Bulking of Sand

The document outlines an experiment to test the bulking of sand, which is the increase in volume of sand due to moisture content. The procedure involves measuring the weight and volume of dry sand, adding water incrementally, and observing the changes in volume. The results indicate a bulking percentage of 13.33%, showing that bulking increases with moisture content until a maximum point is reached, after which it decreases.

EXPERIMENT NO-4

TITLE-BULKING OF SAND

AIM-TO TEST BULKING OF SAND

THEORY-Fine aggregate i.e, sand has the tendency to increase in volume (bulk)depending upon
the amount of molecule present in it, specially when batching is done by volume the quantity of
sand in each batch has to be related to the volume of cement otherwise the batch shall be richer
than specified. Therefore it is necessary to the amount of sand use by % bulking which is =
(bulked volume-dry volume)/dry volume*100.

APPARATUS- A container, graduated cylinder , beaker ,metal tray ,steel rod, weighing balance
,sample of oven dried sand.

PROCEDURE

1. Taking sufficient quantity of oven dried sand and fill in the graduated cylinder up to
certain fixed mark .
2. Empty the sand into the container and weigh it.
3. Calculate the weight of the sand and after deducting the weight of container.
4. Add 1%by weight of sand and mix it thoroughly.
5. Fill the graduated cylinder now with this sand (moist)and note its volume.
6. Increase the % of water every time by 1% and note its volume after filling in the
graduated cylinder
7. Go on increasing the % of water by the same increment till the volume of the sand start
decreasing and sand comes to original volume i.e, volume of dry sand.

OBSERVATION TABLE

Weight of oven dried sand = 0.237 kg

Height of oven dried sand in cylinder (h1) = 150 mm

WEIGHT OF WEIGHT OF TOTAL HEIGHT OF SAND IN BULKING %
SAND ADDED WATER % CYLINDER(h) ( h-h1)/h*100

237 11.85 5 155 13.33

237 23.7 10 170 13.33

237 35.55 15 150 13.33

% Bulking =(h1-h)/h= (170-150)/150 x 100 =13.33%

CONCLUSION

From the graph it shall be seen that bulking increases with increase in moisture content up to a
certain point (maximum) then it decreases to practically nil when sand is fully saturated .

NOTE

The extend of bulking varies with moisture content of sand but it is governed by in film
thickness of water around its particles and particle size i.e,grading

PRECAUTIONS

1. No sand should be lost while transferring .

2. All the equipment used should be perfectly clean.

RESULT

% Bulking of sand =13.33 %
