INTROD
Reading plays a very crucial role in man's life as reading influences one's way of

thinking, which consequently affects one's total development as a person. Although

man's development is influenced by many factors, learning is obtained through reading.

Consequently, individuals must find ways how to develop and improve their reading

comprehension skills.

In response to COVID-19, many schools across the globe have closed and

transitioned to home-based learning (HBL) or distance learning, affecting over 90

percent of the world’s student population.

With these new normal settings in education system, the Department of

Education through the initiative of DepEd-Sarangani headed by Division Alternate

Reading Coordinator Sir John P. Constantino and the rest of the team in reading come

up with this unique program and intervention to continue the learning of the learners

through reading at home with the assistance of tutor volunteers.

As I watched the webinar conducted by Sir John Constatino the Read at Home

stands for Reading Enrichment and Development at Home refers to the program in

support to the reading skills development advocacy among Sarangani learners or the

“Bawat Bata Bumabasa” initiative of the DepEd in general despite of the current

pandemic. This is a collaborative effort or shared leadership among the instructional

supervisors, school leaders, teachers, volunteer tutors and stakeholders which includes

the Local Government Units and Non-Government Organizations. This is a 30-40

minute reading interventions at home by the volunteer tutors.

Home-based reading tutorial is a very easy, fun and convenient to do. This is the

first year of the implementation of the home-based reading tutorial where it showcases

the talents and skills of the students especially the tutors on how she/he will deal

learners who are struggling reading even at the very moment in the new normal

education.

In response to the call of the DepEd Sarangani thru Sir Dionesio J. De Paz-

School Principal, Reading C oordinator of Spring Integrated School Maam Jimmylita E.

Manggaron, My Class Adviser Maam Lady Mae C. Lanticse and to my Reading

facilitator Sir Arbert B. Lanchita to continue learning-at-home among pupils who are

struggling in reading and tap me to become one of the reading volunteers. As a grade

12 learner of Spring Integrated School and also one of the non-readers during my

elementary days, I want to help my fellow students to learn how to read despite the

pandemic that we are facing today. I want also to challenge myself on how to become a

teacher at that time and how to deal pupils who are struggling reading. I want to expand

my horizons and experiences and to have a fruitful learning at home during this time

that’s why I grab this opportunity to become one of the reading volunteers in Spring

Integrated School.

Since last year I became one of an active members in the reading tutorial
program in our school but not as active as this time. There’s a lot of hindrances in
order for me to achieve the goals of this program. But I never hesitated to give
the best that I can to my tutees especially in reading because in the first place it is
really my passion to share the skills and talents that I have.

I want to become a teacher someday that’s why I embrace the new normal
setting in education especially in delivering reading to the pupils who are
struggling. Since then, I always strive for something new, something challenging
that will help me become a better version of me.

This time I was so nervous explaining to
them on how to read properly the basic
English words. “Naga shacky ko pero
ginatry naku nga dile nila mapansin para
dile sila ma distract”. The tutees were
just listening while I am talking and
reading the words in the flash cards. It
seems that they were so serious and
willing to learn. Because after I
introduced them, I applied the one-on-
one tutorial because there were some of
them already knew the words and some
were not yet.

When I am teaching this kindergarten, first it


was very difficult because she was not
interested at all. Since she is still a kinder, I am
just teaching her on how to recognize colors
and determining proper and basic English
alphabets. “Pero naa man iyang mama maong
wala ra sad ko kayo naglisod sa pagtudlo niya
kay usahay dali ra siya mawala sa iyang
interest sa pagpaminaw ug pag execute sa
mga activities”.

This time when we had our tutorial


session at the garden area of my
tutees. Even our place is not so
convenient but my tutees are still
listening and wants to learn from
my discussions. “Bisan dire me na
lugar padayon japon me kay ang
among gigamit last meeting
gigamit ani nga time”.

When one of the parents of my


tutee signed a parental consent
giving consent to her child to
join in my home-based reading
tutorial. “Wala jud siya
nagduha-duha sa pagpirma ug
pagpasali sa iyang anak sa
maong program sa
eskwelahan”.

One of the highlights during the tutorial session were the things which I shared to
my tutees. Herewith are some of the pictorials DURING the reading tutorial
sessions.

