MODULE 1 ACTIVITIES INTRODUCTION TO ETHICS
ASSESSMENT TASKS 1
Answer the given questions below. Copy first the question before you give your answer.
1. In your own words, differentiate ethics and morality.
Ethics are a set of a standard behaviour of an individual where we ought to do what is wrong
and right usually in terms of rights, obligations, fairness, or specific virtues. Ethics, for example,
refers to those standards that impose the reasonable obligations to refrain from rape, stealing,
murder, assault, slander, and fraud. Ethical standards also include those that enjoin virtues of
honesty, compassion, and loyalty. While morality refer to an individual's own principles
regarding right and wrong. Itis the one who speak or judge against our actions whether it is good
or right. It also helps us how we can distinguish between right and wrong. It enables us to see
the consequences of our actions, and it motivates us to do what is right.
2. Cite at least three real life situations or scenarios to show their differences.
When a stalker of your friend asked you where she live, but you say “you don’t know” even if
you knew because you know what are the true motives of your friend. One of the maxims of
morality is honesty, telling the truth at any time. However, telling the truth is not always the
right thing to do. Your code of ethics telling you to lie for the sake of the security of your friend.
You stole the dog of your neighbour because you always see the poor dog hurting by the
abusive owner. Your morality says that stealing are bad, but your code of ethics telling you that
it was the right thing to do to save the poor dog from the abusive pet owner.
You are doing charity because you made a vow to our God to save your dying mother. Your
morality telling you to do good things like charity so you can help people and your code of ethics
telling you to do charity just because you made a vow to our God.
3. Is it ok to rationalize? When and why?
It is ok to rationalize only on specific event with a right analyzation of ourselves toward on our
decisions and actions because sometimes doing right things because of our set of morality even
we knew it can harm others is not the right thing to do. For example telling lies to your daughter
that you are only leaving for an hour because she would be sad and will not let you go if she
knew that you would go to abroad for a year to give her a good life. Your morality telling you to
tell the truth but you lied and rationalize your decision. But in other cases rationalizing can be
not acceptable such as killing someone because he killed your father or stealing other husband
just because your husband lied to you.
4. Why do we say that ethics is not a factual knowledge like other disciplines?
Ethics remains distinct from such disciplines because it is not a matter of factual knowledge in
the way that the sciences and other branches of inquiry are. Rather, it has to do with
determining the nature of normative theories and applying these sets of principles to practical
        moral problems.
    5. What would be your biggest reason to resort to environmental ethics? To development ethics?
Environmental ethics is essential for protecting the environment, species, and resources. It
promotes sustainable practices and encourages people to become more aware of the impact
their actions have on the environment. It emphasizes the interconnectedness of all living things
and the need to respect them.

ASSESSMENT TASKS 2
Answer the given questions below. Copy first the question before you give your answer.
Judy, a gifted high school student, wants to become a lawyer in the future. Because she comes
from a poor family, she needs a scholarship in order to attend college. Some of her classes require
students to do extra research projects in order to get an A. The school has 3 few older PCs but there are
always long lines of students waiting to use them during the school day. After school, she usually works
at a parttime job to help support her family.
One evening Judy visits the library of a private college few miles from her family's apartment, and
she finds plenty of unused PCs connected to the Internet. She surreptitiously looks over the shoulder of
another student to learn a valid login/password combination. Judy returns to the library several times a
week, and by using its PCs and printers she efficiently completes the extra research projects, graduates
from high school with straight As and gets a full-ride scholarship to attend a prestigious university.
Questions:
    1. Did Judy do anything wrong?
She did ethically wrong by stealing a valid login/password combination because it is not
acceptable by others specially the student who own that valid login/password and the resources
       own by the private college.
    2. Who benefited from Judy's course of action?
She’s the one who benefited itself because she did it intentionally for the sake of her extra
       research and grades.
    3. Who was hurt by Judy's course of action?
Judy’s course of action hurt her ego because she did it in a wrong way and maybe she felt guilty
       of her action.
    4. Did Judy have an unfair advantage over her high school classmates?
She would not have an unfair advantage over her high school classmates because she only finds
another solution on her problem but in unethical way. I would say she have an unfair advantage
       over herself ego and moral.
    5. Would any of your answers change if it turns out Judy did not win a college scholarship after all
and is now working at a burger joint?
No, because if you are willing to get what you are pursuing, you will get it in an ethical way. If it’s
not meant for her to get a college scholarship even she did the same way, nothing will change
because it was her who did a wrong decisions of solving her problem.
    6. Are there better ways Judy could have accomplished her objectives?
Yes, she can find another ways but not stealing and using a private college resources. She can
find another pc’s outside of her school, renting a pc since she has a part time job to support her
       family also for herself.

ASSESSMENT TASKS 3
The class will be divided into three groups to share thoughts to the class on the assigned case
CASESTUDY2
A woman who live her life short and unhappy died recently. But before her death, she discussed
her wishes with her mother-in-law. She had nobody to tell her wishes being orphaned by her parents
and immediate family. Her mother-in-law said she would do what her dying daughter-in-law’s wishes.
What she wanted was for her ashes to be scattered in the ocean near a place she had lived one of those
few brief happy times of her adult life. In her will, it was also stated that the mother-in-law would take
control of her estate.
When the woman died, instead of scattering her ashes in the ocean as she wished, her motherin-law
buried her ashes in a family plot near her in-law’s home. She claimed she wanted to keep the
ashes close to her because of her own grief.
Assume that the mother-in-law is legally required to follow the wishes stated in the will, but that
no one will check and it is very unlikely that the mother-in-law will have any problem with the law.
TO THINK ABOUT:
What are the issues of integrity posed in the case study?
The mother-in-law promised her daughter in-law to do anything she wishes but the mother-in-
law did not follow what she promised to her. The mother in-law lost her integrity because she
did not behaves ethically and doesn’t do the right thing, even behind closed doors.
What are the issues of ethics posed in the case study?
The issues of her ethics become unethically wrong accordance to her promises to the decease
        woman.
What options does the mother-in-law have?
The option she would do was to ask permission to the dying woman to keep her ashes until her
grief. If the woman agree then she had already permission to keep her ashes and can be legally
stated in the will so she would not have a problem with the law and to her integrity.
What should she do and why?
The mother-in-law should follow what she promised as respect to the wish of the deceased
        woman.
What are your thoughts about this case?
My thought was the integrity you build for yourself as you promised the woman to do what she
wishes for. If you lost your integrity because of the selfishness then you did not behave
accordance to your ethics to do the right thing.
