Procedures (step by step) Children will be able to identify different kinds of pets and how to take care of them from the text.

The teacher will read aloud the book “The little book of Pets” by Zack Bush.

The teacher will ask students open-ended questions about the pets from the book. What kind of
pets did you see in the story? How should we care for our pets? How many times should we feed
our pets? Do you have a pet? What kind of pet do you have? What is the name of your pet? After
the children have shared with the class their pet’s name, the teacher will invite them to draw a
picture of their pets. In case, some child does not have a pet, he or she can draw a favorite pet
that she would like to have in the future.
I try: the teacher will show children how to draw a dog on the board and she will write down its
name. She will present his pet by saying “This is my dog, its name is Pete”.
We try: Students will draw their pets on white sheets and they will color them or they can use
other art supplies.
Independent Practice: Students will work in small groups. Each student will draw their own pet.
They can color it, glue ripped colored paper, or paint with watercolors. The teacher will assist
them when they are drawing in case they are not sure what to draw. While students are drawing,
the teacher will ask them questions: What is your pet? How do you care for your pet? Do you
feed your pet? What kind of food does your pet eat? Where does your pet sleep? Do you take
your pet for a walk daily? The teacher can also ask students about the special traits of their pets.
Is your pet big or small? Does your pet have large ears? Is your pet fluffy? Does your pet have a
tail? Finally, students will try to write their pet’s name with the teacher's help.
Students will introduce their friends to their drawings about their pets during circle time. They
will start saying “This is my cat, dog, rabbit, bird, etc, and its name is…”. Students can also share
some special traits of their pets or how they care for them.

Follow up/Extension activities How can I provide an opportunity to remediate, reinforce, or expand on students’ learning today in
class?

The teacher will take the students for a walk around the neighborhood so that they can identify
some pets. The students will be able to ask the pet owners how they take care of their pets. Later
during circle time, they will share about the pets they saw and what activities the owners said
they do to take care of their pets.
Family Engagement Activities
How can I support families in extending the learning in their home environment?

The teacher will send parents a white sheet where parents can glue some pictures of their pets and
the whole family. The teacher will encourage parents to ask questions to their children about how
they take care of their pets to reinforce the lesson. Students will be able to bring their collage
pictures and show them to the class.
