Question 6: Inspiration From My Father

Part 3: Open Response Questions

1. Speak About the Photo: Sample answer This is an image of someone at a rock concert filming the band
with his or her smartphone. On the phone screen, you can see the lead singer of the band singing and playing
his guitar with several bright stage lights shining above him. The background of the photo is quite blurry, but
you can just about see all the equipment and musical instruments behind the vocalist. Also, there seems to be
another guitarist to the singer's right. It's hard to say for sure, but if I had to guess, I'd bet that this is a heavy
rock concert that is taking place in a small concert hall or even in a pub or a bar.

2. Read, Then Speak: Sample answer There is one environmental problem that I know a lot about. It’s the
polluting of rivers and the sea in my country. I believe it’s mainly caused by the irresponsible disposal of waste
by large factories. This problem, the pollution, has been brought on by many years of abuse and a lack of
respect. For a long time, many factory owners simply just didn’t care about the damage they were causing to
my country. The toxic waste in the rivers gave off a very strong and disgusting smell. We even were advised by
our local government not to swim in the rivers or the sea as it could lead to skin issues or other kinds of health
problems. Moving on to the next question, yes, there have been steps to solve this issue. About 8 or 9 years
ago, the government started to take action and passed laws that made it illegal for factory owners to dump
large amounts of waste into the rivers and ocean. They started to give out heavy fines to any business that did
this. Also, the police were given more power to charge people if they were seen littering on the streets or
dumping their trash in the river or on the beach. To be honest, this problem still exists in my country today,
but, overall, it has certainly gotten a lot better.

Question: Talk about a gift that you gave someone recently. How did it make you feel?
Sample Answer: I recently gave my younger brother a book as a graduation gift. The book is titled “How to
Own the World”, and it’s on the topic of personal finance and investing. The reason I gave this to my younger
brother is because it’s a book that I wish I had read earlier in my life. The book simply guides you on the best
and safest ways to invest your money, and one of the key points is to start investing as early as possible;
ideally when you’re in your early twenties. That’s why I gifted this book to my younger brother as he is only
twenty-one years old and just about to start his first job. Moving on to the next question. To be honest, I felt
quite proud to be able to share this book with my brother because I honestly think it will improve his life,
financially speaking, which of course is really important. And I also felt a little bit jealous. He’s about 10 years
younger than I am, and I wish I could go back in time and read this book and start investing my money
sensibly at twenty-one years old. So yeah that’s a gift that I have given to someone recently.

Question: Describe a live sports match that you have watched. Why did you watch it live?
Sample Answer: I’d like to describe a live sports competition I watched a few years ago. A few years ago, I
watched a live Rugby game that I really enjoyed. The event was held in Japan where I lived for a number of
years, and I’m a mad rugby fan so I was especially interested in this game. I went to this game with a friend
who was also a keen rugby fan and we had been looking forward to this game very much in the week before
kickoff. We knew the bar would be full so we made sure we got there several hours early so we could get a
good seat that had a good view of the game. The game was streamed live on TV in a bar in my local area. We
were lucky as we were able to get a good seat in front of the biggest TV screen in the bar. The bar was bursting
at the seams and there were people there from many countries, especially people from the UK and Australia.
The noise at times was deafening.

5. Read, Then Write: Sample answer Exercise and good nutrition are hugely important to maintain good
health. But for me, sports are probably my favorite way to stay healthy, as I really enjoy competition. Although
I enjoy badminton and swimming, my favorite sport to play is football. I have played football since I was at
school, almost every day. I made many friends playing football and there’s no better feeling than scoring a
goal. It’s a great form of aerobic exercise and helps you practice sprinting and also long-distance running. All in
all, playing football is a healthy activity that I enjoy.

Part 4: Writing & Speaking Sample

1. Speaking Sample: Sample answer A really important decision I’ve made recently is to study abroad, which
is the reason I’m here now. No one from my family has ever had the chance to study abroad before. My
parents were actually hoping I’d start working for our family textile business as soon as I graduate. I think it’s
too soon to join the family business though. I really want to study marketing – especially fashion marketing –
and English so I can sell our company products to buyers all over the world. If I study fashion marketing in the
UK, I can learn how to do business in the fashion industry, which is of course very competitive and fast-
moving. As for whether it was the right decision, I’m pretty confident it was and I can’t change my mind now
anyway because I borrowed money from my parents to pay for my tuition. I’m going to do my best to finish
my course and I will go back to my country with new ideas that will help expand our business. All I need now is
to get a good English score. So, anyway, that’s an important decision in my life.

2. Writing Sample: Sample answer Once, I was walking through the main shopping street in my city when I
noticed a person who needed help. It was a young man who seemed to have had too much alcohol and was in
a great deal of pain. He was alone and felt very cold since we must have been outside for quite a while. I
quickly ran over and helped him call his family for help. His family came to pick him up after a short time, and I
never saw him again.
