A. Art History and Criticism: Central and Eastern Visayas
INTRODUCTION:
The Arts has been present since the beginning of civilization as it is an
essential means for man to live and communicate with others. It has been
used to enhance man’s life and surroundings, to express his thoughts,
dreams, and spiritual beliefs, and to share his own and his community’s
aspirations, celebrations, and events. Arts records, reflects, and rearranges
man’s life and existence (DepEd Curriculum Guide, 2016 p.3).
Grade 7 Arts focuses on the folk arts and crafts of the Philippines. We will
delve deeper in the different folk art and crafts found in Luzon, Visayas,
and Mindanao. As we move forward in this subject, you will see that the
Philippines has a rich culture. For this quarter, we will start exploring the
folk arts and crafts of Luzon. From the highlands of Cordillera to the
beautiful land of Batanes. For every art topic, we will focus on four different
art discipline; Art History, Art Criticism, Art Production, and Aesthetics. All
of these will be substantial to better understand every art topic.
Lesson 1: Folk Arts and Crafts of
Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon,
and Palawan

If you are an artist, you have to create something from scratch, from your
own imagination. From early Filipinos to the current time, Filipinos had
been exhibiting their intelligence and creativity in the field of arts and crafts.
I. OBJECTIVES
MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCIES (MELCs)

 Identifies the characteristics of arts and crafts in specific areas in


MIMAROPA and the Visayas, Marinduque (Moriones masks),
Palawan (Manunggul Jar), Mindoro (Hanunuo-Mangyan writing,
basketry, and weaving), Bohol (churches), Cebu (furniture), Iloilo
(culinary arts and old houses), Samar (Basey mats), etc.
 Appreciates the artifacts and art objects in terms of its utilization and
its distinct use of art elements and principles
 Reflects on and derive the mood, idea or message emanating from
selected artifacts and art objects
 Creates crafts that can be locally assembled with local materials,
guided by local traditional techniques
 Discusses elements from traditions/history of a community for one’s
artwork

and representations of their own local’s attire, fabrics, body ornamentation,
accessories, architecture, and sculptures, you will get to deeply understand
the significance of folk arts in reliving the Filipino identity.

EXPLAIN
MIMAROPA
The island provinces of Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro, and Occidental
Mindoro are known for their art of basketry and mat weaving.
In Marinduque, the art of making mats using raffias and buri is a popular
livelihood in the communities. Marinduque is also known for the Moriones
festival every Lenten season.
Romblon is not only known for its marble crafts but
also for their sense of artistry in making woven
mats and plants.
Palawan is internationally known as the “Final
Frontier” of the country. It is also famous for the
Puerto Prinsesa Undeground River. It is also known
for its largest marine habitat, the Tubbataha Reef.
The place has very rare flora and fauna.

The Manunggul Jar is considered as one of the


most treasured artifacts in Philippine history.
Manunggul jar is also
known in the old design
of the one-thousand-
peso bill.

Tagbanua’s attire came from the bark of trees known as salugin. The early
men in this tribe wore loincloth with ambalad, a rattan waistband.
Bayong-bayong – the rice baskets of the Tagbanua in Central Palawan with
various unusual shapes.
