Multi Cam Modernization

This document provides instructions for upgrading motors on MultiCam 5000 Series machines from MCG motors to Teknic motors. It lists the MCG motor part numbers that correspond to each axis and notes that Z-axis motors must be replaced, while X-axis motors can be replaced by either Teknic motor model. The electrical and mechanical components needed for the upgrade are identified, including crimping tools. A unique RMA process is described to return the original MCG motors after the upgrade is completed on each motor.

Upgrade from MCG to Teknic Motors (52-00845-00)

The MCG motors are no longer available, so operators can elect to upgrade their existing MCG motors to
Teknic in order to still purchase replacement parts. Not all motors have to beupgraded atthesame time.
For each upgraded motor. the corresponding drive must he reprogrammed. Operators may
choose to upgrade motors per axis (i.e. hoth X motors, single Y motor, single Z motor). but any repair to or
replacement of the motors will require that the motors bhe upgraded at that time. The replaced MCG motors
should be retumed to MultiCam per the RMA process described helow The performance of the motors and
the machine will be the same. The motor configurations and upgrade process are described below

The upgrade is currently available on all 5000 Series machines, and the MCG motor configurations are

identified below.

Upgrade Procedure

The MCG motors should be returned to MultiCam. There will be a $200 credit given to the customer for each
MCG motor received and processed.

1. Remove the axis covers over the motors. The MCG motors are located on the XA. XB, Y. and Z.

2. Locate the 19-pin encoder connector (94-02053-00) and the 5-pin power connector attached to the MCG
motor.

3. Cut the wires at the connector and remove the connectors from the motor.

4. Loosen the 4 bolts holding the motor in place and remove the MCG motor.

5. Position the Teknic motor and tighten the 4 bolts in place.

6. Review the schematic on 52-00845-00 for proper wiring information.

7. Remove about 1" (25.4mm) of wire sheathing and cover from both wires.

8. Place the heat shrink over the ends of the wire sheathingandapply heattothe shrink.

9. Combine the wires into the 19-pin connector per the schematic using the 26-18AWG Souriau crimper

The red and red-and-blue wiresfrom the encoder should be connected together as a fail-safe.

10. Attach the 19-pin connector to the motor.

11. Repeat Steps 1 - 10 for the remaining axis motors.

12. Reload the appropriate drive parameters for that machine type. The Retrofit configuration files for the
3100R and the 3100U drives are available at the following link:
