PART I: CVs
BASIC RULES & TIPS

- Target your CV! Are you addressing a traditional firm, a start-up or a high-tech company?
Investigate the culture of the company and adapt your style to it (see CV layouts). Target your
CV to each position applied for – it should not be a list of everything that you have done.

- Be concise! Recruiters spend an average of 30 to 60 seconds on a CV. Keep it short (one

page is the best. If you need 2 pages, do not print on both sides: number and staple your pages
instead).

- Explain everything! You have to describe what you have learned and what skills you have
acquired during your degree. What is it about your Master's Degree in Marketing that makes
you the ideal candidate for the job? Remember that a CV in English is telling a story: USE
VERBS instead of nouns.

- Be result-oriented! Provide quantitative examples that include figures to portray a clear

picture of your achievements (e.g.: Collected 10k €, Managed a $350,000 budget, Trained
and supervised 18 members of staff)

- Be specific! Vague statements have very little impact, specifics usually strike a responsive
chord (e.g.: Have practiced horse riding for 10 years; ranked 31st at the Paris Prix du Grand
Palais international jumping competition in 2017)

- Work on the layout, fonts and styling! The style of your CV speaks to who you are, just as
your clothing and personal style can signal character traits to your would-be employers during
an interview.. It is also a clever way of demonstrating some of your office skills. Find a font
that will be original yet easy to read (Calibri, Cambria instead of Times New Roman).

- Weed out mistakes! Typos and spelling mistakes will quickly make you seem careless and
unsuitable for the job. Use resources such as your computer spellchecker, then ask your
teacher(s) to proofread your CV for you. Make sure you have done as much work as possible
before asking for corrections: it will be easier to focus on the contents if you have already
polished the form.

When it comes to writing the actual descriptions, here are some Dos and Don’ts
• omit the personal pronoun
• use a dynamic 'action verb' in the simple past tense (e.g., demonstrated)
See list of action verbs below

• DO NOT make lists with nouns

• Only mention the jobs and tasks that will be relevant for the position
However, at the beginning of your career you should probably include everything you've done.
Anyway, the question is not so much what you choose to include, but how you include it. Always
emphasize the skills you've learned.

6
4. ADDITIONAL SKILLS

Languages: you should start with your native language, then English, then your other languages in
descending order of mastery.
• fluent
• proficient
• advanced
• intermediate
• working knowledge • good knowledge
• basic knowledge
• beginner

Certification scores
If you have taken the TOEIC, TOEFL, or another internationally recognized test, give your score in
parentheses after the language, including the month and year you took it. And don’t forget to include
what the score is out of (e.g.: TOEIC Listening and Reading 989/990)
European Framework (A2 to C2) for Europe only

Computer skills: include software that other candidates may not be able to offer, especially technical
software such as Chemcad, or more unusual office stuff such as HTML or Photoshop. You may add an
indication of your level of proficiency and / or a context in which you have used this particular skill.

5. INTERESTS AND ACTIVITIES

This section can draw attention to your personality and soft skills. Here again, for each activity you
choose to mention, make a clear link with the skills you have developed (leadership, team spirit,
organisation skills). It’s the latest trend! (see templates)

TEMPLATES AND SAMPLES

The Guardian’s CV Template for Graduates and First Jobbers:
https://www.theguardian.com/careers/cv-templates
Header, document and CV title:
Your first and family name to appear at the top of each page — not "CV"
CV template rules: Maximum length is two pages; do use an internet friendly font such as Arial or
Times New Roman and don’t use heavy graphics, tables, images or complex formatting that may
corrupt when your CV is emailed. It would be better to include a link to a webpage or share a file.

Profile:
A statement of about 30 to 40 words that describe your work skills, such as highly organised, ability to
work in a team or alone, motivated by a challenge. Don’t just list your own personal ambitions here,
employers want to hire people that will contribute and add value to organisations — so, what are you
going to do for them?

Qualification description:
List the institution that you studied at, the start and finish date, subject, type of qualification and the
grade.
Institution, 00/00/0000 — 00/00/0000, course, qualification, grade
If you specialised at any point or did a paper or project that is relevant to the type of job that you
would like to do, write about it here, but use no more than 40 words. Help your prospective employer

8
by avoiding jargon, explaining any new ways of being graded and talking up the benefits of what you
have studied. Remember anyone can learn the theory, you need to demonstrate that you can apply it
and that it’s useful. If you are a recent post-graduate, also list your AS level qualifications, including
where and when you studied for them, the subject and the grade. If you are a mature, recently-
qualified FE student, list your highest qualification (in the same way as above) only.

For example: Researched, planned and authored 12,000-word dissertation on new trends in
information sharing via social networks — managed deadlines, liaised with dissertation co- ordinator
and developed analytical and research skills by successfully interviewing 10 experts for advice and
opinion to inform paper. Findings to be published on online news site Mashable.

