DEEP WATER SUMMARY
Deep Water is about the writer’s journey of overcoming
the fear of water, which is deeply rooted in him since
childhood. The author started fearing water since the
age of four. It starts when he was visiting California
with his father. He visits a beach where a wave knocks
him down and sweeps over him. This terrifies the
author, although the father laughs at this knowing it was
no danger. However, this experience terrifies him and
develops a fear of water. After that, when the author is
11 years old, he experiences another incident which
escalates his fear.
He is at a swimming pool in Yakima, trying to learn
swimming. On one fine day, a bully decides to pull a
dangerous prank. He pushes him in the deep end of
the pool which frightens the author. He reaches nine
feet into the water and starts struggling desperately to
hold on to something. Moreover, he yells for help but
he starts feeling paralyzed and only his heart was
moving now. Thus, he gives up and readies himself to
die but wakes up at the side of the pool. However, the
terror he experiences while drowning never goes away.
It continues to haunt him for many years and even
spoiled his future expeditions concerning canoeing,
swimming, fishing and more.
He even visits Marine Lakes, Columbia, New Hampshire
and more but is not able to enjoy it. Thus, he decides to
overcome this fear by hook or by crook. He enrols
himself in a swimming class and tries to learn from the
instructor. The instructor teaches him many tips and
tricks for swimming. He begins with the inhaling and
exhaling part then he practices it for many weeks.
Further, he moves on to the kicking the legs on the side
of the pool. Finally, he combines all this with the final
move of swimming. Although the author knows how to
swim, he is still terrified of water. Thus, in order to get
rid of the fear, he decides to confront it. He mocks it by
thinking what can it really do? Consequently, he plunges
in to the water and to his surprise, his fear goes away. He
faced it in many places and at last, manages to conquer
it.
           RESILIENCE
Resilience refers to the ability to bounce back,
recover, and adapt in the face of adversity,
challenges, or significant stress. It is the capacity
to withstand and overcome difficult or traumatic
experiences and emerge stronger or more capable.
Resilience encompasses both emotional and
psychological strength, as well as the ability to
maintain a sense of well-being and balance during
times of uncertainty or difficulty. It involves being
able to adapt to change, manage stress, and
navigate setbacks or obstacles without being
overwhelmed or giving up.
Resilience is not about avoiding or denying
difficult emotions or experiences, but rather about
facing them head-on and finding healthy ways to
cope and recover. It involves developing skills and
strategies to build inner strength, maintain a
positive mindset, and persevere in the face of
challenges.
Resilience is a valuable trait as it helps individuals
and communities to thrive and grow despite
adversity. It can enhance one's ability to problem-
solve, make effective decisions, and maintain a
sense of purpose and motivation. Resilient
individuals often have a higher level of self-
confidence, perseverance, and optimism, which
enables them to overcome setbacks and achieve
their goals.
Overall, resilience is a dynamic and essential
quality that enables individuals to adapt, recover,
and thrive in the face of adversity. It is a skill that
can be developed and strengthened through
practice, support, and a positive mindset.
IMPORTANCE OF RESILIENCE
Resilience is a crucial trait that plays a significant role
in various aspects of life, from personal well-being to
professional success and community resilience. Here
are some of the key reasons why resilience is important:
 1. Coping With Adversity: Resilience helps individuals
bounce back from challenging and stressful
situations. It enables people to adapt to difficult
circumstances and maintain their mental and
    emotional well-being.
 2. Mental Health: Resilience is closely linked to mental
health. People with higher levels of resilience are
better equipped to manage stress, anxiety, and
depression. They can also recover more effectively
    from traumatic experiences.
 3. Emotional Intelligence: Resilient individuals tend to
have better emotional intelligence, which allows
them to understand and manage their own
emotions as well as empathize with others. This can
lead to healthier relationships and more effective
    communication.
 4. Problem Solving: Resilience encourages a problem-
solving mindset. When faced with setbacks, resilient
individuals are more likely to look for solutions and
alternatives rather than dwelling on the problem
5. Risk Taking: Resilience can lead to a more positive
attitude towards risk. People who are resilient are
more willing to take calculated risks, as they believe
in their ability to adapt and recover from potential
   failures.
6. Health And Well Being: Resilience has been
associated with better physical health. People who
can bounce back from health challenges or maintain
healthy habits are often more resilient.
7. Personal Success: Resilience is a valuable trait in the
workplace. It enables individuals to persevere
through setbacks, adapt to changing circumstances,
and maintain a positive attitude. This can lead to
   career growth and success.
8. Community Resilience: At a broader level, resilient
communities are better equipped to withstand and
recover from disasters, whether natural or man-
made. Communities with strong social bonds and
the ability to adapt are more likely to thrive in the
   face of adversity.
9. Personal Growth: Resilience is a key factor in
personal growth and development. It encourages
individuals to embrace challenges as opportunities
for growth and learning, leading to self-
   improvement.
10. Happiness and Life Satisfaction: Resilience
contributes to an overall sense of happiness and life
satisfaction. When individuals can bounce back from
setbacks and maintain a positive outlook, they tend
  to lead more fulfilling lives.
In summary, resilience is not only important for
individual well-being but also for building strong
and adaptable communities. It is a valuable trait that
helps people thrive in the face of adversity, learn
from their experiences, and lead more fulfilling
  lives
        Tips to build resilience
1. Positive Mindset: Resilience starts with cultivating a
positive mindset. This involves maintaining an
optimistic outlook and focusing on solutions rather
than dwelling on problems. A positive mindset allows
individuals to approach challenges with a sense of
hope and resilience, seeing them as opportunities for
growth and learning.
