SHORT STRUCTURED QUESTIONS ON GASTRO INTESTINAL TRACT.
1. Describe the layers of the gastro intestinal tract.(5marks)
Solution.
The wall of the git is composed of four(4) layers. They include;
Mucosa.
This the innermost layer of the GIT and it is composed of 3 layers ie the epihelium
which is first sub layer of the mucosa that lines the lumen of GIT and plays an
important role in absorption of nutrients, the lamina propria which is a layer of
connective tissue that contains blood vessels, lympatic vessels and immune cells, the
muscularis mucosae which is a thin layer of smooth muscle that support the
epithelium.
Submucosa.
This is a layer of connective tissue that contains blood vessels, lympatics and nerve
fibres. It contains glands that mucus and enzymes that help in digestion.
Muscularis externa.
It is a muscle of smooth muscles that moves food along the GIT. It is composed of 2
layers of muscles ie the circular and longitudinal muscles for peristaltic movenment of
food along the GIT.
Serosa.
This is the most outer most layer of the GIT. It contains connective tissue and is
responsible for nchoring the organs if git in place. The serosa is replaced by the
adventitia, which is a layer of connective tissue that provides structural support but
does not secrete a lubricating fluid like the serosa.
