Horror vacui is a Latin term that means "fear of emptiness". It refers to the phenomenon of filling the entire surface of a space or artwork with detail and leaving as little perceived emptiness as possible. This tendency can be seen in traditional Philippine art, where every square inch is filled to the brim with no blank spaces. It is attributed to Filipino culture and way of life, where spaces are often tightly packed due to economic circumstances. The overcrowded jeepneys and buses in the Philippines demonstrate this horror vacui, as people will occupy any space available even if standing.
