8.1 Yogas formed by the Nodes
     The term ‘Yoga’ used in astrology indicates a combination of
grahas Yoga is a combination of grahas m signs or houses. A Yoga
will either add strength to the horoscope or it will reduce the
strength of the horoscope. A Yoga will be formed by either one graha
or by more than one graha. According to the results, the Yogas can
be divided into two groups and they are-
      1) subhayoga s and
      2) Asubhayogas
subhayogas are those which bring good fortune, success, wealth, wife,
children, peace, happiness, kingly powers, honours etc. Asubhayogas
are those which bring misfortune, troubles, problems, failures,
loss, worries, death etc. In astrology, eight kinds of death are
accepted.

Sorrows, Distress, Fear, Insult, Diseases, Grief, Death and Disgrace
are the eight kinds of death.
      Yogas are very important m judging overall nature of a
horoscope. And, we must measure the strength of the Yogas also
The strength of a Yoga depends upon the nature of the graha The
grahas are classified mto three groups, benefic malefic and neutral.
Jupiter, Venus, strong moon and well associated Mereuiy are the
natural benefic grahas, whereas malefic grahas are Sun, Mars,
Saturn, Rahu and Ketu We must also consider the signs, houses,
aspects of the grahas, lords of the houses and signs also in the
judging the strength of the Yoga. If any graha m a horoscope is the
lord of an angular house and a triangular house then that graha, it
may be benefic or malefic, is a Yogakaraka for that horoscope.
Usually the lords of ascendant, fifth house and ninth house, will be
beneficial to the horoscope. The lords of second, third, sixth,
seventh, eighth and twelfth houses will bad to the horoscope. Lords
of fourth, tenth and eleventh houses will be neutral to the
horoscope. All these pomts must be kept m mind m judgmg the
strength of a Yoga.
      Prof. B. V. Raman, in his book, “Three Hundred Important
Combinations” has given a very good method for judging the
strength of a Yoga. “A planet is if benefic, will get one positive unit

of strength. If malefic, assign a negative unit of strength. Ascertain
if two planets causing a yoga are m association with or aspected by
other benefic and malefic aspect. Aspects !4, Vi and % also be taken
into account or association and a negative unit for the Association
and aspect of a malefic. See also if the Yogakarakas are in
exaltation or debilitation, m friendly or mimical houses and assign
positive and negative units for the same”. This system of B. V.
Raman is also useful in judgmg the strength.
     Just like other grahas, the nodes too cause some Yogas,
which are either good one or bad. Let us know the various Yogas
formed by the Rahu - Ketu. Firstly, we will know the subhayogas
formed by Rahu - Ketu.
8.1.1 subhayogas formed by Rahu - Ketu.
     The subhayogas formed by Rahu - Ketu can be classified into two
groups and they are l)Benefic Yogas and        2)Benefic Yogas    give
prosperity and wealth. Rajayogas bestow kingly powers or will make
the native to hold high positions. Let us know these Yogas m detail.
Firstly, we will know the beneficial combinations.
8.1.1.1 Mahadhanika yoga

When Rahu, Venus, Mars and Saturn are m Virgo, the native will
become very rich. This Yoga is also mentioned in Jatakatattvam
                                  II In this Yoga, the ascendant is
mentioned. So, this Yoga will happen, when all the grahas are in
Virgo. Rahu is considered to be auspicious m Virgo. Some scholars
have considered Virgo as the own house of Rahu. I have already
stated in an earlier chapter that, Rahu' is favorable m dual signs. So,
Rahu in Virgo will give favorable results. For Venus, Virgo is the sign
of debilitation, so naturally it will give bad results. But as it is with
Rahu who is a beneflc m Virgo the bad effects of Venus will be
nullified. According to me, this Yoga will be very beneficial to almost
all ascendants. But Taurus ascendants will benefit from this Yoga
the most Because if the ascendant is Taurus then all those grahas
will be in a trme house. Further, Mars is the owner of a angular
house, Venus will be the owner of the ascendant, Saturn will be the
owner of the a angular house and a triangular house, and when
Rahu is with such a combmation, definitely it will do good to the
native. Cancer, Leo, Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants will also
benefit from this Yoga just like Taurus ascendants. Because in all
these ascendants also, one of the graha will have the lordship of an
angular house and a triangular house. When other signs are
ascendants, they will benefit but not as these ascendants.

      The native will become nch when the lord of the fifth house is
m the fifth house and that graha is joined by Rahu or Ketu with the
lord of eleventh house. Fifth and eleventh house mdicate sudden
gams. The nodes also indicate sudden gams. So, this combination
will always make the native nch I feel that the relationship of the
fifth and eleventh lords with Rahu or Ketu will always results m
sudden gams. Especially these people will make money m
gambling, lottery etc.
8.1.1.2 Kuladipaka yoga

If the native is born m leo ascendant and the Mars is m leo
ascendant, Moon is m fifth house and Rahu is m the twelfth house,
then the native will become Kuladipaka Native will bnng good name
to his family. The native bom m Leo ascendant will be very proud,
authontative ambitions, honorable and passionate.         He is a
commander physically and mentally He is a good organizer and
exercises authority. For Leo ascendant Mars is a Yogakaraka, as it
owns an angular house and a triangular house. And, Mars is m
lagna, which will make native courageous, authontative and it
develops in the native leadership qualities. Moon is in fifth house.

Fifth house indicates mind and intelligence and Moon also
indicates the same factor. So, the native will be with good mind and
intelligence. Rahu is m 12th house, Cancer sign Rahu gives bad
results in twelfth house But, as he is in Cancer, which is a good
sign for Rahu, the native will benefit from the Rahu. Such a
combination will make the native very famous and nch and he will
bring good name to his family
8.1.1.3 Kulapalaka yoga

house and Sun m ninth house, the native will be Kulapalaka Native
will be a responsible person and will look after his family nicely.
This Yoga creates responsibility m the native.

For a person bom in Capncom, Saturn and Mercury m the ninth
house and Rahu m the twelfth house with its lord Jupiter, will bring
good fortune. Usually, Rahu will influence the native according to
the position of his dispositor. In this combination Rahu is in twelfth

house, with its lord Jupiter. So, Rahu is in a powerful position. So
definitely Rahu will bring good fortune. For a person bom in
Aquarius sign7 with Venus and Rahu m it and Sun in the tenth
house will bring good fortune. According to astrological principles,
Sun is powerful in tenth house as he has digbala in tenth house. So,
Sun wiU definitely do good. Rahu gives good results in Aquarius
which I have stated earlier and Rahu is with Venus, a Yogakaraka for
Aquarius, as Venus owns an angular house and a triangular
house, So, Rahu is in ascendant with a Yogakaraka graha which will
increase the power of Rahu also. So, definitely, this combination will
bring good fortune to the native.
      Kalidasa, m his book uttarakalamrta8    says that, Rahu is a
Yogakaraka when Rahu is m 4th , 7th, 9th, 10th and eleventh houses
and Ketu is m a Yogakaraka m third house from the ascendant I
personally feel that both Rahu and Ketu bring good fortune in third
and eleventh house. All the malefic grahas give good results m
upacaya houses. But, in other houses, i,e 4th, 7th, 9th and 10th the
nodes will become Yogakaraka only when they have relationship with
a Yogakaraka graha or when the lords of those houses are well
placed.

When Saturn, Mars and Rahu are together and Jupiter is aspected
by Mercury and Venus, the native will become a master of all arts
and sciences, though the native is of a low caste or a poor family.
Mercury, Jupiter and Venus indicate education, intelligence, skill
etc. When Jupiter is aspected by Mercury and Venus, it creates two
yogas and they are atimanusa yoga and ajnaraja yoga . Both these
yogas create great skills in the native. Saturn, Mars and Rahu
mdicate natives interest occult science and super natural science
Native will be research oriented also. Interested m finding some
hidden secrets when Mars, Saturn and Rahu are together. So, all
these combination shows the sign of a great scholar proficient m
many fields.
8.1.1.5 Budhayoga

