Keletso has beer a truck driver for a multinational company for the past 10 years. He has |
recently retired and has started a road public transport business, Keletso Tours, operating a bus
service between Gaborone and Francistown. He used his retirement package and his personal
savings as start-up capital.
After a year of operation, the business started experiencing some problems. There was
increased competition from other bus businesses and from rail transport. There was some
pressure from the community, concerning the recent rise in transport fares and pollution.
He therefore decided to approach the Local Enterprise Authority's (LEA) office in Gaborone for
business advice, in order to avoid failure. LEA advised him on good record keeping, financial
discipline, good customer care, social responsibilities and to conduct a SWOT analysis.

a ~ JOSA MOTORS
“Bhn ana“SarSli'were sole proprietors. ‘They:specialised in- repairing Géryian -and..Japanese..
\ehisles in Francistown, Due to challenges of sole proprietorship, in 2008 they formed a
partnership business called Josa Motors, specialising in repairing Japanese vehicles only.
‘Though they had savings, they decided to apply to the Youth Development Fund which was
readily available to all youth in Botswana. The fund also offered them a 50 percent grant
therefore they only had to pay back 50 percent of the amount granted.
‘They were asked to submit all the necessary legal and financial documents including a business
lan for assessment, In order to prepare @ business plan, they had to do market research and
environmental impact analysis, so John and Sarah hired @ consultant to conduct the market
esearch and the environmental impact analysis. The reports of the research and the
environmental impact analysis were submitted and funding was approved.
Based on the market research report, the business deciced to buy its spare parts and computer-
riven machines from Japan through a forwarding agent. Josa Motors paid suppliers by electronic
transfer and direct payment. The suppliers advised Josa Motors to use only one method of
payment. Josa Motors operated successfully for the first five years due to intensive advertising
and good customer service. In the 2014 budget speech, the government announced increased
customs duty on imported vehicles and car parts. Josa Motors was affected by the government
policy which led to a deciine in sales and working capital. The statement of financial position thus
{ar revealed a fall in working capital.
‘The business is currently facing new challenges and John and Sarah approached a consultant
who advised them to admit a new partner and also look for new sources of supply for the car
parts.
1 (a) Explain one way in which Josa Motors would use the capital from the Youth Development
Fund.
