HOW TO USE THIS COMPETENCY- BASED LEARNING MATERIAL

Welcome!

The unit of competency, Preparing Good composting Site and Raw

materials is one of the core competencies of ORGANIC
AGRICULTURE PRODUCTION NCII, a course which comprises the
knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a trainee to achieve to be
eligible for an institutional and TESDA national assessments.

The module, <PRODUCE ORGANIC FERTILIZER=, contains training

materials and activities related with the skills and knowledge required
to produce organic fertilizers which include tasks such as preparing
composting area and raw materials and carrying-out composting
activities and finally, harvesting of fertilizer.

In this module, you are required to go through a series of learning

activities in order to complete each learning outcome. A Learning
Outcome has Information Sheets Self-Checks Operation Sheets
and Task/Job Sheets.

Follow and perform the activities on your own. If you have questions,
do not hesitate to ask for assistance from your Trainer.

Remember to:
 Work through all the information and complete the activities in
each section.
 Read information sheets and complete the self-check. Suggested
references are included to supplement the materials provided in
this module.

 Most probably, your trainer will also be your supervisor or

manager. He is there to support you and show the correct way to
do things.

 You will be given plenty of opportunities to ask questions and

practice on the job. Make sure you practice your new skills
during regular work shifts. This way, you will improve your
speed, memory and your confidence.

 Use the Self-Checks, Operation Sheets or Task or Job Sheets at

the end of each section to test your own progress. Use the

INFORMATION SHEET No. 3.1-1

<CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD COMPOSTING SITE=

Learning Objectives:

1. Determine the good composting Site

Introduction:

Composting has been used as a means of

recycling organic matter back into the soil
to improve soil structure and fertility. The
composting process has received much
attention in recent years because of
pollution concerns and the search for
environmentally sound methods for treating
waste.

Why composting?

1. Healthier plants.
2. Composting saves your money.
3. Composting is practical and convenient.
4. Composting is a good alternative to land filling.

Good site selection:

 area without rain and direct sunlight
 flood free
 accessible to water supply and source of compost materials

INFORMATION SHEET No. 3.1-2

<RAW MATERIALS USED FOR COMPOSTING=

Learning Objectives:
After reading this Information Sheet, you should be able to:

1. Identify common raw materials for composting.

2. Ensure proper decomposition of raw materials for plants use

What is decomposition?
The process of breaking down of solid matter back to its original form, where
nutrients can be available for the use of the plants as fertilizers.

Types of Composting
There can be different approach in composting and these are effective in many
ways depending on the available local materials in your area or even the
weather condition may affect the process.
To ensure proper composting, these steps must be adhered to in order to have
success in production of high quality organic fertilizer.
Common raw materials available at your farm:
 Grass clippings
 Forage grasses
 Kitchen refuse
 Animal waste (except dogs and cats)
 Wood shaving
 Rice hull

Properties of nitrogen sources

Nitrogen sources come in many forms, but there generally in farming are call
green fertilizers. Fresh cut leaves and grass are great sources of nitrogen
sources. Animal manure such as chicken, cows, hogs and even rabbits have
the same high nitrogen content level.

Properties of carbon sources

Carbon sources of commonly known as brown fertilizers. These are also

generally available at the farm but some may not be as these are some, most
of the time by product of manufacting, including rice hull as produced by
milling the rice, or wood shaving, when wood is cut.

What action may be taken?

The first step is to develop the sources of these materials and
determine how they can be delivered to your farm.
You cannot expect that all items can be available at your farm so
its key to check other sources for sustainable production.
Green sources have to be obtained on the very day the mixing
will be performed, usually in the morning to ensure that
nutrients are still at the leaves and no on the roots, when the
harvesting of green materials was done in the afternoon.

Brown Sources can be acquired in advance and store at dark and dry place.

Mixing of raw materials

Once proper ratio has been determined, mix the materials and ensure proper
distribution of ALL raw materials in order to distribute the decomposing

INFORMATION SHEET No. 3.1-3

<Proper procedure in acquiring and preparing all raw materials=

Learning Objectives:
After reading this Information Sheet, you should be able to:
1. Acquire all raw materials with proper ratio for producing organic
fertilizers
2. Determine if the choice of materials will provide the best ratio for the
plants

Introduction

Determining the raw materials available at the farm

is the first step to produce organic fertilizer
Usually the first task is to prepare the location of
compost or compost pit.
The area chosen has to be flood free and protected
from any animal access.
Standard procedure may vary on the availability of
supplies from the farm.

What materials should I use?

The locally sourced materials are to be measured in order to ensure that the
target carbon to nitrogen ration is met.
Options include:
 Nitrogen Sources: Kakawati, Gresh cut grass, kitchen refuse and other
forage grassess
 Carbon Sources includes Rice hull, wood shavings, dried leaves and used
news papers
Be very creative in ensuring balance in carbon to nitrogen ratio of 30:1. This
will ensure that the production of fertilizers available for plants use is also
balanced. This will also prevent re application, invite unwanted pests and
mortality of plants.
All materials have to be chopped in order to speed up the decomposition
process, making the compost ready for use as soon as possible.

Measuring and mixing the raw materials

When mixing the raw materials ensure that PPE is worn during the whole
process.
The following is a representative guide of what is involved:
1. Wear protective equipment (PPE)
2. Harvest all raw materials listed
3. Cut the fresh leaves to at least 1 inch size
4. Pour all materials in the compost pit
5. Mix and then cover all materials
6. Pour liquid IMO in the mix
7. Cover the mix and wait for 14 days
The mix have to be untouched for 14 days to ensure that the decomposition
process starts. This is called anaerobic composting, where the mix will need
to reach the 36 degrees celsius temperature to speed up the decomposition of
all organic matter.

How to check the compost

On the first sever days of the compost, check the temperature of the mix is at
the optimum temperature
One can do this by sticking a bolo in the middle of the mound and measure
the heat level of the bolo when pulled out after at least about 5 minutes of the
metal part stuck in the pit.
Cover the area again after checking and wait for the remaining 7 days.