Budha yoga will be formed when Jupiter is in ascendant and Moon is
m an angular house from the Jupiter, Rahu is m second house from
the Moon and Sun and Mars are in the third house from Rahu
When this yoga is formed the native will become equivalent to the
king, will be famous, intelligent proficient m many arts and
wealthy In this yoga Jupiter is in ascendant, which will increase
the power of the ascendant. And, when Moon is m a square house
from the Jupiter, it will create the gajakesari yoga This yoga itself
gives positions and wealth. And, m this yoga, Rahu is m the second
house from Moon and sun, Mars is m third house from Rahu.
     According to Bhojaraja Dwivedi11, the nodes bring sudden
gams. He says that when the lord of the fifth house is well placed
and the lord of the eleventh house is in fifth house with either Rahu
or Ketu will bring unexpected wealth and prosperity to the native
He calls this combination as Aniriksita dhanalabha yoga He also adds
that usually the native will make wealth from lottery, shares or
gambling in this combmation. Fifth house is the house of sudden
gams and the nodes also mdicate sudden gain and the lord of
eleventh house, i,e the house of profit is in fifth house. So, such a
combination will always bring sudden gains. This combination is
also mentioned by Mr. J.N. Bhasin12 also.

      According to Dwivedi, when Jupiter is m ascedant and Moon
m an angular house, Rahu is m the second house from Moon and
Sun and Mars are m the 3rd house from Moon, the native will
become    a   great   scientist   This   combmation   is   called   as
“ucchavaijnamka yoga 13
      When the second house is occupied by three grahas among
Sun, Mercury, Rahu and Saturn or the lord of second house is
influenced by any three grahas among these, then the native will be
a very successful doctor.14 Sun, Saturn and Rahu mdicate medical
profession and second house and lord of the second house indicate
education, so the influence of     these grahas make the native a
successful medical practitioner. J. N Bhasm15 also has mentioned
about this combmation I personally feel that their conclusion is
correct
According to Mr. L. R. Chawdhan16 when Rahu is in sixth house
with Jupiter in an angular house will create astalaksmi yoga . Rahu m
the 6th house may give diseases or powerful enemies to be
conquered but gives peaceful prosperity. The best formation of this
yoga would be when Rahu* is in sixth house aspected by Jupiter
from the tenth house.

When Mercury is m ascedant, Moon is in fourth house, Jupiter m
the ninth house and Rahu in the eleventh house, the native will
acquire high positions. This verse is indicating the combination to
acquire high position. This position may be the head of a
institution or an industry or a minister or a distnct head etc. This
combination indicates all the chances of acquiring high position
and wealth. In this combination, Mercury is m ascedant which will
mcrease the strength of the ascendant. Moon is in fourth house,
which is a auspicious for the native. Jupiter is m ninth house m a
time, which is most auspicious. When Jupiter is m ninth house, it
will be aspecting the ascedant and fifth house from its Trikona drstl
Jupiter has Trikona drstl Jupiter aspects the 5th and ninth house
from where it exists in a chart. So, Jupiter is aspecting the
ascedant and Mercury which will mcrease the power of ascedant

is considered as the most auspicious. So, m this combination, the
aseedent, fourth house, ninth house and eleventh house are very
powerful giving the most auspicious results. Such a combmation
will make the native wealthy and also to hold high positions. I
personally feel that, this yoga is most auspicious to all the
ascedants except Taurus. Because, Jupiter is not beneficial to
Taurus ascedant, as he owns eighth and eleventh houses, and for
Taurus ascedant, Jupiter m the ninth house means Jupiter is m
Capricorn, the sign of debilitation Unless his debilitation is
supported, this yoga will be of medium effect for Taurus ascedant

When Jupiter is m second house, Venus is m eighth house and
Rahu is m eleventh house, the native will become a king. In this
combination, Jupiter is in second house and Venus is in eighth
house According to astrological rules, all the grahas have seventh
house aspect. So, both these grahas i.e Jupiter and Venus are
aspectmg each other, which creates a combmation called atimanusa
yoga. This yoga will bring leadership and some super natural
qualities in the native. This combination will merease the longevity

house, the house of longevity will nullify all the evils adversely
effecting natives longevity And in this combination, Rahu is m
eleventh house, the most desirable house for Rahu. So, such a

hold high positions.

as explained above. But, only Rahu is m the ninth house Nmth
house indicates bhagya i.e wealth I have already explained m an

sudden gains. These gams may be m the form of wealth, property
or positions. Rahu’s strength is supported by the atimanusa yoga
created by Jupiter and Venus.

