Journeying the Teaching Profession: Myself and My Career

What do I need to learn?

Objectives
1. Trace the history of career planning
2. Recognize the significance of career planning in the teaching profession
3. Discuss the importance of the Teacher Education Development Program; and the
National Competency- Based Teacher Standards in career planning
4. Formulate and share a SMART career goal

Historical perspective of career planning

The idea of career can be traced back in the beginning of the 20th century.
Comes from the French word “carriere”, means, a road or a race course, which in turn
comes from a Latin word “cararia” which refers to track for wheeled vehicles.

History of career planning 1950s to 1960s

In the Philippines, parents hope their children to become professionals regardless
of the socio- economic status, parents wanted their children to earn a degree.

1970s

The National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) was introduced in order to

distinguish those who were eligible to take a degree course from does who should
take a vocational- technical course.

1990s

Education, nursing and secretarial courses were associated with woman. When
men enrolled in these courses during this period, their sexual orientation was a bit in
question. New courses like computer science, computer technology, management
information system, computer programming and web- designing have started to gain
popularity.

Position- A group of tasks performed by an individual in an organization.

Job- A paid position held by one or more individuals requiring some related attributes
in a specific organization.

What is Career Planning?

Can be defined as choosing life‟s important paths. It is a lifelong process
which includes choosing an occupation, getting a job, growing in our job, possibly
changing careers, and eventually retiring. As a whole, career planning encompasses
establishing career objectives and determining appropriate educational and
developmental programs to enhance and enrich the knowledge, skills and attitudes
required to achieve short or long- term career objectives.

Four (4) Steps in Career Planning process

1. Self

Gather information about yourself. Interest, Values, Roles, Skills/ Aptitudes, Preferred
Environments, Developmental needs, your realities

2. Options

Explore the occupation in which you are interested. Get more specific information
after you narrow down your options.

3. Match

Identify possible occupations. Chose both a short term and a long term options.
4. Action

Develop steps you need to take in order to reach your goals (E.g., Developing a job
search strategy, writing your resume and preparing for job interviews).

Significance of Career Planning

We say that teaching is a lifetime profession and vocation. Hence, career

planning is not just making plans to obtain your “perfect” job or career, but to help
you make the many adjustments there will be along the way as you learn about you
and the world of teaching.
As you see, career planning is more than just looking at jobs and positions and
working hard. The reason most individuals do not turn their dreams into reality is
because they do not take these dreams and make them goals. A goal is a dream
with a deadline. The successful people set goals; they plan and follow the plan. Goal
setting is a process and a learned skill with many parts to it. Simple, short-term goals
may be done in your head, but more complex, long-term goals should be written,
evaluated and monitored frequently.
WEST VISAYAS STATE UNIVESITY 4
LAMBUNAO CAMPUS
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
Lambunao, Iloilo

Remember to set your goals the SMART way

Specific (well- defined and detailed)
Measurable (can evaluate progress)
Attainable (within reach)
Realistic (practical)
Time- bound (within a time frame)

Do not abandon a career goal!

A well thought out goal can anticipate barriers that would stop you. Barriers
that come up often cause an individual to leave behind a goal. It’s like running into a
wall, and then you run away from it. Suppose you want to go from a classroom
teacher to a principal. Before you act and pursue this goal, ask yourself.

Why do I want to achieve this goal? “Why is this important to me?”

Career planning will help maximize your potential and satisfaction in your
work. It will give you confidence that you are in charge of your career and life and
you have the power to decide, act, and do what you want to accomplish your goals.
In career planning, make an effort to look for mentors who can assist you along the
way.

The Career Ladder of a Teacher

The Department of Education has initiated the implementation of a Teacher
Education and Development Program (TEDP) that seeks to conceptualize the career
path of a teacher. TEDP reflects a continuum that begins with one’s entry to a teacher
education program and culminates when a teacher reaches retirement from formal
service. TEDP conceptualizes a teacher’s career path as a continuum that starts with
entry to a teacher education program and concludes when a teacher reaches
retirement from formal services.

The Seven Domains of the National Competency – Based Teacher Standards

(NCBTS)
What does NCBTS stand for?

It is an integrated theoretical framework that defines the different dimensions of

effective teaching.

National Competency-Based Teacher Standards

The Philippine NCBTS has defined what Effective Teaching is. It has clearly
stated the strategic and indispensable role of the Teacher in the learning process of
the students.

According to the Framework “This will allow teachers to self-assess their own
performance against the Competency Standards in order to identify areas of strength
as well as areas that need to be developed further in order for them to function more
effectively as facilitators of learning.”
Domain 1. Social Regard for Learning (SRFL). This domain focuses on the
ideal that teachers serve as positive and powerful role models of the value in the
pursuit of different efforts to learn. The teacher’s action, statements, and different
types of social interactions with students exemplify this ideal. Domain 2. Learning
Environment (LE). This domain focuses on importance of providing a social,
psychological and physical
WEST VISAYAS STATE UNIVESITY 5
LAMBUNAO CAMPUS
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
Lambunao, Iloilo

environment within which all students, regardless of their individual differences in

learning, can engage in the different learning activities and work towards attaining
high standards of learning
Domain 3. Diversity of Learners (DOL). The DOL domain emphasizes the ideal
that teachers can facilitate the learning process even with diverse learners, by
recognizing and respecting individual differences and by using knowledge about their
differences to design diverse sets of learning activities to ensure that all learners can
attain the desired learning goals.
Domain 4. Curriculum (Curr.). The curriculum domain refers to all elements of
the teaching-learning process that work in convergence to help students understand
the curricular goals and objectives, and to attain high standards of learning defined in
the curriculum. These elements include the teacher’s knowledge of subject matter and
the learning process, teaching-learning approaches and activities, instructional
materials and learning resources.
Domain 5. Planning, Assessing & Reporting (PAR). This domain refers to the
alignment of assessment and planning activities. In particular, the PAR focuses on
the:
(1) Use of assessment data to plan and revise teaching-learning plans;(2)Integration
of assessment procedures in the plan and implementation of teaching-learning
activities, (3) Reporting of the learners actual achievement and behavior.
Domain 6. Community Linkages (CL.) The LC domain refers to the ideal that
classroom activities are meaningfully linked to the experiences and aspirations of the
learners in their homes and communities. Thus, this domain focuses on teacher’s
efforts directed at strengthening the links between schools and communities to help in
the attainment of the curricular goals.
Domain 7. Personal Growth & Professional Development (PGPD). The PGPD
domain emphasizes the ideal that teachers value having a high personal regard for
the teaching profession, concern for professional development, and continuous
improvement as teachers.

Why Do We Need the NCBTS?

*Provides a single framework that defines effective teaching in all aspects of a

teacher’s professional life & in all phases of teacher development.
*Minimizes confusion about what effective teaching is.
*Provides a better guide for all teacher development programs.

Test Taking Preparation Skills and Strategies

Test Taking Strategies: Test Taking: Preparation Skills

https://library.defiance.edu. Retrieved June 2021

In college, tests are a tool for assessing your understanding of the information
presented in your courses. Tests also indicate how well you have prepared and the
effectiveness of your study skills. Here are some suggestions to prepare for tests and exams:

 Gather information about a test—the more you can find out, the better you can
prepare. Read over the syllabi and class assignments so you know specifically which
chapters and topics will be included on the test. Listen to the instructor’s
description of the test and the topics or chapters that the test will cover. Talk to
other students who have already taken the course or tutors who are familiar with
the course.
 Review your study tools and materials—review your lecture and text notes.
Make this something that you incorporate into your daily study so that you will
not be overwhelmed at test time.
 Create summary notes— these are notes that specifically include information you
need to review further before the test.
 Predict test questions—an excellent method for preparing for tests is to predict
the questions that will be on the test. Understand the types of questions on the
test as well as the content needed to answer the questions will reduce text anxiety.
 Review with others—review sessions with another student or a study group is
an effective way to receive immediate feedback about the topics you
understand clearly and those that you need to review.
 Use a five-day study plan— this is a plan of action that helps you organize your
materials and time to review

Test Taking Strategies

https://www.educationcorner.com/Retrieved June 2021

Read and familiarize yourself with proven test preparation tips and strategies for
improving test performance.

Once you have a solid command of the subject matter and material that will be
presented on your test, it's time to put in some basic test taking strategies that have
proven effective for thousands of students. Remember, you must adapt test-taking
strategies to the specific type of test you're taking.

1. Be prepared
WEST VISAYAS STATE UNIVESITY 9
LAMBUNAO CAMPUS
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
Lambunao, Iloilo

There is no substitute for preparation. If you haven't studied throughout the

semester. If you haven't reviewed prior to test day. If you don't know the test material, all
the test taking strategies in the world won't save you. Preparation is key.

 Spend as many hours as necessary to understand the material that will be covered
on the test well enough to achieve a high score.
 Since teachers often slightly modify information on tests to determine if students
have a good understanding of concepts, spend time on honing test-taking skills.

2. Always arrive early and take a moment to relax

 You'll increase your confidence if you take time to relax.
 You'll be able to narrow your focus for the upcoming test.
 Arriving early may allow you time to ask any last minute questions from the
instructor or listen to explanations being provided to other students.

