Fracture Mechanics Report Guide

This document provides instructions for a written report assignment in the course MSF780 Fracture Mechanics. The report should be 8-10 pages and contain three parts: Part A is a 5-6 page summary of a journal article presented by the student, intended for colleagues. It should discuss the topic and audience, summarize key methodology, results and conclusions in the student's own words, and reflect on areas for further study. Part B responds thoughtfully to questions from classmates about the student's presentation. Part C reflects on important concepts learned from other students' presentations and how two key ideas from the course could be applied in the future. Instructions for Written Report

Assigned: 15 December 2020 Due: 10 January 2021

Your report will be in three parts.

Part A: Summary of Journal Article

You have already made a presentation on a journal article. You should now write a 5 - 6 page
summary of this paper. Your audience for this report is your colleagues or peers. The nature of
this report is therefore a technical report, sharing your learning with other people in the same
technical environment as you.

Your report should contain the following:

(Note, these are not chapter headings, but should help to guide your thinking as you structure
the paper. They will not take up equal space in the finished paper.)

• Discussion of the audience for which this report is intended.

• Explanation of the specific topic which the paper covers, and how this links to a broad
topic within fracture mechanics.

– Why is this topic relevant / significant (to me, my company, the broader field)?
– What are the questions which are being asked in this topic?

• Summary, including key methodology, results and conclusions from the paper

– Try to write the summary of the paper in your own words, even if they don’t sound
as polished as the original article. Your report will be more useful as feedback to
colleagues if you have interpreted the results and put them into context. You will
also demonstrate your own understanding of the ideas.
– If it is possible for you to demonstrate understanding of the results by, e.g., imple-
menting an algorithm in Python to understand how it works, this would also be
helpful.

• Conclusions and reflections

– Areas for further study (for me, in the broader field)

1
– Ideas which can be implemented in my company
– Usefulness of fracture mechanics methodologies in my research / my company

Part B: Response to questions from classmates on your presentation

Your classmates have posed questions to you based on your presentation. You should respond
to each question thoughtfully, and try to answer in as much detail as possible.

Part C: Reflection on learning

Please reflect on your learning from this course, and address the following:

• Identify at least two important ideas or concepts that you learned from the presentations
by other members of the class. For each of these, discuss what you learned, why it is
interesting or relevant to you.

• Choose two key ideas that you have learned from this course, MSF 780. For each of these,
explain why you think that this idea is interesting or relevant to you, and discuss how
you will be able to apply it in the future.