When Rahu is in Gemini and Mars is in Leo, the native will become
a promment person in a government. This verse says the native will

become a king or a leader of the warriors. So, we interpret this
verse into modem times, the native will become a minister or he
will hold high position m the military or m any office. Rahu m
Gemini is always auspicious, as it is a dual sign, where the nodes
give positive influences. Mars is an mdicator of courage and
leadership, which are essential to hold a high position. The sign Leo
also indicates lion, which is the king of the jungle. So, when Mars
m Leo the native will always have leadership qualities The native
will be courageous and commanding. So, such a combination will
make the native a king or to hold high positions According to me,
this combmation gives most auspicious results to a native bom m
Leo ascendant. Because, for Leo ascedant, Mars is a Yogakaraka as
he owns an angle and a triangular house and Rahu will be m
Gemini, the eleventh house, the most desirable house and sign

not sure. Scholars have different views regarding this matter. I
personally feel that Rahu has no such classification of sign.

Moon m Taurus, Rahu and Venus m Gemini, Jupiter in Cancer,

bom m Anes ascedant with the deeply exalted Sun. Aries is the
exaltation sign of Sun and he is m his deep exaltation at the 10th
degree of Anes. Moon is m Taurus, which is the exaltation sign of

When Sun and Mercuiy are m tenth house from the ascedant and
Rahu and Mars are in sixth house the native will become a king. In
this combination, Sun and Mercuiy are in tenth house and when
they are located together m a house, that will create a powerful
mpunayoga, or budhaditya yoga This yoga will make the native a good
scholar and a thinker. Rahu and Mars are m sixth house, which is
a upacaya house. Both Rahu and Mars are considered as malefic and
malefic give auspicious results in upacaya house. So, both Rahu and
Mars are beneficial. Sun in the tenth house is considered to have
digbala So, all these grahas are powerfully placed and it will create
leadership qualities in the native and the native may become a
king.

third house, the native will become a King. This verse does not
mention which will be the ascedant, Venus is m Pisces, which is
the sign of it exaltation. I think the above combmation is best
suited to Aries ascendant. Because, then Venus, Sun and Moon
will be in their sign of exaltation. Rahu will be m third house 1 e
Gemini, which also a auspicious sign for Rahu So, I feel that this
combination will bring best results to the natives of Anes ascedant.
Though Mercury is debilitated for Aries ascendant, it will be
powerful as it is with the exalted Venus.

rajasahacari yoga . In this combmation, the native will not become a

house from Sun and Moon, (bhavat bhavacintanam). Fourth house

8.1.3 Asubhavoqas
We have seen the beneficial yogas formed by the Nodes. Let us
study the malefic combinations of the nodes. Malefic combinations
bring failure, ill repute, accidents, and sometimes death also. These
yogas   are formed when the nodes are badly placed or under the
influence of malefic grahas. Let us see the malefic combinations
formed by the Nodes.
8.1.3.1 Kutumbanasaka yoga

        When Rahu, Sun and Saturn are m fourth house and Moon,
Mercury, Mars and Venus are m sixth house, the native will
destroy his own house. This is called as Kutumbanasaka yoga. Fourth
house mdicates house, friends, relatives, comforts, heart etc. When
a malefic graha occupies this house all these the matters will have
its malefic influence. In this combination, the fourth house is

occupied by the malefic Sun, Rahu and Saturn. All these grahas
adversely effect the comforts and happmess of the native. It will
create heart diseases also, as forth house indicates heart also
These malefic grahas make the native rude, cruel, adamant m
nature and unadjustable. This benefic grahas like Venus, Mercury,
Moon are m sixth house which is pleasant house for benefic
grahas The malefic grahas m the fourth house will make the native
a person with impure heart and cruel mtensions, which will
naturally lead to the destructions of his own house and family. The
destruction of house means problem with his own people or
destruction of family properties etc.
8.1.3.2 Hratkapatva yoga

m fourth house, the native will be a man of deceitful heart This is
also called as Hratkapatya yoga   The forth house indicates heart. So, if
Saturn or Mars or Rahu is m that house, the native’s heart wall be
impure. Native wall have qualities like dishonesty, cheating and
deceitfulness.

influence of malefic grahas like Sun, Saturn and Rahu, the native
will be a big fool. These malefic grahas will adversely effect the fifth
lord.
8.1.3.4 Kalahapriva yoga

