Rehearsal Plan for Wednesday, March 29
Samantha Belinski
Concert Choir
Overview
This lesson will focus on reviewing all of the pieces to be performed in the Spring Concert on
March 30th.
Objectives
1. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to perform each piece of music with
correct pitches, rhythms, and interpretation with a success rate of at least 80%.
Materials
1. I Believe in the Sun by Jonathan Adams
2. Omnia Sol by Randall Stroope
3. Blackbird arr. by Mark Brymer
4. O Lux by Audrey Snyder
5. Sign of the Times arr. by Mark Brymer
Instructional Sequence
1. I will begin by leading students in a warm up sequence. I will start by having them repeat
after me as I demonstrate different movements and sounds, and they will have to stay
four beats behind me at all times.
2. Next, I will have students pretend they are holding a balloon out in front of them and will
have them breathe in for four beats to blow up the balloon, hold their breath for four
beats, and breathe out for four beats to deflate the balloon. I will repeat this exercise a
few times, each time increasing the time that students breathe out.
3. I will have students sigh and will then have them sing lip trills on a do mi sol mi do
pattern.
4. I will then have the class sing the same pattern on a rounded “e” vowel.
5. Next, I will have students sing on “ming” and have them point their finger each time they
sing.
6. I will then demonstrate a warmup that uses the phrase “I Believe” to work on legato and
connect it to the piece “I Believe in the Sun”.
7. The choir will then sing “I love to sing, I sigh for spring”, which will incorporate two
different dynamic levels.
8. To end the warmups I will have the choir sing a 9-note scale in the key of Db to get used
to the key of the first piece we will work on. I will then split the choir into groups and
they will sing in rounds.
9. After the warmup exercises, I will have students take out “I Believe in the Sun” and turn
to the last page. I will give them their starting pitch and will tell them to audiate their part
as I keep the beat so everyone stays together. After they audiate I will have them sing
their part out loud, then we will go back to the beginning of the piece and run the whole
song straight through.
10. Next, I will have the choir sing through “Omnia Sol”.
11. After “Omnia Sol”, I will have the choir sing through “Blackbird”. Before I have them
start singing, I will draw their attention to the board where I wrote out the main sections
of the song so they can keep track of where they are as they sing and work on
memorization.
12. Following “Blackbird”, I will have the class sing through “O Lux”. After the run through
I will focus on fixing any pitch/timing issues on the last page since that was a trouble spot
in the last rehearsal.
13. To end class, I will have the choir sing through “Sign of the Times”.
Assessment
Formative: I will be assessing throughout each run-through to see if students are accurately
performing their parts and to listen for any sections that still need to be reviewed.
Summative: The run-throughs of each piece will act as a summative assessment to see if each
piece is performance-ready and to see if there’s anything I need to address at the dress rehearsal.
