Generic Name amantadine


Trade Name Symmetrel
Class antiviral medicine
Action The mechanism of its antiparkinsonic effect is not fully
understood, but it appears to be releasing dopamine
from the nerve endings of the brain cells, together
with stimulation of norepinephrine response. It also
has NMDA receptor antagonistic effects. The antiviral
mechanism seems to be unrelated. The drug
interferes with a viral protein, M2 (an ion channel),
which is needed for the viral particle to become
"uncoated" once it is taken inside the cell by
endocytosis.

Indication/s For the chemoprophylaxis, prophylaxis, and treatment


of signs and symptoms of infection caused by various
strains of influenza A virus. Also for the treatment of
parkinsonism and drug-induced extrapyramidal
reactions.
Contraindication/s
Hypersensitivity. Amantadine hypersensitivity,
rimantadine hypersensitivity

Dialysis, renal failure, renal impairment


Side effect/s Nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, 

Common interaction/s
with other medication/s  Amantadine, a dopamine agonist is reported to act by
releasing dopamine from the dopaminergic nerve
terminals as an anti-Parkinsonian drug

Nursing consideration/s / Do not receive a nasal flu vaccine while using


precaution/s amantadine, and for at least 48 hours after your last
dose. The vaccine may not work as well during this
time, and may not fully protect you from disease.
Do not drink alcohol. Dangerous side effects could
occur