      When Malefic influenced Moon is with Rahu in fifth, eight or
twelfth house, the native will be insane and quarrelsome. Moon,
who is the signifier of mind is under malefic influence and is also
accompanied by Rahu. Such a combination will always adversely
effect the mind of the native, which will make him sometimes
insane. When this combmation is in undesirable houses like fifth,
eighth or twelfth, the results will be worst Native will be out of
mind and will find fault in everybody and will be quarrelsome.
8.1.3.5 Anucita Karma Yoga (Guru Candala yoga)

      If Jupiter is with Rahu or Ketu and has the aspect of malefic
grahas then the native will mvolve m wicked deeds. The native will
be wicked and will have dealing with wrong people and will involve
m illegal activities. In this combination, Jupiter is with one of the
nodes. Jupiter mdicates good customs, practices and regulations.
When one of the Nodes is with Jupiter, all these matters will be
influenced by the nodes. And, m this combination, Jupiter is
having the malefic aspect also and it will also adversely effect the

qualities of Jupiter. So, in this combination, the positive influences
of Jupiter will be nullified and the native will show negative nature
like   wickedness,     deceitful,    against    religion     and   customs,
involvement m wicked deeds etc.
       The above combination is mentioned by many scholars. But
they have given different names like candala yoga, guru candala yoga
etc.

       The conjunction of Jupiter with one of the nodes is supposed
to produce wicked tendencies even when the native is bom in the
most pious and godly of families. But, I think, this conjunction will
do bad only wrhen it is badly placed, otherwise it is the best

       This combination is not same as the above.

Vaidyanatha calls this combination as Kuladhvamsaka yoga Under the
influence of this yoga,       the native will mvolve m anti-soeial

8.1.3.7 Pataki yoga

aspected by malefic conjucted Jupiter, the native will become a
criminal. Usually, the conjunction of moon with the malefic graha
is considered very bad. Because, Moon controls the mind of native
and when Moon is influenced by the melifies, the native will be evil
minded       In this combination, Moon is with Rahu, which creates
cruel mtensions m the native. And this conjunction of Moon and
Rahu is aspected by Jupiter. But this Jupiter is also not good.
Because, it is also under malefic influence. So, it is a bad aspect,
which will support the cruel mtensions of Moon - Rahu conjunction.
So, naturally the native will be a criminal minded and has all the
chances become a sinner. This combination is also mentioned m
Manasagari 37.

sigmfiers of separation. So, naturally, when one of these grahas are
m any house, the native will be separated the matters indicated by

and these grahas signify separation. The third house indicates co-

brothers don’t adjust with themselves also. So, this horoscope is
good example for the combination of separation.
8.1.3.9 Prahara yoga Or Avaqhada yoga
      This combination is formed by Mars and Ketu and also the
lords of signs occupied by Mars and Ketu In this combination, the
native will have a problem m one of the parts of his body indicated
by Mars and Ketu. The twelve houses m the horoscope mdicate
different parts of the native’s body. The problems may occur m the
form of an accident like fire accident or weapon accident and also
in the form of a disease in a particular part of the body. This is
called as Prahara yoga or Avaghada yoga39. When Mars and Ketu are
indicating the legs, the native will have some problems related to
his legs.

8.1.3.X0 Durmarana yoga
     According to Bhojaraja Dwivedi, when the ascedant lord
aspected by Moon is with Rahu m sixth, eighth or twelfth houses,
the native may have an unnatural death. The death may come m
the form an accident or suicide. I personally feel that, the
conjunction of Moon with the nodes is always bad. Because, this
conjunction will always adversely effect the mental stability of the
native. Native may have mental diseases and suicidal tendencies.
And when this conjunction comes m the most undesirable houses
i.e sixth, eight or twelfth, the native always has a chance of an
unnatural death.
     Accordmg to J N. Bhasm40, when Moon is afflicted by Rahu
and aspected by a malefic, that will create a combmation called as
Kemadruma and it will bring misery, unhappy and poor life to the
native. Vaidyanatha41 also considers this combmation and he too says
that the affliction of Rahu to Moon is very bad and will bring
poverty. Vaidyanatha calls it Daridra yoga. The affliction of Moon by
Rahu is always considered bad.
8.1.3.11 Bhiti yoga f The combination of fear )
      B. V. Raman42 has mentioned about this combmation in his
“Three hundred important combinations”. He calls this as the

combination of fear, theft and fraud. In this combination, the native
will always be doubtfull about others. He will always have the fear
that he will be cheated or robbed by others. This combination will
be formed when the lord of the ascedant is having a relationship
with one of the nodes. If the lord of ascedant is with one of the
nodes or the aspected by the nodes, this combination will be
formed. Let us know this yoga

horoscope, the lord of ascendant i.e Moon is in fifth house, m its
sign of debilitation and Ketu is also m that sign. The Moon is
aspected by the Rahu So, this horoscope has condition for the
above mentioned combination.

