Culminating Project: Comic Book Creation
1. Let’s take a look at the history of comic books creation: PP Presentation in class
2. Think of a story that you could create. Write it down. Give it a title.
Take the time to write a script. It doesn't need to be fancy and you don't need an expensive app
to get it done. A simple text editor will do. However, if you're looking for a more robust app for
writing, my preference is Scrivener.
When it's time to write your script, there are four main points to keep in mind:
Know your genre
Understand your main character's goals/challenges
Create a believable setting
Include a beginning, a middle, and an end
3. Create a timeline showing the main events of your story
Example:
4. Create a story board
After we created the timeline we should break all the big events down to the smallest ones.
Your viewer should be able to understand your story without reading it in advance.
Think about: where event is happening, who is participating, what action your character/s is/are
performing.
Use a template or work on paper to create a storyboard.
Example of a storyboard:
When creating a storyboard don’t think about details. It’s just a brief representation of your
future comic book.
Template:
5. Start working on the final copy of your pictures
After your storyboard is done and you place all the events in the right order we can start
working on your final images. This time we need details, but don’t apply color yet.
All the details should be drawn first.
Example:
6. Color.
After we done with drawing, let’s talk about the ways of coloring a comic book:
There’s one rule. Chose a set of colors for the whole book. What it means? It means that you
want to limit your color choice in order to save an original color emotion.
Another rule, decide at the beginning what type of graphics you want to present. Do you use
dots or lines to show volume? Or you work with colors? Is it realistic, or cartoonish?
Examples:
7. Work on the page alignment
Decide how many images you include in a page. Let’s take a look at the page layout. It is a
perfect example:
8. Add text and text balloons to your images. After we are done coloring and aligning its time to
put words on top. There are 3 rules.
All the descriptions are generally in the squared box on top of the page
Thinking is in a bubble
Talking is in this kind of balloon
Loud sound can look like this
9. Cover page
After we done with our story let’s think about the cover page. Cover page should reflect and
represent the main idea of your story. It could be drawn and painted differently. It should
include the title of your comic book.
Example:
10. Print
When we added all the necessary elements, lets print!
