c h w o r d a n d spirit o f
truth a n d w i s d o m let n o n e resist, b u t o p e n the e v e r
l a s t i n g d o o r s o f t h e i r s o u l s a n d m i n d s t o t a k e it i n ,
a n d s o y o u will o f the lively h o p e partake, a n d b e a r
t h e true a n d living t e s t i m o n y w i t h us, T h a t the m o r n
i n g star is risen to lead u s o u t o f ourselves, w h e r e
n o t h i n g b u t d a r k n e s s is, a n d w h e r e t h e fallen spirits
k e e p their s t r o n g hold, b i n d i n g a n d putting o u t the
e y e s o f S a m p s o n the Nazarite, t h e figure o f the e t e r
n a l spirit, . . is in all the s o n s o f A d a m , against
w h i c h the g r a n d A p o l l y o n h a t c h e t h his treacherous
c o n s p i r a c y ; for h e h a t h g r e a t indignation against us,
b e c a u s e s u c h love, grace, a n d g o o d n e s s h a t h n o w
a b o u n d e d t o u s i n C h r i s t J e s u s o u r L o r d , w h o is
c o m e to offer h i m s e l f a n effectual s a l v a t i o n in all;
there is n o t a d o o r that h e passeth by, b u t that at o n e
t i m e o r o t h e r h e k n o c k s a t it, a n d w o u l d f i n d e n
t r a n c e in, to r e d e e m a n d f e t c h o u t h i s o w n e t e r n a l
spirit, f r o m u n d e r b o n d a g e , death, a n d m i s e r y : B u t
s u c h are the subtle wiles o f that e n e m y o f all m a n
kind, that h e provides a Delilah for s o m e , to steal a n d
d r a w a w a y their m i n d s , a n d to s e d u c e their m o r e
n o b l e part to that w h i c h is vile, base, a n d sensual.
A n d , then, a n o t h e r m o r e subtle bait h e casts o u t for
t h o s e w h o are mortified, a n d h a v e e s c a p e d those
w o r l d l y c h a r m s , a n d are c o m e to a sober a n d lawful
use o f the things o f this creation, a n d y e t are h e l d
captives t h r o u g h the multiplicity o f m o r t a l cares, b u
s i n e s s e s a n d c o n c e r n s f o r t h e o u t w a r d m a n , w h e r e b y
t h e y are so o v e r c h a r g e d a n d w e i g h e d d o w n in their
spirits, that t h e y c a n n o t g e t u p t o s h a k e off this
earthly dust, to w a l k w i t h G o d in E n o c h ' s state, n e t
o b s e r v i n g that c o u n s e l o f t h e L o r d C h r i s t , - F i r s t to
seek the K i n g d o m o f H e a v e n ; a n d w i t h all g e t t i n g ,
to g et w i s d o m : T h e c o n t r a r y to w h i c h is m o s t uni-"
versally practi sed, in m a k i n g s u r e first o f t h e beast's
k i n g d o m , a n d the p erishing m a m m o n o f unri ghteous:

alas ! this will n o t d o , C h r i s t will n o t b e s e r v e d last.
W h e r e f o r e , le t n o t t he serpent begu ile a n y w h o s e e k
t h e pearl o f C hri st's K i n g d o m , b u t b e wise, to a v o i d
the c h o a k i n g ea rth a n d d r o w n i n g flo ods, a n d trust
the L o r d u p o n his w o r d , w h o wil l c ertainly m a k e
g o o d whatsoever w e part with o n his account, as
there are s o m e w h o c a n witness to G o d ' s truth a n d
f a i t h f u l n e s s i n t h i s m a t t e r . . * * *
A t h i r d c a u t i o n is, f o r t h o se w h o are g o t o u t o f t h e
t h r o n g a n d i n c u m b r a n c e o f worldly multiplicity, a n d
h a v e t h r o w n off all t h o s e w e i g h t s a n d sins w h i c h d o
s o easily beset t h e m ; they m u s t k n o w , that all this
wi ll n o t fully secure t h e m , t h o u g h it b e a v e r y g o o d
ground-work, a n d greatly advantageous for the r e a r
º of God's perfect tabernacle within them, for
i n g
the f o l l o w i n g glories to rest u p o n it; b u t b e a d v e r
tised f r o m the holy a n d true foresight of the spirit o f
Jesus, w h o k n o w s the d a n g e r s a n d perils w h i c h a t
t e n d this state also ; w h i c h , t h o u g h they h a v e escaped'
t h e worldly b o n d a g e a n d earthly pollutions, y e t s p i
ritual defilements m a y r e m a i n , w h i c h are o f m o r e
d a n g e r o u s c o n s e q u e n c e t h a n briary cares a n d w o r l d l y
distractions; for w e h a v e n o t o n l y to d o w i t h a birth
o f flesh a n d blood, b u t th ere are internal p o w e r s a n d
principalities of a n higher descent, w h i c h join their
forces w i t h the rational spirit, w h i c h is t h e m o r e
w i s e a n d sober part in m a n , a n d therefore m o s t
readily take u p o n t h e m to prescribe l a w s a n d rules
for the superior soul to w a l k by, w h o finding itself
fallen, stands in great n e e d o f a n h e l p a n d g u i d e , to
b r i n g it o u t o f this w r e t c h e d p l u n g e a n d c o n f u s e d
state; b e i n g c o n v i n c e d b y Christ the true life a n d
l i g h t r i s e n w i t h i n , h o w t h e c a s e s t a n d s w i t h it, a n d
t h e r e b y m a d e eagerly desirous to b e set.free f r o m
those i n w a r d u s u r p i n g p o w e r s , w h i c h c o m e w i t h all
deceivableness to c i r c u m v e n t a n d k e e p the soul in
the strong hold of a rational sense, w h i c h m u s t b e
iquitted. A n d n o w the e n l i g h t n e d soul feeling the