8.1.3.12 Bandhanayoga
      Many scholars43 have mentioned about this combination.
This yoga is formed when Saturn, the ascendant lord and the lord of
the sixth house are placed with one of the nodes m an angular
house or a triangular house. Ascedant, fourth, seventh and tenth
are angular houses and fifth and nmth are the triangular houses.
This yoga will cause the imprisonment of the native. The evil effects
of this combination will be reduced when Saturn itself is the
ascendant lord.
8.1.3.13 Jatibhrasta yoga

When the lord of ascedant is m twelfth house and Saturn and Rahu
are in the ascendant, the native will become an outcaste In this
combmation, the native will be ostracised. The position of ascedant
lord in twelfth house is not good as it is a undesirable house.
Saturn and Rahu are m ascendant which will make the ascendant
weak. The native will not show interest m his own customs, caste,
religion and belief. He will be always against his caste, because of
the bad influence of Saturn and Rahu. These people will always

mingle with lower caste people. So, this combination makes the
native an outcaste.
     These are the malefic combinations formed by the Nodes
There are many other combinations related to progeny, diseases.
Longevity etc I have explained about it m a previous chapter. Let
us see the Kalasarpa yoga formed by the nodes.
8.2 Kalasarpa yoga
     The most frightening and interesting combmation formed by
the nodes is kalasarpa yoga. This combination is not mentioned m
any of the astrological text But, no other combmation has
attracted the people like this combmation and this combination is
gettmg more attention than any other yoga Ancient astrological
scholars have not      said anything about this yoga But, many
modem scholars have accepted this combmation and they have
given the effects of this combination also. With the help of these
opinion of modem scholars, let us study kalasarpa yoga

The above verse says about kalasarpa yoga. It is said that this verse
belongs to Bhrgumaharsi This yoga is formed when all the grahas are

hemmed in between Rahu and Ketu Accordmg to some scholars it
will be formed when Rahu is in one of the first houses and Ketu
should be m one of the last six houses. The other seven grahas
must be hemmed m between Rahu and Ketu. But, there is
differences among the scholars regarding the starting of this
combination. Should grahas be between Rahu and Ketu taking the
placement of Rahu as the starting point or shall take placement of
Ketu as the starting point. And, we must keep m mmd that both the
nodes have reverse movements. If Rahu is m Gemini and Ketu in
Sagittarius, all the grahas should be between Taurus and
Capricorn or Cancer and Scorpio So, this pomt itself is very
controversial. But, generally modem astrologers consider both as
kalasarpa yoga
      There are twelve types of kalasarpa yoga   Let us know them.
They are-
8.2.1 Ananta kalasarpa yoga -
      When Rahu is in the ascedant and Ketu in the seventh house,
Ananta kalasarpa yoga is formed. The native who is having this yoga
will be mentally disturbed, evil minded, prone to the diseases of
mouth and brain, sexually immoral, has to struggle a lot to succeed
in life and has a unhappy married life.

8.2.2 Kulika kalasarpa yoga
      When Rahu is m the second house and Ketu m the eighth
house, this yoga will be formed. Under this yoga, the native will be
unhealthy, his financial condition will be bad, will face domestic
troubles and gets separated from the spouse.
8.2.3 Vasuki kalasarpa yoga
   This is formed when Rahu is m third house, and Ketu is m the
ninth house The native with this yoga will be troubled by siblings,
will be irreligious, will have a career with lots of ups and down.
8.2.4 sahkhaphala kalasarpa yoga
      When Rahu is m fourth house and Ketu m the tenth house,
this yoga will be formed and the native will have lot of problem with
mother, vehicles, property, friends and relatives.
8.2.5 Padma kalasarpa yoga
      When Rahu is in the fifth house and Ketu in the eleventh
house, Padma kalasarpa yoga is formed. The native will be unhappy
with children, mentally disturbed, character less, will bring ill
repute etc.

