ABSTRACT

Computer is a veritable tool in a society that has become fiercely competitive

for national development. Computer is very vital for any country. This report
will serve as a good assistance to those that are just learning how to use a
computer. There are step by step instruction and explanation with adequate
diagrams and pictures to guide the learner on how to operate computer. The
Industrial Training Fund (ITF) has created an opportunity for the students to
lay hands on and operate those machineries which they are not opportune to
use in school. This is an avenue to bridge the gap between the school
operator and the society at large.

CHAPTER ONE
INTODUCTION
1.1 The goal of institutions and the industrial Training Fund (ITF) is to
produce skilled man power for the industry (i.e. the employers of labor) each
of these bodies must play for this deserving praise to be achieved. The school
must train the students in their various fields of Endeavour through Vocational
Education. Vocational Education is a form of Education either formal which
specially trains individual with some practical skill that are useful in his/her
choice of career.
Most of the graduate have turned out from our high Institution, do not
acquire enough practical skills that will enable them handle equipment’s and
machinery available in the industries after graduation, that is why in Nigeria
today, the Government is training graduates of the fields Engineering after
their graduation in school to equipped them practically to work in Government
industries.
The advancement in science and technology has enable the employers
of labor to acquire Sophisticated equipment and Machineries which are in
most cases not available for student use while in school, hence the need for
SIWES .
The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) has created an opportunity for the
students to lay hands on and operate those Machines which they were not
opportune to see in school, this is an avenue to bridge the gaps between the
school operators and society at large.
DEFINITION AND MEANING OF SIWES
(SIWES) means: STUDENT INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME.
It is a skill training programmed designed by ITF to make visible and prepare
students of Universities, Colleges of Education, Polytechnics, as well as
Colleges of Health and Technology for industrial work situation they are likely
to meet after graduation.

1
It was designed, initiated and established by (ITF) in 1973 to 1974 to solve
the problem of lack of adequate practical skills preparatory for employment in
industries by Nigerian Graduates of Tertiary Institutions. When it withdrew
from the scheme in 1978, the Federal Government handed over the scheme in
1979 to both National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in November
(1984), the Federal Government reverted the management and
implementation of the scheme to ITF and it was effectively taken over in July
1985, with the funding being the sole responsibility of the Federal
Government.
SIWES AS PART OF INSTRUCTION
In all institutions where Vocational Technical Education is offered, putting
theory into practices is the core issue in the curriculum of those institutions.
As a result, lots of hours had been allotted to practical lessons in the school.
Now SIWES has become part of institutions, a two (2) credits course and
condition for graduation. There is a need for students in higher institution of
learning to receive instruction on the condition and regulation guiding their
participation in the program. This is a motivating factor concerning the
production of the guideline to students.
OBJECTIVES OF SIWES
Some of the objectives of SIWES are:
- To provide an avenue for students in the Nigerian Student to acquire
industrial skills and experience during their course of study.
- To prepare students for the work situation they are likely to meet after
graduation.
- To allow the transition phase from school to the world of working
environment easier and facilitate student’s contact for their job
placement.
- To expose the students to work methods and techniques in handing
equipment and Machinery that may not be available in their universities.

CHAPTER FIVE
SUMMARY
From my personal experience in the (SIWES) SIWES has a great impact
in the life of student(s) who pass through the training and also Nigeria as a
whole in the aspect of economy.
Therefore, I urge the Federal Government and school management to
continue with this program to enable student have this working experience
which could help them to be self-employment in the absence of white collar
jobs.

RECOMMENDATIONS
ITF is to reduce unemployment and inability to operate sophisticated
equipments and machinery in our industries, I hereby recommend that:-
The (ITF) should not give up in running of this program since it enhances
learning.
Students who have completed the training should be compensated in order to
encourage the incoming ones.
The Federal Government should ensure the smooth running of this program
because it’s in their various fields of studies.
Also I recommend that student more especially in Business Education and
Computer Science Departments should try as much as possible to attach
themselves with computer training center for future self employment.

CONCLUSION
SIWES has brought skills to learners; result of findings has proved that
(SIWES) is very effective in the life of students who pass through it. It
increase the skills and ability to manage life in those students who have
trained in industries or business Centers and operation of the equipment they
lay hands on, which is very important in the life of a trained teacher. If
SIWES is properly taken care of, there is no doubt it will alleviate the
problems of unemployment and inability to perform as a learned person in
the wide world.