During this time, I conducted an


orientation to my tutees. I shared
to them the programs of school
and what are the benefits they
can get out of this free reading
tutorial sessions. I don’t waste the
time because right after the
orientation I started to introduced
the materials that we are going to
use and how it is easy to
understand. I used Big Books and
other reading materials which I
borrowed from the SLRC of the

First, it was not an easy task to do since I am just a student who happened to be a little
reading teacher to those pupils who are struggling in reading. But that day, I really really
do my best to impart to them the necessary skills on how to recognize words. But the
problem is “daghan gyud sa ilaha ang maglisod pa gyud ug basa, kanang basa nga
straight. Kinahanglan pagyud nila ug assistance, so mao gyud ni ang pinakalisod sa part
sa pagiging tutor. So we started with the basic recognizing letters from English Alphabet
down to combination of letters and forming basic words which they could easy
recognize.

I tried to have a one-on-


one to them and even
extending our time just to
cope up reading simple
words composed of three
letters. I see to it that they
could remember it when
we will be having our next
session. I let them take
note the things that we
discussed and familiarized
it in their respective
houses. Sometimes, I felt
grateful because I can see
the interest in their eyes-
willing to learn despiteof
our limited resources.

“Basta kong asa comfortable ang bata, didto naku sila gina assist. Pero usually naa
ragyud me sa ilang mga balay since mga pag-umangkon ra naku sila ug dali rami
magkita kita kay tapad tapad raman ang among mga bay”. That is why, I can easily
assist them in the most convenient time if they need my assistance. At the end, I was
always surprised because every time we ended our sessions, they could always say “naa
naa gyud sila’y matn-an bahala kong hinay hinay basta naa lang gyud”.

Even their parents were happy because of the program where the learning is still
continues despite the global pandemic we are facing now. I also interviewed
some of the parents about their feedbacks which can be read in the succeeding
pages specifically at the testimonies sction.

This time on of the tutees asked on


how to properly read the word. “Ang
akong gibuhat kay gi pronounce naku
ang a e i o u para maayos niya
pagpronouce ang mga words”. He
mastered the word easily because I am
just beside him watching at correcting
him every time he mispronounced the
words. I always observed him if he
really learned something or just
memorizing everything

Assisting my tutee to
familiarized the words
and how to read it
properly. I rest always
assured that he
understands well and
read the words correctly.

MY
Actually, I don’t really know my exact emotions during that time when I
accepted the challenge to become one of the tutor volunteers under Senior High
School of Spring Integrated School. I felt extreme nervous and at the same time
happy. Nervous because that’s my first time to volunteer reading outside the four
corners of the school. Usually, it happened inside the campus where I can easily
asked my teachers for an assistance if I don’t know what to do and how to deal
with my tutees. But this time, I need to work out in my own since signal is
sometimes one of the problems in communication in our place where I cannot
directly contact my teacher to clarify something.

“Ang aking nararamdaman nung mga araw na nag-tutor ako ay sobrang


kaba at may kasamang saya. May mga bata na hindi pa familiar sa mga letra
kaya nahirapan ako sa pagtuturo at kasama na rin ang kanilang attitude na
hindi maganda pero wala akong magawa dahil ito yung passion ko and
pagtuturo kaya ginawa ko ang lahat para ituro sa kanila ang mga letra na
hindi pa nila naiintindihan kaya kong ako ang tatanungin kung may
natutunan ba ang mga bata ang isasagot ko ay meron dahil ang secret lang
sa pagtuturo sa mga bata ay ang pagtitiis at buong-pusong tatanggapin ang
pagtuturo”

My Strength during Tutorial Sessions

“Magaling ako sa pagsasalita, lalong lalo na sa harap ng mga bata na kung saan
ibinibigay ko ang aking buong puso sa pagtuturo upang maintindihan nila ang
aking ipinapahiwatig at mahusay din ako sa pagdidisiplina sa mga kabataan kung
pasaway man sila at matigas ang kanilang mga ulo. Isa lamang ang sekreto at ito
ang pagsasalita o pagdidisiplina sa kanila ng maayos. May mga paraan sa
pagtuturo upang mapatupad mo ang mga gusto mong gawin sa iyong pagtuturo-
basta buong puso mo lang itong gawin”.

My Weakness during Tutorial Sessions

“Dapat pa iimprove sa akin ay kung paano magharap sa mga kabtaan while


nagtuturo. Dahil minsan may mga action ako na hindi dapat gawin sa pagtuturo
katulad nalang sa pag boblocking na hindi dapat Gawain kung tayo man ay
nagtuturo. May mga kabataan na gusto nilang malaman ang mga bagay sa ating
paligid na kung saan tayo ang magiging gabay o instrument upang alamain ang
mga bagay na kanilang gusting malaman.

I conducted my reading tutorial sessions two (2) days a week every Tuesday
and Thursday. I have six (6) tutees which I grouped them into two (2). One session
in the morning and one session for the afternoon. I consume 30-40 minutes per
session during my reading tutorial.
