FOUNDATIONS OF ART

INTRODUCTION

 We encounter art everyday


 We sense it, we see it, we hear it
 Example :
 choosing the style of dress to wear
 hear it through songs
 Art is an integral part of us
 Art stimulates valuable aesthetic emotions in us
 But sometimes we overlook because we are contented with the basic ways of comprehension and appreciation
of arts
 As we venture into art appreciation, we will arrive at a mature level of seeing and appreciating the arts

ART APPRECIATION VIS A VIS ART HISTORY


Art Appreciation
 Art appreciation as a course explores various forms of art and its cultural connection to students.
 Contains an in-depth lesson of foundations, media, and systems utilized in innovative process of creating
artwork.
 Leads to a better understanding of artwork
 Focuses on describing , analyzing the context , and meaning of a particular art
 The context of an artwork are the information that environs a particular artwork which helps the viewers
comprehend the works meaning , this may be a historical event. religious activities, real life situations or other
environmental information.

ART HISTORY
 to be able to fully appreciate art its history is essential
 art history or art historiography mostly focused on historical study of visual arts and its historic development

WHAT IS ART
ART
 product of man’s inventiveness and creativity
 man transforms and take inspiration from nature in creating something functional and valuable
 derived from the latin word “ars” which means ability or skills or man-made
 from the italian word “artis” which means craftsmanship, mastery, and inventiveness

ASSUMPTIONS OF ART
ART IS UNIVERSAL
➢There is art in every country, primitive communities, era, locus
➢Oldest and most important means of expression
➢No matter what era or location art exist
Art is not nature
➢ Art is made by man using his skills, craftsmanship, creativity, and imagination
➢ Man may consider nature as inspiration to create art
➢ Art is a representation of what we see, feel, etc
Nature
➢ God-made
➢ It is not made to represent or express anything
Art involves experience
➢ The perfection of art appreciation will never be possible without experiencing art
➢ One cannot say that Van Gohs “Starry Night” is breathtaking unless he saw and experience it by himself
➢ One cannot experience art by hearsay alone

Two Characteristics of experience


1.Experience of art is subjective
➢ Highly personal and individual
➢ Not everybody will agree with our own judgement and experience with art
2. Art experience is accompanied by emotional response
