Module in LS6 – Digital Citizenship
First Quarter

What I Need
1 to Know

This module in LS6 – Digital Literacy is intended for the Alternative Learning
System Junior High School like you for you to study and have fun. This module
focuses on the different types of computer and their applications in daily life. As you
go over the module, you will see the following elements that will lead you in
understanding the concept:

What’s In? – This gives you a review of the past lesson that connects you to the
current lesson.

What’s New? – This is an activity that introduces the new lesson; and

What’s in It? – This is the discussion part of the lesson that presents the concept for
deeper understanding.

But, there’s a lot more as you read it, you will discover the different types of
computer and their applications in daily life.

Learning Objectives
At the end of the module, you should be able to:

● Identify the different types of computer and their applications in daily life.
Hope you will have a wonderful experience learning this module. So, get
ready, have a deep breath and start your day answering this module wearing a big
smile.

What I Know
2
Let us determine how much you already know about the different types of
computer and their applications in daily life.

Direction: Identify if what type of computer (minicomputer, microcomputer,

supercomputer, mainframe computer) is being described in the
statement
below.

____________1. It has limited peripherals attached to them.

____________2. It offers limited range of peripherals.
____________3. It is installed in large commercial places or government
organization.
____________4. It is used for weather forecasting, animations, graphics etc.
____________5. It is also known as personal computers.
____________6. It is cheap and user-friendly computer.
____________7. It is a type of computer that is huge and installed in space centers,
nuclear power, stations etc.
____________8. Only scientists and mathematicians can operate this type of
computer.
____________9. They are big computer systems that is sensitive to temperature,
humidity, dust etc.
____________10. It has a wide range of peripherals attached.
____________11. It is used for data processing.
____________12. It is not very sensitive to the external environment and hence are
more
generalized.
____________13. It is a type of computer which main components are monitor,
CPU,
keyboard, mouse, speakers, modem and printer.
____________14. It is not a user-friendly type of computer that can use wide variety
of
software.
____________15. It has huge memories and tremendous processing speed.

Hello there, how was your first task? If you got all the answers correctly, you
are advised to skip this module. However, why not give yourself the opportunity to
learn more as you go over the module?

On the other hand, if you failed in this test, it’s not yet the end. Cheer up! This
module will help you understand the lesson better!

Keep smiling as you turn to the next page to begin the lesson.

What’s In?
3

Let us check if you still remember the things that we have discussed during
the previous session. It will surely connect you to our topic today.

Direction: Below are the characteristics of a computer. Rearrange the jumbled

letters to
form the word.

What’s New?
4
Before we start the lesson, let’s have a tune-up activity by accomplishing the
activity below.

Direction: Arrange the jumbled letter below the picture to form the name of the
given images.

Were you able to arrange the jumbled letters correctly? If so, that’s fantastic!
Now, turn to the next page for you to learn them better.

What is it?
5
The arranged letters from the activity are the types of computer to be
discussed in this module. Smile, and let’s begin the lesson.

Classification of Computers
Computer is an electronic device to perform mathematical and logical
calculations. Computers can be classified in various ways depending upon its size,
memory capacity, processing speed etc. Computers are classified into four
categories;

1.Supercomputer
2. Mainframe computer
3. Minicomputer
4. Microcomputer

Supercomputer

Supercomputers are computers that performs at or near the currently highest

https://www.google.com/search?q=supercomputer+picture&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwip3635yPTqAhX7xosBHXPdBPAQ2-cCegQIABAA#imgrc=CG-BUXbx8nQMuM

operational rate for computers. Traditionally, supercomputers have been used for
scientific and engineering applications that must handle very large databases or do a
great amount of computation. They are very expensive, very fast, and the most
powerful computers we have in the world. These computers are very large in size
due to the numerous parts and components involves in their design.

● They are huge computers installed in space centers, nuclear power,

station etc.
● They are used for performing complex mathematical calculations.

● Only scientists and mathematicians can operate them.

● They are having huge memories and tremendous processing speed.

● They are used for weather forecasting, animation graphics etc.

Mainframe Computer
6
https://www.google.com/search?q=mainframe+computer+picture&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwjMpM2gyfTqAhVB6pQKHd24Aj0Q2-

cCegQIABAA&oq=mainframe+computer+picture&gs_lcp=CgNpbWcQDFDevwVYmoIGYImXBmgAcAB4AIABghmIAcpRkgEDOS00mAEAoAEBqgELZ3dzLXdpei1pbWfAAQE&sclient=im

These are large and expensive computer types capable of supporting

hundreds or even thousands, of user simultaneously. Thus, they are mostly used by
governments and large organizations transaction processing, census, industry, and
consumer statistics among others. They are ranked below supercomputers.
● They are big computer systems sensitive to temperature, humidity,
dust etc.
● Qualified and trained operators are required to operate them.

● They have large storage capacity.

● They have wide range of peripherals attached.

● They can use wide variety of software.

● They are not user friendly.

● They can be used for more mathematical calculations.

● They are installed in large commercial places or government

organization.

Minicomputer

https://www.google.com/search?q=minicomputer+picture&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwjf-OeGzPTqAhVOAKYKHeyyCs8Q2-cCegQIABAA&oq=minicomputer+picture&gs_lcp=CgNpbWcQARgAMgIIADICCABQ-

Minicomputers are mid-sized computers. In terms of size and power,

minicomputers are ranked below mainframes. A minicomputer is a multiprocessing

system capable of supporting from 4 to about 200 users simultaneously.

7
● They have lens memory and storage capacity than mainframe
computers.
● They are offer limited range of peripherals.

● Limited range of software’s can be used.

● The end users can directly operate it.

● They are not very sensitive to the external environment and hence are
more generalized.
● They are used for data processing.

Microcomputer

Microcomputers or personal computers are designed to use by one user at a

time. The term microcomputer relates to the microprocessor which is used with a
personal computer for the purpose of processing data and instruction codes. These
are the most common computer types since they are not very expensive.

● They bought revolution in the history of computers.

● They are also known as personal computers.

● They are cheap and user friendly.

● The main components are monitor, CPU, keyboard, mouse, speakers,

mode, and printer.
● They are having limited peripherals, attached to them.

● These types of computers can use wide range of software’s.

● They are used as desktops either in offices or even homes.

● They operation can be easily learnt.

● Playing games and watching movies.

● Most popular micro computer’s processing chip manufacturing

company is intel.

We’re done! The different types of computer may be simple and basic to you
but don’t forget their significance to our daily life.
What’s More?