w h o m y o u r e c e i v e s p i r i t u a l m e d i c i n e ,
c a u t i o n e d f r o m
a n d whether they be such w h o h a v e the true balsam
a n d tincture o f life to g i v e forth f r o m the v e r y
unction of G o d resting in t h e m ; for n o other c a n be

white'stone, w h i c h k n o w s only h o w to pour out his
n a m e as precious o i n t m e n t f r o m vessel to vessel, are
p h y s i c i a n s o f n o value. Therefore, while y e are in
t h e state o f minority, a n d h a v e n e e d to b e u n d e r
p a s t o r s a n d t e a c h e r s , till y o u a r e c o m e u p t o t h e
highest f o r m , r e a d y p r e p a r e d a n d qualified for the
g r e a t m a s t e r teacher to u n d e r t a k e y o u , e v e n the
H o l y Spirit, w h o will perfect w h a t e v e r w a s l a c k i n g in
o t h e r teachings, a n d t h r o u g h other m e d i u m s , for
w h i c h direct your eye , waiting in a peaceable c o n
cord a n d silent h a r m o n y , in y o u r o w n Jerusalem
within , w h e r e u p o n is to be wri tten, Holiness to the
Lord, in every proper ty; a n d t hen y o u will c o m e to
k n o w the fresh pasture-springs, w h i c h are o n l y u n d e r
t h e breaking-up-seal o f the h o l y ºunction, w h e r e n o
defiled foot h a t h e v e r c o m e to raise the dust, to d i s

m o c k o f that w h i c h the A l p h a a n d O m e g a will

h ibited the Publisher h e r e o f f r o m altering the w a y
a n d m a n n e r o f t h e revealing o f these great a n d d e e p

n i g h t o f s l u m b e r ; f o r t h e d a y is b r o k e n , a n d t h e
morning-star m a y be discerned. Consider to w h a t
a life o f g l o r y a n d i m m o r t a l i t y y e a r e called, it is
great a n d wonderful indeed; yet k n o w , the east-gate
n o w will o p e n to those that earnestly k n o c k thereat;
so that there is a certain possibility to g e t u p u n t o all
these degrees o f glory: W h e r e f o r e let n o n e doubt,
but be girded with the o m n i p o t e n c y o f faith, w h i c h
w i l l j t h e w a y swiftly, l e a v i n g all u n b e l i e v i n g
loiterers behind. A race w e h a v e to run; s o m e m a y
n o t b e ye t set out, others n e w l y e n g a g e d , a n d others
a g o o d w a y in t h e r a c e ; b u t b l e s s e ſ are t h e y w h o
shall a t t h e p r i z e first c o m e , t h a t s o t h e y m a y r e t u r n
to strengthen a n d encourage their c o m p a n i o n s in the
race, w h o m a y see t h e r o s y - g a r l a n d o f victory in
their h a n d s , a n d the d i a d e m o f precious stones, as
the pr ize w h i c h they h a v e w o n , w h i c h doth well d e
serve to be run h a r d for; not delaying so m u c h time
a s to look behind, b eing o n c e set out, but so run
that w e m a y obtain. B u t it m a y b e q u e s t i o n e d , —
W h o , a n d w h e r e are those w h i c h are so resolute a n d
strong in spirit, as to hold out to the e n d o f the
r a c e : . F o r this, n o n c c a n b e f o u n d i n d e e d , b u t s u c h
a s a r e risen w i t h C h r i s t f r o m t h e d e a d ; h e is a n d
m u s t b e t h e r a č e r in u s ; for all o t h e r legs w e r u n

glories, crowns, joys, gifts, p o w e r s in the H o l y Spirit,
w h o will m a g n i f y his office in a c t i n g a n d w o r k i n g all
in the b o d y of the resurrection, concerning w h i c h I
shall n o further enlarge, b u t refer y o u to w h a t is
treated of in the former, a n d this the following R e
velations. I shall n o w cease, a n d s h u t u p all in that
springing fountain, from w h e n c e this bundle of R e
velations did proceed, h a v i n g a g o o d h o p e a n d c e r
tain.persuasion, that the i o d will b e w i t h his o w n
t e s t i m o n y in a light ray, s p r e a d i n g o v e r all the d a r k
n e s s o f t h o s e m i n d s t h a t s h a l l a t t e n d a n d r e c e i v e

m a y a p p e a r abs truse, deep, a n d mys tica l, a n d h a r d
to b e u n d e r s t o o d ; yet to others, w h o are c o m e u n d e r

for tidings a r e c o m e to m a k e all things r e a d y for
h i m : L e t it a p p e a r w h o t h e w i s e v i r g i n s a r e , b y

