Eris was not invited to the wedding of king Peleus and Thetis, she
gatecrashed the wedding, throwing a golden apple which Aphrodite,
Hera, and Pallas Athena wanted. Zeus was asked to judge but he
refused and told them to go to Paris. They made him choose which
one of them was the fairest, they bribed him. Paris being lustful chose
Aphrodite who offered him the fairest woman on Earth.
King Priam sent Hector and Paris to Sparta to promote peace. They
promised to never harm each other but Paris broke the sacred bond.
When Menelaus came back from Crete, Helen was gone. He went to
Agamemnon and asked him to defeat the Trojans
Two great Achaean commanders were nowhere to be found.
Odysseus pretended he was insane because he didn't want to fight
because of an unfaithful woman while Achilles was sent by his mother
to the court of Lycomedes. In the end, the two still joined the battle. A
thousand ships were launched and they met at Aulis. There they
sacrificed Iphigenia to continue to sail to Troy. There was an oracle
that said that the first one to land would be the first one to die.
Protesilaus was the first one to land and die.
For 9 years, victory wavered but because Agamemnon took Briseis,
the war prize of Achilles, Achilles refused to fight and without him, it
was hard for the Acheans.
Menelaus challenged Paris to a duel. Paris agreed but he can only
fight by throwing his spear. Paris was about to be killed but Aphrodite
intervened so his life was spared. Agamemnon declared that
Menelaus won and the Trojans should give Helen back. While the
gods were discussing what to do, Athena possessed Pandarus,
shooting an arrow at Menelaus. The battle was on again, during this
battle Aphrodite failed to save Aeneas but he was not killed, Apollo
carried him to Pergamos where Artemis healed him.
Diomedes came face to face with Hector but there he saw Ares. Hera
and Athena were helping Diomedes, he rushed to Ares and hurled his
spear with the help of Athena.
Zeus remembered his promise to Thetis, he ordered all the other
immortals to stay in Olympus. The battle ended and the Trojans had
driven the Greeks back to their ships. Nestor said that if he hadn’t
angered Achilles they wouldn’t have been defeated. Agamemnon
confessed that he acted like a fool. Odysseus and 2 chieftains tried
to convince Achilles to join the battle but he refused.
Hera tried to seduce Zeus and while Zeus was distracted, Ajax hurled
Hector to the ground and the Greeks drove the Trojans away. Apollo
revived Hector and gave him power, the Greeks were frightened and
the Trojans were near to setting the ships on fire.
Patroclus saw the chaos and told Achilles to join the battle but he
refused again. Patroclus asked him to give him his armor so that the
Trojans would be afraid. The trojans were frightened when they saw
“Achilles”. Patroclus did his best and at last, he met Hector. Hector
thought he killed Achilles, only realizing it was Patroclus when he took
the armor off.
The death of Patroclus was the reason Achilles fought again. Thetis
commissioned Hephaestus to forge him an armor.
Hector was told to save himself but he refused, he still fought
knowing that Achilles was with Athena while Apollo already left him.
Athena appeared beside Hector in disguise as his brother,
Deiphobus. It was too late when he realized that Athena had tricked
him. Achilles drove the spear at the opening near Hector’s throat
then he stripped the armor from the corpse and dragged Hector’s
body around the walls of Troy.
Zeus was displeased, he sent Iris to Priam and ordered him to redeem
Hector’s body. Priam went to the Greek camp and he was
accompanied by Hermes. He knelt and kissed the hands of Achilles.
Achilles felt guilty, ordering his men to wash and anoint Hector’s
body and then cover it with a robe.
Paris killed Achilles by shooting an arrow at him, Apollo guided it so
that it struck his heel. He was burned and his ashes were placed in
the same urn that held the ashes of Patroclus
Ajax and Odysseus wanted the armor of Achilles, they let the kings
decide and they gave it to Odysseus. Ajax was mad, determined to
kill Menelaus and Agamemnon. Athena struck Ajax with madness. He
thought that the flocks and herds of the Greeks were the army so he
killed them. When he regained his reason, he felt disgraced and
decided to kill himself.
Prophet Helenus told the Greeks that Troy would only fall if they fight
them with the bow and arrows of Heracles which is currently in the
hands of Prince Philoctetes. They sent Odysseus to get the weapons
by tricking Philoctetes. They were able to take the bow and arrows,
they also took Philoctetes with them. Paris was shot by Philoctetes, he
was carried to Mt. Ida and there he begged Oenone to heal him but
she refused.
Troy didn’t fall because Paris was dead. The Greeks decided to steal
the Palladium. Diomedes climbed the walls and found the Palladium
then he took it to the camp.
The Greeks found a way to enter the city, it was by hiding the
chieftains inside a big wooden horse and placing it in front of the
gate. The Trojans thought that the Achaeans left, they gathered
around the horse and tried to figure out what to do.
Sinon, a Greek who had been left behind, told them that the
Achaeans left because the gods had punished them. The horse was
an offering to Athena and they made it huge so that the Trojans
wouldn't take it into the city and would destroy it. Many believed him
but the priest Laocoon said that they should destroy the horse.
Laocoon was killed by 2 serpents, people thought that he was
punished so they decided to bring the horse into the city. In the
middle of the night, the chieftains attacked and the Trojans woke up
when Troy was burning. King Priam was killed by Neoptolemus, all the
leaders were dead except Aeneas. He escaped and saved his family,
Aphrodite was the only god that day who helped a Trojan. Aphrodite
also helped Helen and brought her back to Menelaus. When morning
came, there were only women left. Andromache still had Astyanax in
her arms but she had no choice but to let them throw him. The death
of Astyanax was the last sacrifice of Troy.
