STRUCTURE CLASSIFICATION

1. General

A. A schematic breakdown of the aircraft structure showing the relationship

between primary and secondary structure and both the ’Fatigue Critical
Structure’ (FCS) and the ’Principal Structural Elements’ (PSE), is given
in Figure 1. These are identified as follows:
− Primary structure is on the left of the vertical line
− Secondary structure is on the right of the vertical line
− PSE is shown as a shaded/lined area within primary structure
− FCS is shown as a shaded area extending within the primary and
secondary structure. The FCS includes the metallic PSE and some other
structures.

B. Figure 2 identifies in general primary and secondary structure.

C. A list of PSE’s is given in this chapter where applicable.

D. The structure of the aircraft is classified either as primary or
secondary.

E. Primary structure is that structure which contributes significantly to

carrying flight, ground and pressurization loads.
F. Secondary structure is that structure which carries only air or inertial
loads generated on or within the secondary structure.

G. Within the primary structure there are elements that are designated PSE.
PSE’s are those elements that contribute significantly to carrying
flight, ground and pressurization loads, and whose integrity is essential
in maintaining the overall structural integrity of the airplane. The
metallic PSE are subsets of the FCS.

NOTE: Where two items that are PSE are connected together and the
connecting item is removable then the connecting item is also to
be considered as PSE.
H. Elements classified as FCS are either primary or secondary structure. FCS
are those structures that are susceptible to fatigue cracking that could
lead to a catastrophic failure of the airplane. A fatigue and damage
tolerance evaluation is required for all repairs made to FCS to ensure
compliance with §25.571 and related ageing aircraft requirements (See
Section 2 for approval of repairs).

The list of FCS contained within this chapter is compliant to Part 26.43
(b), and has been approved by the FAA. The Fatigue Critical structures
include the following:
− Metallic structures classified PSE

− Some structures whose failure or detachment could compromise continued

safe flight or landing by an adverse effect on a PSE. These structures
correspond to the detail design points as defined by §25.571.

2. Approval of Repairs

A. All repairs to the structure must be done in accordance with data

acceptable to the operator’s airworthiness authorities.
NOTE: Operators of Aircraft with STC (Supplement Type Certificate)
modification embodied are responsible to check with the STC−Holder
for any restriction of applicability before performance of repair
or allowable damage limits.
B. Acceptable data may include:
− Aircraft type relevant Structural Repair Manual (SRM)
− Airbus approved repair drawing or repair instruction
− Airline developed data approved by Airbus
− Airline / other DAH developed data.
C. In the case of repairs to any primary structure or fatigue critical
structure beyond SRM limits, it is recommended that Airbus approval is
obtained.

D. Airbus can assist in providing the necessary data for repairs in any of
the above cases.

4. Principle Structural Elements (PSE), Safe Life Items and Fatigue Critical
Structure (FCS) − Identification

The Fatigue Critical Structures include the following:

− Metallic structures classified as PSE
− Other structures that are not classified as PSE.

For safe life items, in case of a discrepancy between the SRM and the ALS
part 1, the latter must be considered.
