STILLWATER SOCKS

COLORFUL, CLASSIC PATTERNS for EVERY KNITTER
¥These subtle little socks are an excellent way to bring
texture and interest, while still highlighting the
beauty of the yarn you are working with
Stillwater is worked from the cuff down, with mock
cables hemming in an easy-to- memorize texture
panel comprised of simple knit and purl stitches.
The toes are grafted used kitchener stitch, an
elegant finish that is seamless and neat.
SIZES (measured around the circumference of the ball
‘of the foot, in inches)

GAUGE
40 sts over 4 inches, measured over pattern, knit in
the round and blocked
MATERIALS.
‘+ US a double pointed needles, small circular, or 40”
circular (for magic loop)
‘+ askein of fingering weight sock yarn (approximately
400 yards, though you will most likely not use the entire
skein depending on how long you make your socks)
* Optional — 2 mini skein of sack yarn for the cuffs and toes (approximately Bo yards, though again, you will not

INSTRUCTIONS,
cuff
With CC, CO 60 (69, 75, 84) sts. PM and join for working in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
Establish 2.x: ribbing pattern. [k2, pa] around to end
Continue in ribbing pattern until work measures 1.5 inches from cast on edge.
Leg
Switch to MC.
Sizes $ and XL: k one round
Size M: ka, k2tog, k around to end.
Size L: ka, mal, k around to end.
You should now have 60 (68, 76, 84) sts on your nedles,
Establish Mock Cable and Texture Panel Pattern:
Row a: p2, si 2, k2, psso the two stitches you just knit, p2, k16 (20, 24, 28) sts, p2, sh, k2, psso the two stitches

Row 2: p2, ki, yo, ka, p2, k 26 (20, 24, 28) sts, p2, ka, yo, k1, p2, karound to end,
Row 3: p2, k3, p2, k 26 (20, 24, 28) sts, p2, k3, p2, k around to end
Row 4: 92, k3, 92, (ki, p1] 8 (20, a2, 14) times, p2, k3, p2, k aroundto end,
Repeat rows 1-4 until leg measures 6.5", or your desired length, The mock cable and texture panel will be on the
front of the sock. The back of the sock will be plain stockinetteMock cable and texture panel on the front of the Stockinette stitch on the back of the sock

Heel Flap
The heel flap is worked across the back half of your stitches. You will be knitting back and forth across
30 (34, 38, 42) sts
K in established mock cable and texture panel pattern as set above across the first half of your stitches. Next, work
the heel flap as follows:
Row a: [sla, k1] to end. Turn work
Row 2: sla, p toend. Turn work.
Row 3: sls, [sla, ka] to last two sts, k2. Turn work.
Row 4: sla, p to end. Turn work
Repeat these four rows until heel flap measures 2 (a, 2.5, 2.5)”. End on a purl row
Turn Heel
Row a: sia, kg (7, 29, 24), ssk, ka, turn
Row 2: sia, p3, p2tog, pr, tum:
Row 3: sla, kg, ssk, ka, turn
Row 4: sla, ps, p2tog, p3, turn

Gusset
Starting on the left side of your heel flap, pick up and knit ag (27, 29, 2) sts, place BOR marker, k across front of
sock (keeping in mock cable and texture panel pattern!), PM, pick up and knit ag (a7, 29, 2a) sts, knit across heel
flap, k down the first set of picked-up sts to the BOR marker. You are now ready to begin the decreases,
*You will continue to work the mock cable and texture panel pattern on the front half of your sts (which makes up
the front of your sock). You will be knitting even in stockinette on the other half of your sts (which makes up the
sole, or bottom of your sock).*
The gusset decreases are worked as follows
Row a: Work across front of sock to marker in mock cable and texture panel pattern as set. SI marker, ka, ssk, k
around to 3sts before BOR marker, k2tog, ka.
Row 2: Work even with no decreases,
Repeat these two rounds until you have 60 (68, 76, 84) sts on your needles
Foot
You will now be working on the foot of your sock, with no decreases until you get to the toes, as follows:
Continue working the mock cable and texture panel pattern across the top half of your stitches as established,
and stockinette sts on the bottom half of your stitches,
Continue until work reaches top of pinky toe. It is important to try the sock on periodically to determine when the
sock reaches this lengthToes
Switch to CC and begin toe decreases.
Row a: ki, ssk, k 24 (28, 32, 36) sts, k2tog, ka, pm, ka, ssk, k 24 (2B, 32, 36) sts, k2tog, ka
Row 2: k
Row 3: ki, ssk, k to 3 sts before marker, k2tog, ka, slip marker, ka, ssk, k to 3 sts before BOR, k2tog, ka.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until 24 (28, 32, 36) sts remain, Using Kitchener Stitch, graft toe sts closed.
FINISHING
Weave in all ends and block your sock! Cast the second sock on quickly to avoid the dreaded second sock
syndrome!