8.2.6 Mahapadma kalasarpa yoga
      It is formed when Rahu is m sixth house and Ketu is m twelfth
house. The native having this yoga will involve m love affairs,
native’s character will be doubtful, will face problems from enemies,
will get trouble from diseases also.
8.2.7 Taksaka kalasarpa yoga
      This yoga is formed when Rahu is m seventh house and Ketu
m ascedant. The native will face losses m partnerships, a unhappy
married life, suffers from sexual diseases and has to undertake
unpleasant foreign travels
8.2.8 Karkotaka kalasarpa yoga
      When Rahu is in eighth house and Ketu m the second house,
this yoga_will be formed Under this yoga, the native will suffer from
financial ups and downs, will face frequent health problems, will
have troubles with his family members, gets mjured by weapons
and his career will face many ups and downs.
8.2.9 sankhanada kalasarpa yoga
      It is formed when Rahu is in the ninth house and Ketu in the
third house. When this yoga is there m a chart, the native gets little
happiness from father, will have problem with his children and
struggle hard to get success in life.

8.2.10 Pataka kalasarpa yoga
       It is formed when Rahu is m tenth house and Ketu in the
fourth house. The native will be rude, cruel, adament m nature and
unadjustable Native will be selfish,will have troubles with mother,
vehicles, relatives and friends. Native will face many ups and downs
in career.
8.2.11 Visakta kalasarpa yoga
      When Rahu is in the eleventh house and Ketu m the fifth
house, Visakta kalasarpa yoga is formed. Native will have problems
with elder brothers and sisters, will have to move away from one’s
place of birth, will face serious health problems also.
8.2.12 sesanaga kalasarpa yoga
      This yoga is formed when Rahu is in the twelfth house and
Ketu is in the sixth house and because of this yoga , the native will
be prone to accidents, serious diseases, will face problems from
secret enemies, will have ill-repute and will face eye troubles.
      These are the twelve varieties of kalasarpa yoga. This yoga is
also divided mto two groups and they are Savya kalasarpa yoga and
Apasavya kalasarpa yoga. If all the grahas fall between Rahu and Ketu
m anti- clockwise form, then it is Apasavya kalasarpa yoga . If all the

grahas fall between Ketu and Rahu m clockwise or anticlockwise
form, it is called as Savya kalasarpa yoga
Let us know the opinion of many modem scholars on kalasarpa yoga.
According to B.V Raman 46, kalasarpa yoga is not a important
combination. He also says that kalasarpa yoga has both positive and
negative influences On the negative side, this yoga will bring
domestic     problems,     unhappy        married   life,   chances   of
imprisonment, serious diseases etc On this positive side, this yoga
will make the native hard working, successful and spiritualistic. In
this yoga if ascedant is also hemmed m between Ketu and Rahu with
other grahas, the effects will be very bad But, if ascedant is
between Rahu and Ketu then all the negative effects will be nullified.
And, if one of the seven grahas is with Rahu or Ketu or outside the
Rahu - Ketu axis, then the yoga itself will be cancelled. According to
Raman, we must consider all the positive and negative matters in a
chart. He says that, any single yoga like kalasarpa will never
completely influence the entire horoscope of a person. He adds
that, kalasarpa yoga has little significance m a native’s chart.
      Prof N. E. Muthuswamy47 has accepted the existence of
kalasarpa yoga According to Muthuswamy, the nodes indicate the
effects of the deeds done in previous births. So kalasarpa yoga also
indicates these effects. Generally this is not a good yoga. But, if the

yoga is under beneflc influence, this elevates the person to dizzy
heights and the native enjoys high position and rank m life. It also
causes ups and downs in life
     According to Prof. P. S. Sastri48, kalasarpa yoga is applicable to
mundane astrology He says that for kalasarpa yoga to apply, Rahu
should be m the first six houses of a horoscope and all the grahas
should be between Rahu and Ketu. The backward movement of Rahu
and Ketu should be kept m the mmd and no graha should join
Rahu or Ketu as m such a case,         kalasarpa yoga will be cancelled.
Sastri accepts six varieties of kalasarpa yoga covering houses one
and seven, two and eight, three and nme, four and ten, five and
eleven, six and twelve. When the first and seventh houses are
involved, it is only for spiritual purposes If the second and eighth
are mvolved, it is bad for finances The one involving the third and
ninth houses make one run after unpopular causes. The one
involving the fourth     and    tenth houses brings         difficulties,
disappomtments, failures and disgrace. The one involving the 5th
and 11th gives bad friends and makes one misuse the trust reposed
m him. The last variety can cause imprisonment.
      Prof. P. S. Sastri explains the varieties of kalasarpa yoga in
different manner. According to Sastri, when there is kalasarpa yoga
and if Jupiter associates with ascedant or Rahu, it is called