only for a visit or salvation, B ú t ‘for a n eterial m a r

v e r y i m m o r t a l p a r t ; a n d t h e r e f o r e t h e w o u n d is f o u n d
s o d e e p that n o m e d i c i n e c a n b e f o u n d to r e a c h it;
b u t Christ, the in-breathed w o r d , w h o o n l y c a n
reach the soul's original g r o u n d ; a n d being the
c r e a t i n g fiat, c a n a l o n e m a k e all n e w a g a i n , a c c o r d
ing to the highest uniformity o f the express deity.
A n d this c o m e t h first to b e k n o w n in a fiery r a y o f
love-light, that discovers w h e r e the root o f º
lie ; a n d w h e n the spirit o f the soul c o m e s , b y the
w o r d o f life, to u n d e r s t a n d its o w n original, a n d b y
w h a t m e a n s it h a t h b e e n c o r r u p t e d a n d captiva ted,
it is m a d e full willi ng a n d e a g e r to j o i n in w i t h that
Chris t, w h i c h riseth f r o m t h e centre-light in its o w n
soul, to r e d e e m a n d reconc ile all to himself, that w a s
a l i e n a t e d f r o m h i m i n t h e b i r t h o f s t r i f e . T h u s

all their glorious objects, ranks, a n d orders, w h i c h
m u s t n e e d s m a k e this w o r l d l o o k base a n d vile to a
soul that is c o m e n a k e d a n d free o u t o f t h e original
w o m b , as b e g o t t e n a g a i n f r o m the d e a d , rising in a
perfect clarified b o d y of light, a n d being quite r e
covered f r o m that desperate lapsed state that w o u l d

c o n c e r n i n g this N e w J e r u s a l e m state, w h a t the a p

of such purity ; so o n the other hand, I s a w a n u m e
r o u s c o m p a n y g a t h e r e d to it f r o m all q u a r t e r s ; t h e
trumpet-shout of Jerusalem's G r e a t K i n g , calling.

S u c h is the n a t u r e o f this secret f l a m i n g matter, that
it feeds, strengthens, a n d clarifies a n a k e d spirit all
at o n c e . T h e n w a s I inquisitive to k n o w the s u b
s t a n c e o r g r o u n d o f it, b u t it w a s r e p l i e d : —

w h i c h s w o r d is n o t h i n g els e b u t th e p o w e r o f t h e
Spirit o f Life, w h i c h is Christ's D e i t y in his eternal

is Christ's rising life in his saints, e n a b l i n g t h e m to
c o n q u e r t h e e s s e n c e s o f t h e e a r t h l y life, w h i c h is t h e
beast, in themselves. N o w this t a k i n g a w a y o f p e a c e
f r o m t h e e a r t h l y life, is a b l e s s e d i n t r o d u c t i o n t o its
f i n a l d e s t r u c t i o n , w h i c h is t o f o l l o w u p o n it, a c c o r d
i n g to the intention o f the K i n g l y R e d e e m e r .
- T h e o p e n i n g o f the T h i r d Seal,
the Third Seal. I s h e w e d Christ in u s riding o n a b l a c k

T h e w i s d o m o f G o d c o u l d n o better w a y contrive,
for the l a y i n g o f a s o u n d a n d sinless f o u n d a t i o n for
the N e w J e r u s a l e m , a c c o r d i n g to this fore-contrived
m o d e l , a s b y e x p r e s s w o r d it c a m e u n t o m e , t h a t
n o n e c o u l d or e v e r s h o u l d c o m e to t h e o p e n i n g o f the
S e v e n t h S e a l , till all t h i s w a s f u l l y f i n i s h e d ; a n d I
m u s t g i v e w i t n e s s t h a t it is a - d o i n g , a n d it d o t h n o t
s e e m g r i e v o u s b e c a u s e o f w h a t is to s u c c e e d a n d f o l
l o w , w h e n t h e n e x t S e a l shall b e o p e n e d .
T h u s I h a v e b e e n d r i v e n o n a c c o r d i n g to e x p e r i
e n c e a n d Revelation, to o p e n the mystical m e a n i n g
o f w h a t is written in t h e Revelation, a c c o r d i n g as it
is to b e fulfill ed in H o l y a n d H e a v e n - b o r n Saints;
t h o u g h I also well k n o w , that their o p e n i n g will
c a u s e a terriblé d a y o f w o e to the rebellious a n d u n
re generate, for t h e y w h o s hall t h e n b e f o u n d in t h e
Be ast's k i n g d o m , m u s t l o o k to fall a n d g o into p e r
d i t i o n w i t h h i m ; f o r a s t h e r e a r e i n w a r d vials t o b e
p o u r e d forth, s o there are o u t w a r d phials to b e p o u r e d

b e e n b o u n d , w h o are to fight the L a m b ' s battle, a n d

d i d testify it w o u l d b e s u c h , a s i n n o f o r e g o i n g S e a l
h a d b e e n k n o w n . B u t h e s a i d w i t h a l , —
‘ I a m the L o r d , s t r o n g a n d m i g h t y , w h o will p r e
vail, a n d w h o l l y overturn the k i n g d o m o f the D r a
g o n a n d B e a s t : C o n t i n u e thou, whilst I a m d o i n g
this in the m o s t h o l y secret o f m y being, w h e r e the
c o n s t a n t m e d i a t o r s h i p a n d offerings m a y g o o n , as
t h e strength o f a n a r m y that shall all o v e r c o m e ,
t h r o u g h t h e b u r n i n g i n c e n s e that is m i n g l e d b y the
a n g e l , w h o s e p l a c e is to s t a n d a l w a y s at t h e altar;
n o r hurt or suffering b y all this conflagration, shall

