Exercise 4

The document analyzes the rhythm and pacing of a scene from a play between characters Zack and Abby. It notes that the pacing varies from normal to quicker as the characters argue and tensions rise, particularly when discussing Abby's history with Charlie. As the argument intensifies, the characters speak more quickly until Abby yells at Zack. The pacing then returns to normal as Zack feels guilty. The scene ends with an awkward pause as Abby delivers her final line quickly. It also divides the scene into four units based on topics of conversation, identifying the climactic moment in each unit.

Exercise 4: Rhythm
1. In terms of rhythm, I see this scene with a lot of variation in pace and tempo due to the
back and forth that goes on between Zack and Abby throughout the scene. The scene
starts out at a normal pace until Abby comes out wearing the “Charlie shirt”. In trying to
avoid talking about Charlie, Abby begins to speak at a quicker tempo than normal
triggering telescoping between Zack and Abby when Zack mentions she wore the shirt
the last time they saw Charlie. When Abby admits defeat, she speaks at a slower/normal
tempo. Zack uses pauses to tread lightly when talking to Abby until he calls the shirt the
“Charlie shirt” which triggers more telescoping between the two until Abby yells “Fuck
you!” as she changes out of the shirt. The pace of the scene returns to normal, Zack
speaking at a slower/normal tempo as he feels guilty for making Abby change. He uses
pauses to show remorse. Abby tells Zack that Charlie made her insecure but Zack
shouldn’t be insecure. There are a series of pauses at the end of the scene marking the
falling action of the scene climax as Zack is defeated. To avoid the awkwardness, Abby
delivers her last line at a quick tempo.

2. Unit 1: D-A-T-E
Abby catches Zack rummaging through the drawer, Zack lies about what he was looking
for and closes the drawer.

Unit 2: The Shirt

Zack taunts Abby about Charlie, Abby changes her shirt.

Unit 3: Retreat!
Zack tries to be sweet to Abby, Abby rejects.

Unit 4: Time to Go
Abby reprimands Zack, Zack stops talking about Charlie.

3. Unit 1: D-A-T-E
Unit Climax: “What are you looking for?”

Unit 2: The Shirt

Unit Climax: “Fuck you!”

Unit 3: Retreat!
Unit Climax: “Stop saying ‘hey.’”

Unit 4: Time to Go
Unit/Scene Climax: “I shouldn't have to explain that to you, because I'm entitled to some
privacy and it has absolutely no bearing on our marriage.
