WRITING AN OPINION ESSAY

When you need to write an opinion essay, you should follow a clear a structure and the
right connectors to link your ideas. Here is an example of a simple and clear structure
you could follow as well as some examples of connectors:
Paragraph 1: Your introduction. Here you should write whether you agree or disagree
with the statement.
To give your opinion you can use: Personally, I think that..., In my opinion... , In my
view, ... , From my point of view...
Paragraph 2: Here you should give your first reason to explain why you agree or
disagree.
You can start the paragraph with Firstly, or First of all, In this paragraph you can also
add a related reason using Besides, What is more or Moreover,
Paragraph 3: Here you should give your second reason to explain why you agree or
disagree.
A good way to start this paragraph is using Secondly,
Paragraph 4:The conclusion: In this last paragraph you should include a summary of
your essay.
You can start your conclusion with: To sum up, To conclude, or In conclusion.

And here is an example on an opinion essay:

Top sports people earn too much money nowadays. Do you agree or disagree with
this statement? Write an essay giving your opinion.

Read the essay and fill in the gaps with the correct connector or expression from this
list:

In most countries today top sports people, (1) ________footballers, tennis players and
basketball players, get enormous salaries. What they earn in a week is often more than