B u t n o w , a s o f o l d t i m e , i n t h e first elect c h u r c h
a n d people, G o d w a s ministered to, a n d w o r s h i p p e d
in a d a r k formal, m i x e d m a n n e r , g o i n g u p a n d d o w n
i n a m o v e a b l e t a b e r n a c l e , till S o l o m o n ' s d a y , w h e r e
t h e typical temple, w h i c h w a s to b e filled w i t h the
glory, w a s built, e v e n so since the t i m e o f the S o n of .
M a n ' s offering u p himself, the H o l y O n e hath
w a l k e d in clouds, a n d h a t h b e e n w o r s h i p p e d after a n
imperfect rate, a n d therefore h e h a t h prepared a
b u r n i n g f l a m i n g d a y for all his vessels to p a s s through,
to k n o w w h e t h e r t h e y b e s a n c t u a r y p r o o f or n o : F or

N o w , a c c o r d i n g to this divine interpretation o f t h e
S i x t h Seal, w e m a y k n o w h o w n e a r the e n d o f time,
a n d the p a s s i n g a w a y o f the old h e a v e n s a n d earth
i n o u r s e l v e s a r e ; f o r t h a t it is w e a r e to l o o k to, a t
e v e r y Seals' o p e n i n g : F o r f r o m t h e first to t h e last
t h e r e is a s o u n d i n g t r u m p e t to b r i n g r u i n a n d d e s o l a
tion, to t h e first six day's creation, b e c a u s e o f sin
a n d the curse w h i c h c a m e in b y the serpent's sting,
b y w h i c h m e a n s t h e B e a s t h a t h erected his k i n g d o m ,
a n d c o r r u p t e d the w h o l e principle o f time, w h i c h t h e
H o l y O n e h a t h suffered n o w so m a n y t h o u s a n d years,
d u r i n g w h i c h all just m e n died, indeed, in t h e faith
o f this p r o p h e c y , b u t attained n o t to that degree,
w h i c h is to u s h e r in the H e a v e n l y N e w J e r u s a l e m in
h e r glory. B u t t h e L o r d is n o w stirring, a n d in g o o d
e a r n e s t is s o u n d i n g his t r u m p e t s for battle; a n d there
is that in u s w h i c h d o t h w i t n e s s h e is g o i n g o n g r a r
T h e s e a o f t h e B e a s t c o n t a i n s great a b u n d a n c e o f
riches, a c c o r d i n g to its perishable k i n d ; besides, there
is a n o v e r f l o w to the m e r c h a n t s o f it, t h a t are in a
free trade to u p h o l d that worldly k i n g d o m , w h e r e i n
all n u r s e r y o f sin's witchcraft is m a i n t a i n e d . B u t
a c c o r d i n g as I w a s called u p o n to c o m e a n d see, h o w
t h e B e a s t a n d all his rich trafficking s e a is to b e d r i e d

t he creating w o r d in his m e m b e r s , w h o are entrusted
w i t h this active p o w e r f u l b o d y , suitable for the m a
n a g e m e n t o f s u c h a k i n g d o m , in w h i c h the soul at
first r e i g n s invisibly o v e r all its i n w a r d m o t i o n s a n d
properties; as o v e r people, nations, a n d l a n g u a g e s , all
w h i c h , b y w i s d o m ' s p o w e r , are k e p t in a G o d - l i k e t e m
p e r a t u r e , s u c h as m a y e x p r e s s t h e L o r d is c o m e to
personate himself in a righteous a n d peaceable g o
v e r n m e n t , s u c h as n e v e r y e t h a t h b e e n in the w o r l d
since A d a m lost paradise.
O B J E c t i o n . — B u t shall this b e a n universal reign f
A n d a f t e r w h a t m a n n e r s h a l l it b e m o d a l i z e d i n t h i s
visible creation ? T h a t w h i c h is internal a n d spiritual
w i l l n o t b e s o m u c h t a k e n n o t i c e of, t h o u g h it c o m e s
t o this h e i g h t o f p e r f e c t i o n , for it m a y b e h i d a m o n g s t
a small n u m b e r , yet m a y b e k n o w n b u t o n l y to o n e
a n o t h e r , t h e g e n e r a l i t y still a b i d i n g u n d e r t h e beast's
p o w e r a n d n a m e , w h i c h is his a c c u r s e d n a t u r e .
T h i s Q u E R Y w a s a n s w e r e d m e in the plainness o f
truth, t h u s ; – T h a t this glorious reign w o u l d n o t b e
universal, n o r b r e a k o u t all at o n c e , b u t g r a d u a l l y
f r o m the b u r n i n g unction, w h i c h p r e p a r e s Christ's
w a y , a n d m a k e s r o o m for his k i n g d o m : T h e r e is
m u c h t o b e d o n e first, a n d h e r e m u s t a b e h e a d i n g g o
b e f o r e , a n d a p l u c k i n g u p all that h a t h m a d e d e
solate, a n d after all this a c o m i n g u p a g a i n in t h e
r e s u r r e c t i o n ; w h i c h is a r a r e a t t a i n m e n t i n d e e d ; f o r
it is a resurrection to a state w h o l l y s o u n d a n d sinless,
e v e n t h e s a m e t o w h i c h o u r L o r d w a s r a i s e d a f t e r
death. T h e p r o p h e c y d o t h n o t say, T h a t all t h e d e a d
w e r e rai sed u p to reign w i t h Christ a t h o u s a n d y e a r s ;
b u t it is expressly declared, that the rest o f the d e a d
did n o t rise till the t h o u s a n d y e a r s w e r e e x p i r e d ;
f r o m w h e n c e it w a s clear ed u p to m e , that m a n y
m a y b e g o n e t h r o u g h this spiritual d y i n g , a n d y e t
continue dead, whilst others are raised, according to
that word, ‘Blessed are they w h o are partakers of
this first R e s u r r e c t i o n ; ' — s o t h a t it will n o t b e u n i