Mahapadma yoga . These two are benefic and harmless yogas If the
Mercury is similarly placed it is sankha yoga which too is harmless.
If the Moon is like wise placed, it is Ananta yoga   and if the Sun is
thus placed, it is Vasuki These two are mild If Mars, Mandi and
Saturn are thus associated, these yogas are called Taksaka , Gulika ,
and karkotaka   respectively. These three are ferocious, extremely
malefic.
      David Frawley49 has also accepted kalasarpa yoga. He calls this
combination as “the serpent of time’ He says that this yoga causes
unpredictability,   unexpected   difficulties,   strange   events   and
psychic gifts for good or ill. He adds that, it does not weigh too
heavily m it self and can be overpowered by other factors.
      Astrological scholar, Dmesh S Mathur50 has also accepted this
yoga According to him, this combination destroys the indications m
a horoscope. The house where Rahu is located suffers the most.
      Mr. L R.Chowdhari51 has also accepted this yoga He says
that this yoga is formed when Rahu is m one of the first six houses
and Ketu should be in one of the last six houses. All the other
seven grahas must be hemmed in between Rahu and Ketu. According
to Chowdhari, though one or two grahas jom Rahu or Ketu, this yoga
will operate and is not nullified. He says that this yoga has both

positive and negative influences. If any graha falls outside the axis
of Rahu and Ketu, kalasarpa yoga will be nullified. People with kalasarpa
yoga will first undergo sufferings resulting into prominence during
the second half of life despite difficulties At the end of Rahu dasa,
the native will face fall m eveiy field. All effects are realised during
the dasa and antardasas of Rahu and Ketu
      According to Mr. Chawdhari, when Ketu is m one of the first
six houses from ascedant viz, when Ketu is ahead, there is not only
kalasarpa yoga, but this variable bad influence gets transformed into
a powerful Rajayoga called “Kalamrta yoga.” This yoga confers high
position wealth, name and fame to a very high post and position
after hard work at the early age.
      Mr. K. N Rao has rejected the existence of kalasarpa yoga K. N.
Rao has done many researches on this yoga and he has come to the
conclusion that there is no such yoga He says that this yoga is the
real source of money for astrologers. He adds that kalasarpa yoga is
only a superstition and not a astrological principle of any validity.
Rao says that, he has not seen a single case of kalasarpa yoga in
which when favourable dasas came and there were good yogas,
success was not achieved, Rahu or Ketu joined, these achievement
came m their dasas also. He says that when there were problems m

a horoscope considered to be the effects of kalasarpa yoga were
clearly because of some other reasons. K. N. Rao has completely
declined the kalasarpa yoga.

country and bloodshed as the effects of kalasarpa yoga But, all these

nations and India is m a position to export goods to other
countries. In the agricultural field, India has made remarkable

Whether all these achievements are the bad effects of kalasarpa yoga.

kalasarpa yoga. But, her life is an example to show the non-existence
of kalasarpa yoga. The ruling period of Rahu was a remarkable one in
her career. In the ruling period of Rahu, she created a record for
holding the office of the Prime minister of England for the longest
term. Her horoscope is an eye opener to those who have the fear of

period of Rahu and Ketu But m this horoscope, the ruling period of
Rahu was a remarkable one.
      All these example prove the myth behind the kalasarpa yoga. I
personally feel that there is no such combination. I have not seen a
single horoscope were this combination can be held responsible for
the failures and sufferings. According to me, the ruling periods of
Rahu and Ketu must be interpreted on their relationship with other
grahas and placement. If Rahu and Ketu are badly placed or badly
aspected or badly associated, then their periods will do bad though
kalasarpa yoga is not there m the horoscope. If the nodes are well
placed or associated with exalted grahas or associated with the
