Philosophy of Education

Why teaching is easy for me since I was a child, I always knew I wanted to be an elementary

school teacher. The path has not been easy though due to some unfortunate events in the family I

went right from my parent’s house to the working field of Inventory. That also had some

unfortunate events and life lessons that sent me to CVS where I have been for the last 7 years. As

I worked my way through the ranks of CVS my pursuit of teaching became farther and farther in

the back of my mind. The last 6 months though really through everything in my life up in the air

the day I became a SMIT. It seemed like I finally truly made it in CVS. I was on my way to

becoming a Store Manager, however as I learned in the 3 months of the process this was terrible

choice. Between the constant mental breakdowns. The on the call expectations for your life, and

a District Leader who didn’t take any responsibility I needed to leave. That’s when it hit me that

I needed to leave retail and finally do what I have always had the passion to do. August hit and I

enrolled in college for the first time in my life. An instant boost to my health came with the fact

that I have a future that I will be proud of, and I just need to get through that storm.

The best part of college is my field observation assignments. Getting to watch different teachers

and observe their knowledge is so fascinating. The firsthand experience and how the children

react to not only their teacher but me has really shown me this is where I need to be. Being able

to fully incorporate my personality with children who have not given up on life is such a pleasure

and is night and day to the environment I work in now. Especially seeing how my presence alone

instantly boosts the moral of the children of color we have an instant connection because of our

cultural backgrounds. While I am once person, I know that alone can help start bridging the gap

of the minority percentage of African American teachers in the education field. This is also why

kindergarten is perfect for me. I want to show children’s education can be fun and not crippling.

I want to show children minorities can be teachers and this filed is wide open for them to join.

What I have learned from my observation teachers is your teaching style has to be diverse you

need to be able to teach instructional material but also understand when to assist your students

and adjust on the fly because everyday is filled with new surprises.

My future is bright because I know where I am going. Since dipping my toes into the classroom

world, I have an aura of happiness helping me get through my job now. I am currently focused

on short term goals and checking each box off as I complete them. Almost finished with my first

semester I have checked off just starting and when next December ends, I’ll be officially

certified to start subbing. That’s the focus and the next big step. This is crucial for me as

someone who struggles with learning from a book the physical and hands on nature is what helps

me really learn. The excitement of being able to learn from different classroom environments

and multiple groups of children is going to help guide me in the right direction of the teacher I

will become. Will be a core year for me ill be leaving retail forever and jumping head on into the

education world and finally fulfilling the dream I always had as a child.