versal. B u t , b e s i d e s this, t h e r e a r e t h o s e w h o a r e u n
r i g h t e o u s , o f w h o m it is p r o p h e c i e d , — ‘ L e t h i m t h a t
is unjust, b e unjust still ; ’ — t h e s e shall i n n o w i s e
enter into Chr ist's k i n g d o m , b u t b e shut o u t o f the
h o l y city, w h i c h shall rule o v e r t h e m . F o r this k i n g
d o m shall n o t o n l y b e i n w a r d , in the propert ies o f t h e
soul, b u t shall also e x e r c i s e its d o m i n i o n o v e r this
visible principle; a n d those w h o are u n c o n v e r t e d shall
b e as stubble before the bright f l a m i n g c h e r u b i m s ,
w h o in the L a m b ' s p o w e r shall reign o n the e a r t h : -
T h e elect shall r e a p a n d l o n g e n j o y the creating
w o r k s o f their o w n h a n d s ; for w i t h n o less p o w e r
shall the representatives o f Christ the L o r d b e i n
vested. T h i s d e c l a r e d m u s t b e t h r o u g h o u t all worlds,
that Christ will a p p e a r in his saints that are risen
a g a i n to b e a r the t r o p h y o f a d e a t h c o n q u e r i n g
p o w e r . -
N o w t h e n e x t e n q u i r y is, W h e n is t h e t i m e t h a t
this m a y b e e x p e c t e d , b e c a u s e hitherto there is b u t
v e r y s m a l l a p p e a r a n c e o f a n y s u c h t h i n g 2 t h a t is,
W h o is it qualified in s u c h a h i g h d e g r e e a s this h e a
v e n l y k i n g d o m requires — W h o are willing to b e
b e h e a d e d , a n d t h r o u g h d e a t h to b e m a d e partakers o f

B u t y e t n o t w i t h s t a n d i n g all t h e s e o b j e c t i o n s o f fear
a n d unbelief, a n d t h e w h o l e t h r o n g o f d i s c o u r a g i n g
spirits o f the sensible life, w h o s e c r y is, W h o is able
to suffer all this — F a i t h a n d love are g i v e n to the
w o r t h y pretenders to this k i n g d o m , w h e r e b y t h e y are
carried as w i t h w i n g s , o v e r all the floods o f fear a n d
d i s c o u r a g e m e n t ; neither shall t h e y w a n t either r e s o
lution o r valour to w a d e t h r o u g h t h e greatest o p p o
s i n g difficulties, w h o a r e d e s i g n e d f o r it, a n d f o u n d
in the L a m b ' s roll. A d o u b l e a n d tre ble portion o f
his spirit the L o r d h a t h said h e will a d d to t h e m , w h o
firs t shall a b r o g a t e the l a w o f sense, w h i c h h a t h b e e n
t he chief h i n d r a n c e o f his k i n g d o m , w h i c h therefore

there to be regenerated into a n heavenly corporiety,

t h e r e b y will b e distinguished f r o m those w h o stick
fast in corrupted nature, a n d are not regenerated into
this bright i m a g e , a n d f r o m those also w h o t h o u g h '
they are regenerated according to the inward m a n ,
yet beingentangled in the thicket o f the m a n y things,
a r e f a i n t o s t a y b e h i n d , till t h o s e w h o b y t h e i r h a r d '
pressing forward, h a v e o v e r c o m e the world, beast,
a n d d r a g o n . T h e r e f o r e b e first i n s t a t e d i n t h e L o r d ' s
personaſ p o w e r ; for the L o r d assured nie, that this
w o u l d b e the w a y h e w o u l d take in this present a g e ,
to instate s o m e w h o are k n o w n to h i m ; in his p e r
sonal reign, that they m a y enjoy here o n earth their
first h e a v e n s , to t h e terror, grief, a n d e n v y o f s u c h ,
w h o h a v e b e e n h a r d a n d cruel in t h e beast's k i n g d o m ,
restraining their g o o d things f r o m the l a m b s o f
C h r i s t ' s f o l d . H e r e it w i l l b e a s i n t h e c a s e o f D i v e s '
a n d Lazarus, they shall see those w h o were most d e s
picable in their eyes, to b e greatly b e l o v e d a n d h o
n o u r e d , as b e i n g entrusted w i t h a k i n g d o m , in w h i c h
t h e y shall reign as the true b o r n co-heirs w i t h their
h e a d , Christ, b e a r i n g rule o v e r all those w h o h a v e

a m i x e d state, a n d divided b e t w e e n the t w o k i n g d o m s

B u t it m a y b e q u e r i e d , — H o w c a n this h e a v e n l y
virgin endure to c o m e d o w n u p o n this defiled earth,
to multiply her offspring in it? . F o r without doubt