3. Listen attentively to last minute instructions given by the instructor

 It is not uncommon for teachers to alter test details at the last minute.
 If you miss test instructions, test taking anxiety will increase.
 If you miss test instructions, don't be scared to ask for instructions to be repeated.

4. Do a memory dump
A memory dump can be a particularly useful strategy for improving performance on
certain types of tests.
 As soon as you begin the test, write down information that you will likely need to
know for the test and you fear you may forget. (ie., formulas, equations, dates, lists,
etc.)

5. Read the test directions very carefully and watch for details
 Test questions and directions often contain valuable information. Always read all
directions carefully to ensure you understand what is being asked.
 It is not uncommon to have two correct answers on a multiple choice question. Pay
attention to details.
 Frequently, test instructions will notify students that they only need to complete
two questions, but there will be 5 options.

6. Plan how you will use the allotted time

 Take a moment to estimate how much time you'll have for each section of the test
and each question. Allow enough time for more difficult sections or sections that are
weighted more heavily in the final test grade.
 Pace yourself so you can complete the test in the allotted time frame.
 Complete the questions you know first then come back and tackle the problems
you're not sure about after.

7. Look for cues

 If two answers are similar, they're usually not the correct answer.
 Pay attention to grammatical matching between the question being asked and
answers. If an answer seems right but doesn't match grammatically with the question,
it probably isn't the correct answer.
 Look for cues from other questions.
WEST VISAYAS STATE UNIVESITY 10
LAMBUNAO CAMPUS
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
Lambunao, Iloilo

8. Answer all the questions

Even if you're running out of time and can answer all the questions fully, it's
important to answer all questions. Many professors will give partial credit for partially
completed questions or if you're able to show your work. (Note: There are some tests in
college where you are docked points for guessing. This is rare and usually will be announced
by the professor prior to the test.)

9. Maintain a positive attitude

 Do not lose confidence or waste time if you encounter confusing or difficult
questions. Answer the questions you know first.
 If you have no clue about the correct answer, make an educated guess if it will
not count against your score.
 Disregard patterns.

10. Rely on your first impressions

 The first answer that pops in your mind is usually the correct answer. Don't change
answers unless you're sure the answer you've chosen is wrong.
 It may be counterproductive to review answers and make changes – especially
if you're struggling to get through the test.

11. Plan to finish early and have time for review

 Go back and answer difficult questions after answering easy ones.
 If you are required to complete an essay, review it for spelling and
grammatical errors.
 Check to make sure you have completed the entire test. It is not uncommon for
questions to be listed on the opposite side of a page.

12. Consider every test a practice session - analyze your performance

 It takes time and practice to develop effective test taking skills.
 To determine whether your test taking strategies are working, take time to evaluate
your performance after each test.
 Be sure to take note of where you're struggling. Are you struggling with essays or
multiple choice questions?
 Arrange to meet with teachers to discuss low test scores to determine what you can
do to improve. This is highly recommended if you struggle with essay questions.

Tips On How To Pass the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) the First Time
Bautista, R., Licensure Examination for Teachers. https://www.teacherph.com.
Retrieved June 17, 2021.

The Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) is administered twice a year specifically in
March and September. The big day is coming, and you are unsure of what’s waiting!
Probably, the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) is one of the toughest tests being
taken nationwide.

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

1. TIME TO BEFRIEND NOTES AND JOURNALS!

If you’re a type of person who likes to write down things, this won’t be a problem to
you, but if writing something down on the paper is not your thing, well, it’s about time that
you consider it to be a part of your daily routine. Research shows that when you write a
thought or an idea on a paper, the more you will remember it. Writing on a paper stimulates
a part of your brain that makes you remember things more than just typing it on your cell
phone or your gadget. So take the time to consider writing!

2. SET A SCHEDULE

Of course, the scope of the test is so vast that you have to list down the topics and
courses that you have to review. It will be useful if you set a schedule for a particular week
or a specific month.Establishing a plan also keeps you on track, and it can help you
monitor what courses or subjects you need to pay attention too!

3. GET TO KNOW THE SCOPE AND CONTENT OF THE TEST

For you to successfully plot and plan your schedule for reviews, you need to find out
the scope and content of the examination first. This is given by the PRC (Professional
Regulation Commission) months before the examination date. Each subject area will cover a
certain percentage of the test so make sure you give priority to those subjects which will
mostly cover the test.

