The document discusses Vice President and Education Secretary Sarah Duterte's new education agenda called MATATAG: Bansang Makabata, Batang Makabansa. The agenda aims to resolve issues in the Philippine education system. It has four components: making the curriculum relevant, accelerating delivery of education facilities and services, promoting learner well-being, and supporting teachers. The agenda also plans to build resilient schools, provide equitable access to education, and optimize digital learning. However, the document notes that while the agenda is a good plan, its realistic implementation needs to be improved to truly address access, equity, equality, resiliency, and well-being in the education system.

The problem facing by the Department of Education (DepEd) highlighted

by our new Vice President and Education Secretary Sarah Duterte in her agenda

MATATAG: Bansang Makabata, Batang Makabansa. In her statement she explicitly state

that MATATAG will bring direction in resolving issues and challenges to the

Educational system in the Philippines.

According to her, MATATAG represent by four components: (1) Make

curriculum relevant to produce competent and job-ready, active, and responsible citizens;

(2) Take steps to accelerate delivery of basic education facilities and services; (3) Take

good care of learners by promoting learner well-being, inclusive education, and a positive

learning environment. and (4) Give support to teachers to teach better.

Plans to build more resilient schools and classrooms is more needed today.

Physical facilities with laboratory equipment for better opportunity to learn. Through

applicable policy assurances and community literacy program interventions, the Literacy

Coordinating Council collaborates with lawmakers and local government entities to

eradicate illiteracy at the city, municipal, and barangay levels. Pursue steps to provide

schooling to many more children and youth in disadvantaged settings, regardless of

gender, ability, psycho-emotional and physical conditions, cultural and religious identity,

or socioeconomic standing. This is in terms of teaching practices that are innovative,

responsive, and inclusive in accordance with the Philippine Professional Standards for

Teachers (PPST). And lastly, To optimize the benefits of digital learning, teachers and

students should train to use technology in remote learning.

Over all, the MATATAG is good plan for Educational system, the problem is

how realistic it is. We need to improve access, equity, equality, resiliency, and well-being

with the help of national effort from all areas of society.

BATANG MAKABANSA, BANSANG MAKABATA

By: Rica B. Velasco

Sarah Duterte, Vice President and Education Secretary, launched MATATAG:

Bansang Makabata, Batang Makabansa. In her remarks, she specifically states that

MATATAG will provide direction in resolving concerns and challenges in the Philippine

educational system. But the thing is what is the meaning of “Batang Makabansa,

Bansang Makabata”?

We have different perception for “Batang Makabansa, Bansang Makabata”.

Batang Makabansan, emphasize the love of Filipino child to our country. In expansion to

the idea, the new agenda might develop cultural based education, simply a method to

teaching and learning that is founded on the values, norms, beliefs, and practices that

constitute the foundation of any culture. Students from varied backgrounds and cultures

are frequently marginalized in school because they are exposed to a curriculum with a

prevailing cultural bias. It does not cater to the culture in which they are familiar and

have a stake. This is why it is critical to develop a curriculum that encompasses various

points of view.

For Bansang Makabata, marginalize the need of the children in school. The

education system is more on student centered, the needs of the learners will more

prioritize. Students should be involved in planning, execution, and evaluation. Involving

the learners in these decisions will put more work on them, which might be a positive

thing.

Overall, Batang Makabansa, Bansang Makabata simply means, that develop

child’s love for country, and prioritize the child’s need for the better the better future.