Y e t nothing of this shall be able to prevent G o d ' s
|...". w h o will a p p e a r w i t h his virgin in the divine
b o d y a n d c o v e r h e r w i t h o n e e l e m e n t , w h i c h will
t o r m e n t all evil spirits, a n d w e a r t h e m out, w h o c a n
- a s little e n d u r e h e r v i r g i n p u r i t y , a s t h e v i r g i n spirit
c a n b e a r their poison. T h e r e f o r e a separation is
m a d e , as w e read, that the w o m a n h a d a place p r e
p a r e d for h e r in the wilderness, w h i c h signifies t h e
'spirit o f faith, w h i c h c a r r i e s it f r o m off t h e s e n s u a l
g r o u n d , w h e r e t h e c o n c o u r s e o f fluttering spirits o f
all k i n d s are; w h e r e f o r e this is n o p l a c e for G o d ' s
‘virgin to stay in, s h e m a y b e in d a n g e r o f h a v i n g h e r
chastity violated, o r o f b e i n g d r o w n e d w i t h t h e

w h o is c o m e to fulfil old p r o p h e c i e s in t h e s u b s t a n c e
o f his o w n p e r s o n , that is b o r n o f t h e v i r g i n ; f r o m
w h o m w e m a y e x p e c t the perfecting o f that, w h i c h
all f o r e g o i n g ministration a n d manifestations h a v e
left short, in r e g a r d o f those w o n d e r s w h i c h shall b e

true virgin in h e r beautiful f o r m . T h e divine m o u l d
f o r h e r s h a p e is a g a i n f o u n d , a c c o r d i n g to w h a t w a s
b e f o r e either a n g e l s o r m a n w e r e f o r m e d , w h i c h is

T h e First Faculty set before m e , w a s that o f Seeing,
seated in h e r eye, w h i c h a p p e a r e d like a fiery ray,
a n d s p a r k l e d as a star, p i e r c i n g all t hings in the
heights a n d depths. A n e y e that s l u m b e r s not, b u t
w a t c h e t h at e a c h centre gate, to s p y w h a t g o e t h
in a n d out, to p r e v e n t all violation o f h e r virgin c h a s
tity, that h e r v o w m a y n o t b e b r o k e n , b y w h i c h s h e
s t a n d s e n g a g e d to h er h u s b a n d .
T h e S e c o n d F a c u l t y is that o f H e a r i n g , seated in
t h e ear, w h i c h m u s t b e so chaste as to turn a w a y
f r o m all c o r r u p t a n d u n s a v o r y l a n g u a g e , w h i c h s p e a k s
n o t G o d forth in his i m m e n s e love a n d g o o d n e s s , o r
in his greatness a n d sovereignty. T h e true virgin's
e a r is t u r n e d i n w a r d , to listen t o t h e s w e e t v o i c e o f
h e r b r i d e g r o o m ; s h e waits for th e d r o p p i n g o f his
lips, w h o s e w o r d s are the st rength a n d m a r r o w o f h e r

T h e T h i r d O r g a n i c a l Faculty is that o f S m e l l i n g :

s w e e t ravishing odours, w h i c h a r e sufficient to r e n e w

w i t h C h r i s t , s h o u l d b u t v e n t u r e d o w n a n d d e b a s e itself,
b y c o m p l y i n g w i t h w h a t it h a t h r e j e c t e d o f this w o r l d ' s
l a w s a n d r u d i m e n t s , it is p o s s i b l e t h e k i n g d o m m a y b e
rent a w a y , as in Saul's case; n a y , in S o l o m o n himself,
G o d w o u l d n o t r e m i t it, w h e n h e d e p a r t e d f r o m t h e
‘ L o r d in a n y degree, b u t received a r e b u k e to p u r p o s e
for it; all w h i c h w a s laid before m e , for the h o l d i n g fast
t h e sceptre in humility, purity, fear, righteousness,
a n d h o l y c o u r a g e o u s n e s s , that I m i g h t s o h o l d o u t in
this first a n d invisible r e i g n o f t h e l a m b o f G o d , that
h e m a y c o m e to b e visibly m a g n i f i e d , for the c o n v i c
tion o f those that a r e yet alienated b y a spirit o f u n b c
lief, n o t k n o w i n g the p e a c e a b l e fruits o f this k i n g d o m
w i t h i n , w h i c h in n o w i s e c a n m i n g l e w i t h w h a t is o f
t h e starry g o v e r n m e n t , as b e i n g o f quite a n o t h e r s p i
rit. It neither careth n o r s e e k e t h for r e g e n c y or d i g
wnity f r o m these inferior planets, w h i c h give t h e world's
w e a l t h a n d h o n o u r to t h e vilest a n d b a s e s t o f m e n ;

sessed b y m e : y e t n o t here s o resting, as n o t to e x
p e c t a n d believe, b u t that this invisible k i n g d o m will

a n d stars o f this inferior o r b t o b o w b e f o r e it; f o r t h e
a s s u r a n c e o f w h i c h , w e c a n desire n o fuller n o r b e t t e r
evidence, t h a n the total a n d victorious reign o f G o d
o v e r all the sin-infected properties: for let this b e b u t
f i n i s h e d , a n d it will b e a c e r t a i n i n t r o d u c t i o n t o t h e
manifestative reign o f the H o l y G h o s t , w h o will n o t
f e a r to f a c e t h e locusts o f t h e e a r t h , t h a t h a v e h a d
their fulness a n d blessings f r o m the beast's k i n g d o m ,
w h o s e glory will certainly wither a n d die a w a y . N a y ,
t h e y w h o are o f the n u m b e r o f Israelites, a n d y e t
a b i d e in t h e a b o m i n a t i o n o f self-love, will b e s o a s h a m
e d a n d c o n f o u n d e d at t h e o p e n i n g o f this plentiful
store, that will so a b u n d a n t l y s h o w e r d o w n u p o n t h e m
t h a t sit o n t h e t h r o n e w i t h C h r i s t , t h a t all t h o s e w h o
h a v e d e t a i n e d these w o r l d l y g o o d s , shall h a v e s u c h
i n d i g n a t i o n a g a i n s t t h e m s e l v e s f o r it, t h a t t h e y s h a l l
t h r o w their g o l d a n d silver to the bats a n d m o l e s
o f t h e earth, a n d t a k e h o l d o f t h e skirts o f t h e t h r o n e
princes, a n d c r y to p a r t a k e o f their lot a n d portion.
F o r it w i l l b e o f t h a t q u a l i t y a n d d a i l y i n c r e a s i n g s u b
stance, for t h e satisfying o f all k i n d o f requirings o f
t h e o u t w a r d b o d y , that J a c o b ' s all a n d e n o u g h will
m o s t surely b e possesed w i t h o u t curse or s o r r o w , w h i c h
w e k n o w h a v e a t t e n d e d t h e w h o l e visible treasury g o t
ten b y the o u t w a r d w i s d o m a n d art o f m a n ; w h o
h a v e thereby s o idolized the w o r k s o f their h a n d s , that
t h e y h a v e quite r u n t h e m s e l v e s out o f t h o s e blessings,
w h i c h c o m e in b y g i v i n g u p their w h o l e m i n d a n d
w i l l t o b e t h e L o r d ' s d o m i n i o n .
T h i s is t h e s u r v i ving k i n g d o m that sh all s p r e a d f r o m
t he root o f Christ rise n u p in his perfec t stature, w i t h
in a n d t h r o u g h o u t the soul's e s s e n c e to d e i f y it, s o that
it m a y a b i d e i n the unalterable s u b s t a n c e o f a G o d

