Direction: Observe and examine the advertisement shown. Answer each of the key questions
below.
1. What is the message of the ad?
The marketer used the concept that the scotch tape was an exceptionally beneficial and
useful material as it could seal the baby's mouth to underline how efficient the tape, labeled
"3M Scotch," is. We are fully cognizant of how strenuous it is to be a mother, caring for and
satisfying the needs of a child, notably during those instances when the youngster is
sobbing hysterically. In an attempt to provide mothers' comfort while their newborns are
being fussy, the advertiser endeavored to convince consumers that the product's adhesivity
can stop a baby's mouth.
2. How is the message underscored? What semiotics are used? (Text? Color?
Images? Others?)
Different semiotic strategies were employed in the advertisement to accentuate the
idea. Included in this is the infant, who functioned as a dilemma in the advertisement. The
tape that is being used to close the baby's mouth may offer a fix. It is quite obvious from the
text "When mommy just needs some quiet time" that the advertiser was aiming to provide
a remedy for the mother, particularly during times when she needed a break. The
commercial was shot in a home, which most likely depicts an environment in which the
need for the tape is greatest.
3. Is there any individual or group that may be offended by the ad?
I believe that this advertisement may offend a certain demographic. For the sake of
convenience, parents might perceive this commercial as a condemnation of their parenting
approaches. Additionally, the way the advertisement depicted the image of the baby with a
tape in his or her mouth could give the wrong impression and cause a dispute with the
authorities or staff members of the department responsible for children's rights. Last but
not least, this advertisement may insult even a typical citizen because it encourages
brutality.
4. Is there another way of presenting or delivering the message?
There are various ways to express how useful and beneficial the scotch that is being
marketed is. A smarter move for marketing sticky tape could be to illustrate how it is used in
realistic applications. Without using a powerless youngster, they can transport or publicize
the product. They can also alter their branding since consumers these days mostly rely on
the product's name since businesses that incorporate brand positioning into their regular
marketing strategies eventually build up better brand values and receive favorable feedback
from customers.
5. Do you think the ad is ethical?
The commercial is disrespectful and indicates unacceptable behavior, in my viewpoint,
making it immoral. It is obviously unethical to tape shut a baby's mouth and use it to
promote a product to the public. It is child maltreatment and perhaps life-threatening to
seal a child's mouth with tape.
