COURSE OUTLINE

2 Objectives The aim of Report Writing Skills is to meet the basic

needs of students in scientific or technical fields. In
this age of information technology where
professionals and organizations have enhanced
interaction than ever before, our professionals must
be equipped with necessary tools of writing and
communicating technically sound, accurate, and
clear information. The forms of these
communications may include letters, memos,
emails, proposals, reports, advertisements, manuals
and so many other things.

Technical writing, like any form of communication,

is an interactive process that involves writers and
readers who respond to one another. Technical
writers create documents, employing expository
devices like definition, description, explanation and
analysis, to persuade readers to take action or make
decisions. Consequently, efficient technical writers
must have:

 A clear understanding of the subject matter

 A thorough understanding of the targeted
audience(s)
 A strong mastery of the required tools and
forms of technical writing

The course is geared towards empowering the young

professionals with the dynamics of technical writing
in a systematic, practical, and participatory manner.
They are taught and trained how they should switch
over from literary style, which is imaginative and
subjective, to technical style, which is clear, precise,
direct, targeted, and objective. After completion of
this course, students should be able to:

 Identify characteristics of technical writing

 Know the processes and stages of technical
writing
 Analyze audience
 Understand and practice technical exposition
techniques such as definition, description,
explanation, and analysis
 Know techniques of technical research
 Carry out technical/business correspondence
