Influence and Role of Civil Engineering
What comes to mind when you hear the term civil engineering? Of
course one of them is related to buildings, right? This thinking is not wrong
considering that civil engineering works on all aspects of infrastructure
starting from planning, designing, building, managing and maintaining
everything related to infrastructure, and one form of infrastructure is
buildings.
According to Watson, the term civil engineering was first used in the
18th century to distinguish the newly recognized profession from military
engineering, this profession was related to designing and carrying out
structural work that served the general public. Civil engineering is a branch
of engineering that focuses on the design, manufacture, management and
maintenance of various facilities and systems that support rural and urban
life. Basically, civil engineering is a field that involves the design,
construction and maintenance of infrastructure. The branches of knowledge
in civil engineering are also broad, ranging from construction management,
geotechnics, transportation, hydrology, building structures, environmental
engineering, to civil engineering informatics.
Civil engineering is one of the majors that can be taken at university.
Given the breadth of civil engineering, civil engineering graduates have a
variety of career choices. Starting from building construction consultants,
geotechnical experts, environmental management experts, construction
managers, city planners, water resource planners, transportation engineers
and many more.
A career in civil engineering is very rewarding and has an important
role in society and the country. Don't forget that infrastructure which is the
focus of civil engineering science is the wheel that moves a country. In more
detail, here are some of the roles of civil engineering sciences and experts for
the country.
First, in developing the nation's infrastructure. Infrastructure serves
various purposes such as transportation, electricity supply, water distribution
and civic space. It is important for a country to have up-to-date and up-to-
date infrastructure. This is because infrastructure is related to economic
development and community welfare. Infrastructure such as roads, bridges,
and airports facilitates trade and allows businesses to develop and the
economy to grow.
Then, the role of civil engineering in developing transportation
networks. Efficient transportation is one of the characteristics of developed
countries. Apart from being responsible for roads, railways, air travel, sea
ports, metro etc. The role of civil engineering is also to determine or measure
people's needs for transportation modes, so that later they can provide
recommendations regarding safe, fast and efficient transportation facilities.
In terms of environmental protection, in the process of creating
infrastructure a civil engineer must also consider the environmental impacts
caused. They develop systems that protect the environment from pollution
and play a role in monitoring activities such as waste management,
facilitating the integration of environmentally friendly energy into
infrastructure and much more.
Water resources management is also one of the skills learned in civil
engineering. A civil engineer must be able to manage water resources
efficiently. They regulate and maintain the quality and quantity of water, for
example by building facilities such as dams, irrigation canals, wells, etc.
Civil engineering is also an important pillar of a country's economic
development, not only because infrastructure is the key to economic
movement but because civil engineering is closely related to the construction
sector. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia's
construction sector contributed 10.7% to National GDP. Meanwhile, when
viewed from the perspective of labor revenue, the construction sector
contributes 6.08% or is sixth behind agriculture as the sector capable of
accommodating the largest workforce, namely 29.04%. (PUPR, 2020).
Civil engineering is ultimately an important field that contributes to
the development of society and the progress of a country in various ways.
From conceptualizing and designing infrastructure to creating and
maintaining it, civil engineering is involved in every stage of the process.
This field provides important employment opportunities and continues to
evolve to meet future challenges. As society grows and changes, the role of
civil engineering will become increasingly important for the country to create
sustainable and functional infrastructure for all communities.

(Paraphrase: Civil engineering has a central role in the progress of society

ever-expanding job opportunities to address future challenges. With the
growth and transformation of society, the crucial role of civil engineering is
