Gaza
History of the Conflict
- Partition Plan - Israel Established as a State following WWII (1948) - Displacement of
Palestinian People
- Series of Wars between Israel and neighboring Arab nations Egypt and Syria
(Arab-Israeli War, Suez Crisis, Six-Day War, Yom Kippur) - Ending with Camp David
Accords - Boundaries as we know them established, but Palestinians still sought
self-governance
- First Intifada and Oslo Accords
- Second Intifada and West Bank Barrier Wall
- Hamas comes to power in Palestine - 2007 - Gaza is placed under an indefinite
blockade by Israel and Egypt (devastating humanitarian consequences)
- Frequent Surges of violence with disproportionate palestinian casualties - 2014, 2018,
2021
- Violent Suppression of protests
- Israeli “settler” incursions in West Bank
Political Facilitation and Implications
- US essentially unilateral support for Israel throughout its history

- Long claimed to support 2 state solution, but actions suggest otherwise

- Israel is the largest recipient of military aid from the US

- Allows IDF to continue acting with impunity (USA World Police?)

- Conditions for conflict worsen as Israel moves in increasingly conservative direction

- Netanyahu and his coalition inaugurated - ties to facilitators of the settler movement in the
West Bank

- Biden expresses doubt about Palestinian death toll - NSC’s John Kirby doubles down

- Western Governments Refusal to call for ceasefire - despite public sentiment

Background: Hospital Bombings
- In Gaza the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital was bombed 0n October 17, 2023.
- Supposedly, the bombing was caused by an Israel militant misfire.
- Israel is being looked at as “not responsible” as of October 18, 2023.
- This strike has killed hundreds and injured thousands, this has been the deadliest incident in
the Israel and Palestine feud, so far.
- In response to the brutality from Hamas, Israel has put up a blockade to and from Palestine.
- With this blockade, Israel is denying fuel, medical resources, and basic human resources with
the fear of Hamas intercepting these goods.
Impacts/Out comes from the bombing
- The head of Israel’s CDC has predicted and says will happen, that the Gaza Strip, and other
parts of Palestine, will run out of resources very soon due to the blockade.
- This blockade is causing more harm than good for the people of Palestine.
- Some examples are:

- There is a black out in the Gaza Strip, and other parts of Palestine, due to running out of fuel
which has caused mass injuries within hospitals.

- Some of these mass injuries are people dying on ventilators and doctors having to perform
surgery with flashlights.

- The people of Palestine wanting to leave for safety are stuck in the middle of this war and
Israel will not let them evacuate to Egypt due to the blockade.
Long-Term Effects This Conflict Will Create
- There have been increasingly more violence in Palestine
every day, more bombs are being dropped throughout all of
Palestine but specifically in Gaza, which will have extremely
long term effects on the people of Palestine

- While the bombings are the greatest threat right now, there
are also countless other fatal threats and problems happening
to the Palestinian people right now

- These threats have already created extensive injuries for

everyone affected. Of the thousands of people who have
been injured, the most common injury as of right now is the
shrapnel from gun wounds and bombings.
Long Term Effects This Conflict Will Create
- The treatment options that are being currently offered are extremely limiting due to
supply lines being cut off. In fact most hospitals in Gaza are only able to treat
emergency cases.
- Some long term effects from this conflict:
- Radiation damage (ARS)
- Pregnancy complications
- Genetic problems
- Eyesight and hearing loss
- Amputations

- Impactful long term treatment options and therapies

Journalism
-Inside of the region there has been an increase in false information through social media,
and news sources.

-Much of this is due to the influx of smartphones in recent years, and easily accessible
information that is not fact checked in time before it is spread.

-there has been an increase in hate speech and falsifying political policy.

-Images and videos in particular are problematic because they can be easily falsified using
AI technology.

-Is this an attempt to raise awareness, or is there a mallintent behind the lies being shared?

-Much of the misinformation being spread is coming from inside the conflict area which has
led to distrust of leading officials.
Journalism continued
-There has been over 50 reporters injured or killed since the main gaza attack, the israeli
government also cannot insure any reporters safety.

-Because of the infrastructure damage many people do not have access to service.

-Therefore it is becoming what is known as an information blackout.

-Because of the black out and the increase in propaganda citizens are not able to report
what horrific things are truly happening and they are losing representation.

-because of this is people are spreading misinformation in order to spark a reaction from
others.

-The spread of propaganda is also seeing increase because of AI generated media

-There is a program called FakeReporter which consist of 2500 people trying to combat
misinformation.
Conclusion
- The violence that is taking place, and the measures that hamas are going to are only
getting worse, and this need for credible information to grow our support is becoming
more and more important

- We can look to the history of this situation and see a common theme in which support
for israel will always be there, by understanding the history of this conflict, and
studying the one going on maybe we can prevent or improve on our aid for conflicts to
come.