Work history:
Great if you have one; list your most recent jobs first, picking out the skills that you used and expertise
that you developed that’s relevant to the type of work you are interested in doing. Detail the
organisation that you worked for, the start and finish dates and your job title. If you are nervous about
naming the company that you work for, describe it instead (for example; major multiple/supermarket
chain instead of Tesco or Sainsbury’s). Don’t describe role and responsibilities, instead talk about your
achievements and contributions to the business. It’s not what you did but how you did it that counts.
Organisation,
00/00/0000 — 00/00/0000, job title
For example: Helped devise a project to improve customer engagement which resulted in 30% more
customer enquiries. This in turn led to a 20% increase in revenue.

Interest and hobbies:

List your interests and hobbies here. If you have an interest that is more of a passion for you, where
your talent has been recognised or awarded, describe it in greater detail here — up to 40 words. Again,
be mindful that it’s not just what you did, but how you did it that will impress a prospective employer.
Consider the interchange between life/work skills here also.

Awards and membership of professional bodies:

Don’t hide your talents under a bushel here, if you got 100% in your cycling proficiency or grade 6 on
the piano, for example, list your achievements. Again, detail the awarding body, the date and the
grade, and describe what the award represents.

References:
Use the name, job title and contact details of a course leader, mentor or professor at your university, or
an employer here.

Contact details:
List your email, mobile number and home address (if relevant) at the bottom of every CV page and be
mindful of the differences between work and play. Don’t use a jokey email, such as
bestlooker@email.com, if this could be seen as immature or foolish. Also consider what you publish
online, employers do check social media, even for senior roles — so expect to be Googled...

skills! Do not overdo it though.
• Soft Skills. Definitely very trendy. Remain sensible – the example above might
be somewhat over the top: it depends on the targeted field’s job culture

TEMPLATES
Dear Mr Black,

Please find enclosed my CV in application for the post advertised in the Guardian on
30 November.

The nature of my degree course has prepared me for this position. It involved a great
deal of independent research, requiring initiative, self-motivation and a wide range of
skills. For one course, [insert course], an understanding of the [insert sector] industry
was essential. I found this subject very stimulating.

I am a fast and accurate writer, with a keen eye for detail and I should be very grateful
for the opportunity to progress to market reporting. I am able to take on the
responsibility of this position immediately, and have the enthusiasm and determination
to ensure that I make a success of it.

20
Thank you for taking the time to consider this application and I look forward to
hearing from you in the near future.

Yours sincerely

PART 3 - ELEVATOR PITCH
An elevator pitch is a short explanation of who you are and what you do. It encompasses
the most important things you could say to someone if you were only going to share a brief
elevator ride with them. It’s also the way you would respond if someone said, “tell me about
yourself.” Having a polished elevator speech is essential for networking as well as
interviewing.
Key Points: • Keep it brief – 30 seconds to 2 minutes at the most (for our purposes – 60
seconds max.) • Make sure it is tailored to the situation and audience • Different versions for
casual networking vs. job interviews
Main Elements: Following are the important elements to incorporate, with some sample
dialogue for each one.

1. Discussion of your strengths & talents

a) “I am a natural salesman with an incredible amount of business savvy.”
b) “I’ve been passionate about design ever since I was a little kid. I love that I’m now
able to help my clients turn their vision into tangible reality.”
c) “I’m incredibly talented at analyzing markets and developing effective sales
strategies.”

d) “I work with international students, teaching courses and serving as an advisor. I love
that I get to combine my passion for teaching with hands-on support for learners who
are so dedicated and driven.”

2. Mention of current/past employment in positive light

a) “Running my own business for the past 6 years has been a wonderful challenge and
a great adventure.”

b) “I’ve learned so much about business development, sales, and marketing.”

c) “It’s been an amazing experience and has helped me to become a world-class
marketer.”
d) “Managing this team has been so rewarding. Helping my people grow and come into
their own while we all meet our collective goals is a real thrill.”
3. Forward-looking statement(s)

a) “While I do love many things about my current role, I’m looking to transition into a full-time
position in management with a progressive company here in San Diego.”

b) “As my personal goals have changed, I’m now looking for a sales leadership role with a
thriving organization in San Diego.”
c) “The company is going in a new direction and I think it’s the right time to look for my next
challenge.”

Put it all together:

1. Talk it out and write it down, then edit it to sound more like the way you talk and re-write it
2. Practice it by yourself to make adjustments and work out what you want to say

d’un secteur d’activité, la présentation de votre produit ou service, vos opportunités d’entreprendre avec un exposé du
marché visé avec les consommateurs visés, la taille du marché, les avantages concurrentiels prévus et la méthode de