4. REVIEW YOUR WEAKEST SUBJECT BACK IN COLLEGE

It is a big help. We all have a subject where we were weak at back in college, and so
it is now our time to focus on them and get ourselves refreshed. Remember that you have
to take off from your mind you are weak in any subjects. You may be slow in learning these
areas, but all you need to do is you should be confident that you can learn anything.
Typically, the reason why you are weak in a particular subject is that you don’t have
much interest in them. Give your one hour daily to that subject at any cost and also try for
some other option apart of reading the books for that particular subject. You can try
listening to the audios or practically try to learn the lessons or topics which will always
help you to understand the question in a better manner.

5. PRACTICE SHADING

Conditioning is important. We all know how to shade but making sure that we can
shade adequately and correctly. Remember that just by a wrong shading in one of the items
on the test questionnaire, you can get a failing mark so make sure how to shade correctly!

6. PRACTICE ANSWERING SITUATIONAL QUESTIONS

If not all, most of the questions in the test (especially in Professional Education) are
situational. Don’t just memorize facts and information. Try also to answer some review
questionnaires which will challenge your logical, reasoning, and analytical thinking skills.
WEST VISAYAS STATE UNIVESITY 12
LAMBUNAO CAMPUS
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
Lambunao, Iloilo

Practice reading longer problems or questions. This will surely train and condition your brain
to respond fast.

7. STAY HEALTHY AND THINK POSITIVELY!

We are talking about your holistic health. The physical, mental, and emotional
health must be balanced. Make sure that you don’t get too stressed, pressured, or
overwhelmed by your surroundings. Taking the exam is indeed a little frightening but don’t
think about the fear. Remember that it is a temporary feeling. Causing fear to yourself don’t
just result in a poor mental functioning but to a poor diet and bad feelings as well. Make
sure to manage yourself by thinking positively. Focusing on the positive outcomes especially
until you are waiting for the exam results will inevitably produce excellent results!

To stay healthy means to be ready in whatever activity you would have to engage in.
This means that when you are healthy during the test, your body would be conditioned
more to function well.

DIET

When it comes to your diet, you may feel like you deserve a treat, or that you don’t
have time to cook, but what you eat can really have an impact on energy levels and focus, so
keep away from junk food. Keep your body and brain well-fueled by choosing nutritious
foods that have been proven to aid concentration and memory, such as fish, nuts, seeds,
yogurt, and blueberries. The same applies to exam day – eat a good meal before the test,
based on foods that will provide a slow release of energy throughout. Sugar may seem
appealing, but your energy levels will crash an hour later.

KEEP HYDRATED

As a final tip, remember that being well hydrated is essential for your brain to work
at its best. Make sure you keep drinking plenty of water throughout your revision, and also
on the exam day.

8. HAVE TIME TO UNWIND

Set a day or two in a week when you only have few hours for review or no review
time at all. Remember that you also have to let your brain and body breathe and get some
fresh air. Anything that is done too much is not even good.

9. DO NOT OVERTHINK

Most of us are good at thinking about the “what-ifs” of our lives. If you are going to
overthink about the most negative scenario that you can ever imagine, stop it! The time you
would spend overthinking can be spent reviewing or doing something to get the outcome
that you desire. Not everything will always be under your control, but you can still do
something to at least affect the gravity of the situation. Overthinking always shuts out the
WEST VISAYAS STATE UNIVESITY 13
LAMBUNAO CAMPUS
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
Lambunao, Iloilo

solution and focuses more on the problem so don’t make time for it! Positive energy will
also start to radiate you if you stop overthinking!

10. SEEK THE ADVICE OF PROFESSIONAL TEACHERS YOU KNOW

If you are already working as a neophyte teacher in the school where you are
teaching at or if you chose to focus on your LET review instead of applying for a job, you
might as well seek for the advice of teachers who have already been through your situation.

11. ANSWER RANDOM TEST QUESTIONNAIRES

Challenge yourself to answer random test questionnaires from different online

sources or review materials. It will help you get used to the nature of the test and will
condition yourself to analyze questions in a timed manner.

12. GET EVERYTHING READY

Make sure you get everything ready well in advance of the exam – don’t leave it to
the day before to suddenly realize you don’t know the way, or what you’re supposed to
bring.

And of course, you should not miss doing the following:

 Know the exact location of the venue of the test (especially your seat and room
number)
 Check the rules and requirements for the exam.
 Prepare all the materials you will need for the exam. (e.g., pencil, black pen,
eraser, pencil sharpener, ruler, calculator, or scratch papers)
 Food or snacks, water, fan (because you might end up taking the test in a not
well-ventilated room), and handkerchief

13. PRAY

It’s always been proven effective. Don’t forget to rely on Him. He has good plans for
you, and if you always knock, he will still be ready to answer!