sin, c u r s e o r s o r r o w f u l w e a k n e s s , w h i c h will b e t h e
m o s t w o n d e r f u l salvation that ever y e t w a s b r o u g h t to
m a n i f e s t a t i o n . F o r w h i c h c a u s e it will n e c e s s a r i l y
follow, that this visible k i n g d o m will b e also establish
e d a n d b e c o m e as a lifted u p e n s i g n , that all flesh m a y
t r e m b l e a n d fall b e f o r e it, w h i c h d i d s o i n s u l t a n d lift
u p itself in a r r o g a n c y . W h e n t h e L o r d w a s b u t as
y e t c o m e in his first reign, n o s h e w o f g l o r y w a s s e e n
to o u t w a r d a p p e a r a n c e , b u t rather d a r k clouds o f s u f
ferings; w h i c h b e i n g rightly i m p r o v e d m a k e s m e e t
for t h e full p o s s e s s i o n o f t h e first a n d s e c o n d k i n g d o m ,
e a c h o n e in their h i g h graduation, for c o m i n g forth
to glorification, as are n o w in the h i d d e n spheres,
w h e r e the h i g h t h r o n e glories are m a n i f e s t e d in a n o
ther m a n n e r , o f k i n g l y p o m p a n d splendor, t h a n w h a t
e v e n , hath, or i n d e e d c o u l d possibly b e figured o u t
h e r e , till t h e k i n g d o m itself d o w o r k o u t visibly, a n d
t h e n w e shall k n o w w h a t w e at present a r e k n o w n o f
o u r G o d for, in order to this excelling reign, w h i c h is
to a n s w e r to the royalty, purity a n d p o m p , that G o d

It is fully a s s u r e d m e , t h a t G o d h a t h t a k e n into his e y e
a n d love election at this v e r y d a y , those w h o shall c o m e
to sit in p r i n c e l y m a j e s t y a n d g r e a t d o m i n i o n in t h e
i n w a r d r e g e n c y o f t h e soul, c o n q u e r i n g the t h w a r t i
m o t i o n s o f sin, a n d their o w n passions; for faithful
ness, truth a n d love, to carry t h r o u g h here, will b e
signs a n d e v i d e n c e sufficient w h a t G o d will further
e x a l t u n t o . I n t h e i n t e r i m , w h o s o e v e r h a t h a t t a i n e d
t o t h e first k i n g d o m , in w i s d o m sanctification, a n d
in the excelling charity, k n o w that these will g i v e t h e
m i g h t y o n s e t for entrance, into t h e u t m o s t b o u n d s o f
this everlasting k i n g d o m , w h i c h w e shall n o t t h i n k
it o n l y sufficient to p r a y for, b u t to b e d o i n g all t h a t

pear above ground, which have long lain buried under
it: it is the k i n g flower o f the w h o l e paradisical
spring, that protects the whole, transmuting, a l l
into one entire body of love, that doth extend a n d give
forth itself in all spiritual bountifulness, a c c o r d i n g to
its h i g h n a t u r e a n d p r o p e r t y . It is n o t s h u t u p to itself
u p o n a n y c o n s i d e r a t i o n , a s to w h a t it p o s s e s s e t h a n d
e n j o y s ; for it h o l d s n o t h i n g in p r o p r i e t y , w h a t e v e r its
lot is, b u t all is f r e e t o t h e disciples o f t h e s a m e d e s :
cent a n d birth with himself; this . . . ; withhold
f r o m a n y o f t h e i r necessities, f o r it s e e k s n o t its o w n .
T h e n it h a t h also a virtual p o w e r , as m a d e to inherit
the best o f riches a n d substan ce of the ever las ting
k i n g d o m , to c o n v e y a n d freely dist ribute o f thi s i n e x
haustible treasury to impoveris hed souls, a n d to r e
lieve t h e m that are in great distr ess; w h i c h p o w e r c a n
pass in us as an high virtual balsam, to heal the w o u n
ded, w h o are u n d e r the striking of the scorpion sting of
t h e serpent. T o r this love is a m i n i s t e r i n g f l a m e , w h e r e
holy passiveness a n d humility are as the o p e n d o o r for
its access, a n d t h e r e c h e r i s h a n d f e e d it w i t h w h a t its
present, degree doth require. Charity is furnished
w i t h all s o r t s a n d s t o r e s ; it is G o d ' s s t e w a r d u p o n
earth, w h o m h e d a r e trust witth the care o f his h o u s
h o l d , w h o a r e i n spiritual h u n g e r a n d n a k e d n e s s . It
is a m o s t infallible truth, '...". will appoint s u c h
holy overseers in his n e w b o r n church, that shall r e c o
y e r the apostolical spirit a n d p o w e r , that h a t h b e e n
lost o u t o f t h e e a r t h , a n d it shall rise a s a m o r e b r i g h t
m o r n i n g star, a n d m u l t i p l y it i n t o a g e n e r a t i o n t h a t
will b e all lovely, in w h i c h G o d m a y see himself. F o r
w h i c h e n d , the k i n g d o m a n d d o m i n i o n is already