2. Effective Coping Mechanisms: Resilient individuals
have developed effective coping mechanisms to deal
with stress and adversity. They have healthy strategies
for managing difficult emotions, such as seeking social
support, practicing relaxation techniques, engaging in
hobbies, or seeking professional help when needed.
These coping mechanisms help individuals navigate
tough situations and maintain their emotional well-
being.
3. Flexibility and Adaptability: Resilience is closely tied
to the ability to adapt to change. Resilient individuals
are flexible and open to new possibilities. They are
willing to adjust their mindset, behaviors, and
strategies in response to changing circumstances. This
adaptability allows them to overcome obstacles, find
alternative solutions, and navigate transitions with
greater ease.
4. Social Support: Strong social connections and
support networks play a crucial role in resilience.
Having a reliable support system provides emotional
support, encouragement, and a sense of belonging.
Resilient individuals actively seek and maintain these
connections, recognizing the importance of leaning on
others during challenging times. Social support helps
individuals cope with stress, share their experiences,
gain different perspectives, and receive practical
assistance when needed.
5. Learning and Growth: Resilience involves viewing
setbacks and failures as opportunities for growth and
learning. Resilient individuals understand that mistakes
and challenges are a part of life. They reflect on their
experiences, identify areas for improvement, and
adjust their approach accordingly. This mindset of
continuous learning helps individuals develop
resilience and find new ways to overcome obstacles in
the future.
6. Self-Compassion: Resilience also involves practicing
self-compassion. Resilient individuals are kind and
understanding towards themselves, recognizing that
setbacks and challenges do not define their worth.
They treat themselves with kindness, patience, and
acceptance during difficult times. Self-compassion
allows individuals to bounce back from setbacks with a
healthy sense of self-worth and helps them maintain
resilience in the face of adversity.
In summary, resilience is the ability to bounce back,
recover, and adapt in the face of adversity. It involves
cultivating a positive mindset, developing effective
coping mechanisms, being adaptable, seeking social
support, embracing learning and growth, and
practicing self-compassion. By cultivating resilience,
individuals can navigate challenges, overcome
adversity, and thrive in their personal and professional
lives.
      7C's OF RESILIENCE
Dr Ginsburg, child paediatrician and human
development expert, proposes that there are 7
integral and interrelated components that make
up being resilient. The 7C's of Resilience are-:
1.COMPETENCE-: Competence refers to a child’s
ability to handle challenging situations on their
own. Children develop a sense of competence
when parents and caregivers allow them to make
their own decisions and do things independently.
2.CONFIDENCE-: Confidence is similar to
competence and refers to teaching a child to
believe in themselves. Children need confidence
to be able to navigate their world, think
creatively, and recover from setbacks.
Parents and caregivers can help children gain
confidence by encouraging them to try new things
and praising their efforts, even when they don’t
succeed.
3.CONNECTION-: Connection is the sense of
security that comes from close and healthy
relationships with family, friends, and the wider
community. Children form connections when they
spend quality time with other people, develop
close ties, and are allowed to express their
emotions freely .This sense of security and
connectedness gives children a strong foundation
and supportive network so they will be better
prepared to overcome obstacles and act
independently in the world
4.CHARACTER -: Good character refers to a child’s
integrity, responsibility, and fundamental sense of
right and wrong. These strong values form the
basis for making wise choices when faced with
difficult situations .Parents and caregivers can
help children build character by encouraging them
to be caring and demonstrating for them that
individuals' actions and behaviours affect those
around them.
5. CONTRIBUTION -: Contribution is the way that a
child can help make the world a better place.
Teaching children–even very young children–how
they can contribute to the world around them can
give them a strong sense of purpose and meaning.
Parents and caregivers can encourage children to
make good contributions by helping them identify
and consider other people’s needs and feelings
and emphasizing the importance of treating
others kindly.
6.COPING-: Coping refers to the mechanisms that
people utilize to deal with stressful situations in a
healthy way. Children who are able to cope are
more prepared to deal with difficult situations
later in their lives and will be less likely to fall into
negative behaviours such as depression, anger,
and substance abuse. Parents and caregivers can
help children learn to handle stress by teaching
them a wide repertoire of healthy coping
strategies (including creative solutions) and
modelling how they remain calm and cope with
stress in a positive way.
7.CONTROL-: A child experiences a sense of
control when they recognize that they can affect
situations in their lives. Children are more likely to
bounce back from difficulties when they realize
that they have some control over the outcome.
This feeling of control can help children learn to
make good choices because they realize that it
will have an impact. Parents and caregivers can
help children learn about control by
demonstrating how people’s actions lead to the
situations that they find themselves in and
teaching them how they can make a difference
themselves.
By developing these attributes individuals can
better navigate and overcome challenging
situations, leading to increased resilience.
      CONCLUTION
To sum up, Deep Water summery, we learn
that if we are determined enough and have
the courage, we can over come any fear that
comes our way without letting the fear
overpower us. It shoes the result of showing
courage in the face of fear in life but that
should not decide who we are especially
when it is about death. The fear of death
itself might prevent us from experiencing so
many wonderful things in life. William
Douglas set an example of this through his
biographical account of his experience with
the fear of water. He did not let the fear
overpower him, and his strong resolution to
eradicate this fear was successful after a long
process of hard work and determination.
