It tells a story about a boy who lives in the province with his family. We learn in the later part
of the narrative that the family once operated a business in the city, but their source of
income was cut off when a thief broke into their store and stole the merchandise. As a result,
they were compelled to move back to Bohol, where their sole sources of income are a farm
with cornfields, the animals they raise and sell, and the mats his mother makes and sells.
The food they eat was frequently mentioned in the narrative. At the beginning of the story,
we were told that they regularly eat a sweet potato and malunggay soup with the latter being
Dodong's favorite. One day, when he went to the field, he saw his father cutting their
malunggay plant. He was shocked at what he just witnessed and ask his father why he did
such a thing. His father then explained to him that the plant needs to be cut when it gets old
in order to produce a new and fresh one. His father assured him they would find an
alternative and turn it into soup when Dodong countered that they might not have food to
eat. Dinner came by fastly, and the only food served on the table are sweet potatoes.
Dodong lost his appetite at the sight of this and told his father that if he hadn't cut the
malunggay plant, they might have had delectable food served. Regretting what he's done but
cannot do anything about it anymore, his father calmly explained to him that they didn't have
enough time to find an alternative as there were many other chores to do. The following day,
Dodong and his father arrived at their field earlier than usual. He went to tell his father the
good news when he noticed that the malunggay plant was already producing some fine,
fresh leaves, only to discover that his father was unable to walk normally. His father
explained that he was bitten by a snake. The worried Dodong assisted his father in returning
to their home to receive treatment. He was also eager to inform his mother that they could
prepare malunggay soup today. However, on their way home, he noticed that his father was
growing weak. His father told him to focus on his studies while taking care of his mother and
his younger brother. He agreed to his father's request and begged him to get up so they
could get back to their house quickly. Growing weaker with each passing second, his father
finally closed his eyes, leaving Dodong crying at the sight of his dead father.
