2.5.2.1 General
‘Any device for protection against earth-leakage current shall be capable
Of interrupting the part of the circuit protected by the device when an
‘earth-leakage current is flowing above a predetermined value.
Devices shall be residual current devices (RCDs) complying with
‘AS 3190, ASINZS 3175 or ASINZS 6109.1.
The current rating of an RCD shall be not less than the greater of the
following:
(a) The maximum demand of the portion of the electrical installation
being protected by the device.
(b) The highost current rating of any overload protective device on the
Portion of the electrical installation being protected.
NOTES:
1 To avold unwanted tripping due to leakage currents and transient
disturbances, care should be taken to ensure that tho sum of the leakage
currents of electrical equipment on the load side of an RCD is less than 1/3 of
Its rated residual curent.
2 To avoid excessive leakage current causing unwanted tripping where socket:
cutlets are protected by one RCD having a rated residual current not greater
than 30.mA, consideration should be given to the number of socketoutlets
protected and the nature of electrical equipmant likoly to bo connected to the
Socket-outets.
2.5.2.2 Type of RCD for New Zealand
For New Zealand, in addition to complying with Clause 2.5.2.1, RCDs
shall be of a type where tripping is ensured for residual alternating
current and residual pulsating direct current.
NOTE: RCDs providing operation under a.c. and pulsating d.c. condlions are
Classlied a8 Type A in ASINZS 3178 and ASINZS 6109.1.Page 84 Clause 2.5.3.1

2.8.3.1 Domestic electrical installations
CDs with a maximum rated residual current of 30 mA shall be installed
for the protection of the following final subcircuits in domestic
electrical installations:
(@) Socket-outlets.
(b) Lighting.
This requirement need not apply to a socket-outlet, or a connecting device
installed in accordance with Clause 4.11 (c), for the connection of fixed or
stationary electric cooking appliances, such as ranges, ovens or hotplates.

A circuit for a fixed or stationary cooking appliance shall be provided
with a functional switch, operating in all active conductors, mounted
near the appliance in a visible accessible position.
NOTE: The switch should be mounted within 2 m of the cooking aspliance, but
ot on the cooking appliance, in such a position that the user doee not have to
reach across the cooking appliance,
A single switch is permissible for the control of associated cooking
eppliances, such as a spli-level range combination, in the same room.
4.3.11.2 Connection by socket-outlet
In New Zealand, a cooking appliance shall be connected to the electrical
installation wiring by a socket-outlet, that has a suitable current rating, in
accordance with Clause 4.11 (b).
This requirement need not apply to @ fixed cooking appliance.
