BRIEF SUMMARY
Madrasat al-Firdaws is a religious complex from the Ayyubid era. The main building centralized by a courtyard surrounded by a prayer
hall at south and eastern and western halls which each fronted by a domed portico and the northern side of the courtyard occupied by
a large iwan. The east and west rooms of the prayer hall are mausoleums. The student room are located at the north with external
Iwan. The complex has been erected by massive stone and brickwork and impressive stone decorations.
The complex has suffered severe damage: the facade and two domes of the eastern hall, the minaret is destroyed, and two
symmetrical wings at north of the complex have been neglected. At the beginning of the conflict in Aleppo the beautiful and unique
prayer niche was protected by a temporary wall that was built in front of the niche and has been removed recently.
An emergency structural stabilization of the exterior façade and domes of the eastern hall are strictly recommended.
The complex was the first of its type in Syria and represents sophisticated architecture and decoration work

RECOMMENDATIONS
Urgent intervention Safeguarding measures: emergency structural stabilization of the eastern hall facade and domes.

Further recommended Rebuilding of the damaged facade and domes. Any repairs or rebuilding should be carried out largely with
intervention original materials and according to historically transmitted procedures and techniques.
General advice: It is essential to protect and store the rubble on site regarding the minaret for the
rebuilding!
Building documentation. All-round systematic photographic documentation (stadia, photogrammetric,
3D…) of the building, the damaged sections including the rubble (see separate guideline documentation).
Rubble management: keep, safe and store the rubble on site (see guideline below)

‫بني المجمع بحجارة ضخمة مع استخدام للقرميد والحجارة المزخرفة‪ .‬تعرض مجمع الفردوس ألضرار جسيمة في منطقتين من القاعة الشرقية الجدار الخارجي‬

Rubble Management (General guidelines)

Securing the collapsed building material is a high priority!

Building rubble should not be removed from the site until a qualified salvage and
deposit concept is in place.

Schedule (responsibility > conservator / archaeologist/engineer / architect or similar):

1. At the beginning of the work, a complete photographic documentation of the
entirety of the debris/rubble must be executed urgently (including from above).
2. All natural stones (ashlar, carved, sculptured) as well as any building decoration
should be selected, classified and finally assigned to areas of the façade where
they belong to. Single stones should be systematically signed and all sides should
be photographed.

The rubble on site should be classified into the following categories:

A. All types of building decoration as well as remains, fragments of particular

importance / value / expressiveness, such as ashlar, ornamented stones,
inscriptions, wall paintings, mosaics, tiles, carved wood/metal etc.
B. Remains, fragments of other cultural-historical/architectural significance, such
as carved or shaped masonry, decorative plaster, stucco, bricks, tiles, metal,
etc..
C. Remains, fragments of minor importance, such as modern building materials.
