Assessment #1: Evaluating Advertisement
1. What is the message of the ad?
Antonio Federici ad convey the immaculate conception of their
ice cream featuring a pregnant nun holding it. The ad conveys the
special or divine creation of ice cream as it is highlighted with the
caption “immaculately conceived”.
2. How is the message underscored? What semiotics are used? (Text?
Color? Image?) Others?)
In advertising a chocolate gelato with a pregnant nun, they have
successfully impart the idea of ice cream as one to prosper. They
poetically impart it by using sacred word such as “immaculate”, they
also uses black and white scheme that reflects intense yet pure flavor.
Most of the space is taken by the picture of the pregnant nun, making
it possible to think that the idea has similarities in creation of
something divine and special.
3. Is there any individual or group that may be offended by the ad?
Within the hidden intelligent and challenging advertising, Roman
Catholics find it offensive as this allegedly implying mockery in biblical
birth of Jesus, virgin Mary’s conception of the child of God.
4. Is there another way of presenting or delivering the message?
In delivering special and pure-made product, one can input all
the savory ingredients, keep the dark colored theme to present the
luxury and elegance of the product. Lastly captioned it with a
catchphrase such as “flawlessly made” or “lusso gelato” from Italian
language translated to luxury ice cream.
5. Do you think the ad is ethical?
The ad is bold and challenging but also resulted distortion and
mockery of religious belief.

1. What is the message of the ad?
3M Scotch advertise a duct tape that is multi-purpose given that
it is placed in the baby’s mouth to somewhat render him by making a
noise. It is articulated with the notion from upper right of the ad.
2. How is the message underscored? What semiotics are used? (Text?
Color? Image?) Others?)
Promoting a tape in sealing baby’s mouth can be concluded that
it is highly adhesive. Using the tape at the top-corner as a banner
highlighted the text as the color contrast each other. The notion
playfully meant that the duct tape is considered multi-purpose that it
can be used even in skin. Apart by that, the ad also uses baby as they
can be very loud. It is also in white scheme that implies safety, another
main function of tapes.
3. Is there any individual or group that may be offended by the ad?
Generally, the ad implies discrimination to babies. Parents will
felt offended by subjecting a baby in such way. Putting a tape in
someone’s mouth to hinder them from making a noise is disrespectful,
even more to unaware child.
4. Is there another way of presenting or delivering the message?
Another way of marketing a multi-purpose tape is considering an
image of the stickiness of it. Putting different images where it can be
used and highlighting the word “multi-purpose”.
5. Do you think the ad is ethical?
Using a baby for a duct tape advertisement sounds and looks off.
A baby is a very delicate human being, they are fragile and must kept
with care.

1. What is the message of the ad?
It implies that hatred and complication between two parties and
it is advocated to stop. The reconcilement kiss of Barack Obama and Ju
Hintao.
2. How is the message underscored? What semiotics are used? (Text?
Color? Image?) Others?)
Advertisement uses picture of politicians and minimal caption
that says a lot about advocating the reversing of the current heat
between Barack and Hintao.
3. Is there any individual or group that may be offended by the ad?
Although the ad implies to stop the hate, the visual
representation of two country representatives kissing looks offending
for them as they are being edited in doing things they did not do.
4. Is there another way of presenting or delivering the message?
It could be represented by Barack and Hintao exchanging
handshakes to each other as that could be a sign of comradeship.
5. Do you think the ad is ethical?
Promoting “unhate” for global peace is helpful for people that are
being trapped in between, however, the informality of the ad implies
unethical behavior. The two of them are still leader of their own races
and the act projected in the ad implies disrespect to them.

1. What is the message of the ad?
The ad indicates a man that is going to do a murderous act.
Somehow, Prius finds a positive side onto it as the man drives their car.
2. How is the message underscored? What semiotics are used? (Text?
Color? Image?) Others?)
It is underscored by the text on the bottom left that says, “Well,
at least he drives a PRIUS.” That could mean that it made the man cool
while doing bad act. Shades of dark are also shown in the ads
complementing the ray of beam that came from the headlight.
3. Is there any individual or group that may be offended by the ad?
The offense on this ad may be sensitive to child as they should
not be seeing such act as if it was normal. Legal forces or people that
are well aware about the law may also be offended as the act are being
ignored just because the man drives a well-known vehicle.
4. Is there another way of presenting or delivering the message?
Prius must start promoting their car by just modeling it along
with a respected man or woman. This could give off the same idea that
these kind of cars are driven by those who deserves it.
5. Do you think the ad is ethical?
Taking a law-breaking act as lightly seems off and the act itself
inside the ad is unethical. It lacks moral principles that must be
considered in advertising a popular product.