O b j e c t i o n . — B u t h o w c a n this a g r e e ; w h e n as o u r
m o s t perfect pattern w a s said to be troubled, a n d his
soul w a s sorrowful u n t o d e a t h ; as also, that afflictions
are n o t j o y o u s for t h e p r e s e n t ? - - - ,
p e r f e c t d e g r e e risen, it c a n n o t b e o t h e r w i s e e x p e c t e d
b u t w e m a y b e liable to grief, sorrow, c o m m o t i o n ,
fears a n d jealousies, a n d s o u p a n d d o w n in a n u n c e r
tain m o t i o n , tossed to a n d fro in o u r m i n d s , a n d all
this b e c a u s e l o v e is b u t little, w e a k , a n d l o w o f s t a t u r e ; ,
it is n o t g o t u p i n t o t h e t h r o n e o f d o m i n i o n , s o a s t o
g o v e r n all b y the l a w o f love; y e t s u c h are n o t to b e
hopeless, or o f doubtful m i n d , as d e s p o n d i n g ever to

K n o w , w h o e v e r y o u be, that are m a d e willingly to
v e n t u r e the loss o f all to arrive at this pearl o f charity,
that y o u shall m o s t surely find it; a n d g r e a t rejoicing
there will b e at the finding o f this lost groat. I n d e e d
the house of the soul m u s t b e first t h o r o u g h l y s e a r c h e d ,
a n d the natural self l ove m u s t be swept out. F o r w h a t
is that w h i c h w e m u s t los e, b u t e v e n all rubbish, filth
a n d dross! that so ou r hea rts being emptied a n d c l e a n
sed f r o m all these, the k i n g o f love m a y enter in w i t h
his full train, w h e r e i n w e m a y k n o w , n o t h i n g b u t c o n
c o r d , tranquillity a n d a s p r i n g i n g treasury o f all g o o d

o n e eternal element to bring this plant o f love's k i n g

several rules, characters, a n d holy missions, that will
m a k e o u t w h e r e all t h e s e pure, clear, lively s t o n e s a r e
c o m p a c t e d together, for a ruling, a n d g o v e r n i n g
p r i e s t h o o d in this visible earth:... these are o f t h e
election hereunto, that m a y yet b e hid a m o n g s t the
stuff of Babylon's confusion. A D a w i d m a y be k e e p
i n g of s h e e p ; a n E l i s h a p l o w i n g w i t h a y o k e o f o x e n ;
till a special ordi nation c o m e forth for a n o i n t i n g to a
m o r e high, w o r t h y a n d h o n o u r a b l e e m p l o y , in w h i c h

W h o e v e r feels the t o u c h o f the life coal, that sets t h e
only matter of the soul's eternal essence a burning,
º find w h a t s e p a r a t i o n is m a d e , a n d c a n h e n c e
forth n o m o r e savour the low, vulgar, gross, a n d
earthly c o n c e r n s ; f r o m all w h i c h this priestly f u n c t i o n
doth set free, as called a n d anointed by the m o s t H o l y ,
that is h e a d o f this s e p a r a t e d c o n g r e g a t i o n ; therefore
it is b u t m e e t t h a t t h e b o d y s h o u l d a n s w e r h e r e u n t o ,
that as o u r great h i g h priest is passed into t h e heavens,
being found perfect, separate f r o m sin a n d sinners, so
likewise all a p p e r t a i n i n g to this h e a v e n l y o r d e r will
b e k n o w n in their pure consecration. F o r the spring
o f the spirit will rise f r o m within, to cleanse every
i n s t r u m e n t that m u s t b e u s e d a b o u t the T a b e r n a c l e
service, b e c a u s e G o d will h a v e n o t h i n g to c o m e n e a r

call o f the H o l y G h o s t , for the e m p o w e r i n g a n d fitting
o u t h e r e u n t o ; for else it will b e impossible to c a r r y
this evangelical minist ration in s u c h a n evi l region,

nually heard, as m a k i n g it a l a w ful impositi on u p o n
t h e v e r y illuminated s aints to p u d d l e a b o u t earthly

h a t h b e e n b l o c k e d ; n o o p e n face o f G o d c o u l d t h r o u g h
this m u d d y glass b e seen, as b e i n g the d a r k side o f the
c l o u d , . . keeps f r o m G o d b y m a n y r e m o v e s a n d

O h ! y e h o l y a n d elec t o f G o d , w h e r e e v e r y o u
h a v e b e e n hid , a p p e a r , if y o u have...put o n y o u r
a n o i n t e d sh ield , p r o m o t e , a n d h e l p f o r w a r d this royal
priesthood, w h e r e i n the lively e x p r e s s o f the H o l y
