This document provides instructions for crocheting an anatomical human heart using red yarn. It includes materials needed and abbreviations. The main body of the heart is made in a spiral consisting of increasing stitches to form the shape. Separate pieces are made for the superior and inferior vena cava, aorta, pulmonary artery branching into two veins, and optional small backstitched veins. All pieces are stuffed except for some veins and arteries. The pieces are then sewn together in the correct anatomical positions to form the completed heart.

Crochet Anatomical Human Heart

by Kyla Raaymakers

I usually use a 3.5mm hook for worsted weight and aran yarns.

• Polyfill stuffing

Abbreviations (US terms):

Sc - Single crochet

➔ Stuff the heart
29. (Sc2tog, Sc 1) 6x (12)
30. (Sc2tog) 6x - (6)
➔ Add some more stuffing, weave the tail in remaining stitches and cinch shut.

Superior vena cava:

Leaving a long tail (~10 inches) for sewing before making the slip knot, chain 12. Join in the
round.
1-4. Sc around (12)
5. (Sc2tog in back loops) 6x (6)
➔ Bind off, weave the tail in remaining stitches and cinch shut.

1. Rejoin yarn with a slip stitch in the first unworked front loop from round 5. Sc in each front
loop around. (12)
2. Sc around (12)
➔ Bind off and weave in tail. Stuff.

Inferior vena cava:

Leaving a long tail for sewing, chain 12 and join in the round.
1-2. Sc around (12)
➔ Bind off and weave in tail.

2
Aorta:

Leaving a long tail for sewing, chain 10 and join in the round.
1-7. Sc around (10)
(Note: Make slip stitches loose so they are easier to work into)
8. Sc 5, Sl st 5 (10)
9. Sc 6, Sl st 4 (10)
10. Sl st, Sc 5, Sl st 4 (10)
11. Sl st, Sc 6, Sl st 3 (10)
12. Sl st 2, Sc 5, Sl st 3 (10)

15. Sl st 3, Sc 7 (10)
16-19. Sc around (10)
➔ lightly stuff
20. (Sc2tog in back loops) 5x (5)
➔ Bind off, weave the tail in remaining stitches
and cinch shut.

1. Rejoin yarn with a slip stitch in the first

unworked front loop from round 20. Sc in each
front loop around. (10)
2. Sc around (10)
➔ Bind off and weave in tail.

Branches of the aorta:

(Make 3)
Leaving a long tail for sewing, chain 6 and join in the round.
1-4. Sc in each st around for 4 rounds (6)
➔ Bind off and weave in tail. Sew along the top of the aorta- use the photo above as a reference
for placement.

Pulmonary artery:

Leaving a long tail for sewing, chain 10 and join in the round.
1-3. Sc around (10)

➔ Artery is now branching off into 2.

Branch 1:
1. Chain 3. Skip 5 stitches, Sl st to join in the next stitch (this slip stitch counts as first stitch in
the new round), Sl st into an additional 4 Sc from previous round, Sc once in the back loop of
each of the chains (8 - 5 Sl st and 3 Sc)
2. Sl st 5, Sc 3 (8)
3-4. Sc around (8)
5. (Sc2tog in back loops) 4x (4)
➔ Bind off, weave the tail in remaining stitches and cinch shut.

3
1. Rejoin yarn with a slip stitch in first unworked front loop from round 5. Sc in each front loop
around. (8)
2. Sc around (8)
➔ Bind off and weave in tail.

Branch 2:
Join yarn in the first of the 5 Sc previously skipped.
1. Sl st in the 5 Sc from previous round, Sc once in each of the chains (8 - 5 Sl st and 3 Sc)
2. Sl st 5, Sc 3 (8)
3-4. Sc around (8)
5. (Sc2tog in back loops) 4x (4)
➔ Bind off, weave the tail in remaining stitches and cinch shut.

1. Rejoin yarn with a slip stitch in first unworked front loop from round 5. Sc in each front loop
around. (8)
2. Sc around (8)
➔ Bind off and weave in tail. Stuff both branches and the base.

Pulmonary veins:

(Make 4)
Leaving a long tail for sewing, chain 8 and join in the round.
1-4. Sc around (8)
➔ Bind off and weave in tail.

Assembly:

Note that every piece is stuffed with the exception of the inferior vena cava, pulmonary veins
and branches of the aorta. Sew veins and arteries onto the heart using the photos and
instructions below as reference for placement.

• Start by sewing the superior vena cava (SVC) and the pulmonary artery along the top of the
heart as shown below. The SVC is sewn between rounds 4 and 8 of the heart. The pulmonary
artery is sewn between rounds 10 and 14.
• Sew the aorta between but slightly in front of the SVC and pulmonary artery, between rounds
7 and 11 of the heart.

• Using a scrap length of yarn, sew the aorta against the top of the pulmonary artery where the
grey line is in the photo on the following page.

5
• Sew the inferior vena cava in line with the superior vena cava on the back of the heart,
between rounds 9 and 14 of the heart.
• Flatten the bottom of the pulmonary veins to sew on the back of the heart as shown in the
photo below.

6
• Optional: With burgundy yarn, backstitch small veins along the surface of the heart. When
doing so, try not to pick up any stuffing with the stitches as it is easily pulled along with the
yarn. It helps to keep the needle parallel to fabric, just between it and the stuffing.
