HYPRON ® a Nexans Technology

Sustainable and innovative hydrocarbon
resistance by lead substitution
Julien TRUFLANDIER, Umberto AVANZINI
The cable design
General terms

1. Conductor
2. Insulation

3. Filler

4. Binder tape

5. Inner sheath
6. Armor
7. Outer sheath
The cable design
Functionalized inner sheath

• Purpose
• The functionalized inner sheath aims to complete the cable protections with additional resistance
to fluid & chemicals
• Risk of penetration of chemical products (acids, bases, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons)
towards the conductors,
• 2 technologies have to be considered as lead covering or HYPRON® technology from Nexans

General properties of functionalized inner sheath

 Water & moisture protection

HYPRON®  Aliphatic hydrocarbons protection

 Aromatic hydrocarbons protection
 Chemicals protection
A Nexans technology for aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons resistance
Lead covering
European regulation context

• Tougher and strongest regulations in Europe (REACh & RoHS):

– REACh: Registration, Evaluation, Authorization of Chemicals (1907/2006/EU Directive)
– RoHS: Reduction of Hazardous Substances (linked with WEEE) (2002/95/EU Directive, amended in
2011/65/EU Directive)
• Trend to ban or limit the use of lead components in cables
• Taking into account exposure of workers to these components
– Lead stabilizers in PVC Compounds
– Lead chromate pigments in coloured masterbatches

Lead as metal ?

“Our target has been to develop a new chemical barrier, safer to the person & to the environment”
Sustainable Development
Early development steps

« Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present

without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. »
Definition was established during the World commission on Environment and Development (WCED).

HYPRON® a Nexans technology
Global presentation

• As a optimized safety alternative to lead sheath, Nexans has developed a

new barrier for petrochemical environment, protecting against chemical &
petrochemical fluids
• HYPRON® technology is designed by construction of Aluminium tape
bonded with a co-extruded special chemical resistance polymer layer

Aluminium coated tape

sealed barrier against moisture and inorganic chemicals ingress

HYPRON® is complying with

Lead sheathing is also sensitive to multilayer performance protection
 Oxidative areas equivalent to lead protection
 Hydrogenated and peroxide areas as per EN 50288-7
 Acids
