Question 6: What Happens While We Sleep
Part 3: Open Response Questions
1. Speak About the Photo: Sample answer This photo shows a woman painting a fountain on a large canvas
in what looks like a beautiful city park. The season must either be late autumn or winter as the trees have no
leaves and the painter is wearing a fleece jacket. The wide fountain consists of a number of ornamental
statues set around the pool, and although the water does not shoot up so high, there are at least two separate
spouts. Something the painter seems to be ignoring is the impressive staircase to the left that could be
considered a work of art itself. The artist has set her wooden easel atop the cobblestone plaza and is putting
the finishing touches on her work. Below her wide landscape canvas sits the palette where she mixes the
various colors to match this natural urban setting.
2. Read, Then Speak: Sample answer I’d like to describe a time I gave a friend of mine a reality check about
being rich. I have a friend who thinks that money will buy him happiness. I met this friend about twenty years
ago and ever since I first met him he’s always tried so hard to make money and he never stops talking about it.
I have always noticed he has never been very successful at this so one day I asked him if he liked what he was
doing every day to, which he said no. I said back to him, think about this carefully. You’re spending all day,
every day, doing something you don’t like in order to try to make money which will probably not bring you
much happiness at all in the long term. My friend’s reaction was to try to justify making a lot of money by
saying it buys you complete freedom which I agreed was true. Then I said to him, money can’t buy you love or
friends or family, it also can’t make people like you and it certainly won’t buy you peace of mind. I also said
accumulating expensive things won’t make you happy either as they will only bring you temporary satisfaction.
In fact, if you have a lot of money you will probably only become greedier and want more when you already
have more than enough. In the end, having a lot of money will bring you some stress relief but it will not solve
all your problems in life.

Question: Describe a skill that you can teach to others. When did you learn it? How can you teach it?
Sample Answer: I’d like to describe how I can teach people how to swim. I learned this skill in elementary
school where it was compulsory for all the students in my school from grades four and upwards to be able to
swim one hundred meters. Regarding how I would teach this, off the top of my head, I would start by getting
them to work on their kicking action. To do this I would tell them to place the upper part of their body onto a
paddleboard and get them to try to propel themselves forward using the torpedo kick which I would teach
them. While they are doing this, I would make sure they are moving forward in the water as straight as
possible. Once I could see their kicking action and their arm strokes were good, I would then take the
paddleboards away from them to see if they could swim one length of the pool using the correct kicking action
and arm stroke. I would then tell them to do one length of the pool by using the correct kicking action and arm
strokes. I think everybody should learn how to swim, mainly because learning how to swim

Question: Do you think that technology has made us more social. Why or why not?
Sample Answer: Yes, overall I think that modern technology such as smartphones has made us more social.
The invention of online social media sites, such as Twitter and Facebook, has dramatically reduced the need to
have face-to-face interactions, and this has been very helpful especially since the Coronavirus pandemic hit
the world. Through these social apps, people can easily keep in touch and communicate with whoever they
want, close friends or total strangers, from anywhere in the world. Actually, I have experienced this because
since last year I have been learning from a Japanese teacher who lives in Tokyo on webcam from my home in
Germany. It's amazing that I have this opportunity thanks to modern technology. Another reason why I think
technology has made us more social is that people can share any type of news, information, and photos with
their loved ones in an instant keeping a feeling of closeness. To wrap up, I firmly believe technology has made
everyone in this world more social.
5. Read, Then Write: Sample answer Every person in the world is unique. The amount we sleep and the time
we sleep and wake up is one of the main differences. For some people, it comes naturally to wake early, while
others prefer to stay up late at night. Personally, I’ve always been a night owl. I struggled with tiredness every
morning when I was at school. But as an adult, I decided to get a job that started in the afternoon. This has
allowed me to stay up late at night and wake up at my natural time, which is around 11 in the morning. This
schedule has made a big difference to my happiness.

1. Speaking Sample: Sample answer Yes, I love reading because it is probably one of the most beneficial
activities I do. The first reason why reading I enjoy reading is because it increases my knowledge. It fills my
mind with new facts, new information, and new ideas that make me better at conversations as I always have
something interesting to talk about. on top of that, it is a well-known fact that reading frequently improves
your vocabulary. The more you read the more words you will be exposed to, which will improve your ability to
articulate your thoughts more effectively. Personally, I enjoy reading fantasy books like Harry Potter because
they're enjoyable to read and I can easily bond with the characters. I think reading consistently has benefited
my life in so many different ways.

work is done well and employees know what they need to do. In my opinion, the most important quality of a
