Akuonuo

Khezhie
Born and raised in Kohima, Akuonuo Khezhie is living the dream that many
young girls from our region have… of becoming a successful model.
Her journey began when she was crowned Miss Kohima, and then walked
away with the Miss Nagaland crown, and went on to win the Miss North-
East in 2002. But her real break came when she was short-listed as one of
25 finalists at the Femina Miss India 2007 Beauty Pageant.

Beauty with brains


Akuonuo studied in Don Bosco School and completed her Higher Second-
ary Studies in Mezhür Higher Secondary School, and went on to do her
graduation at Delhi University in Political Science. Akuonuo has worked
with the NGO, Reflorescence Society, Nagaland. She hopes to become a
social worker, working for the benefits of the STs, SCs and the minorities.

On identity-
She went as a proud Northeasterner and a Naga and did what her heart
said was right -----I don’t believe in making compromises since we are
proud of our heritage and culture. I firmly believe that the people of NE
get side-lined because they don’t stand firmly by their beliefs.

Her passion and Family


I enjoy listening to music, reading and dancing. I am also very passionate
about the Tibetan cause and the Dalai Lama. I am very close to my family
(parents, brother, uncles) and I yearn to return from time to time to my
hometown to spend time with family and friends.
Passion for me is to be loyal to ones ideology and also to your close ones.
Loyalty and truth are inseparable because that is the foundation of values
I was brought up on.

Fashion today
Opportunities are more but there is a lot of stereo typing. Our looks get
more appreciated abroad than in India. Yet one has to be committed in
the fashion industry. I never aspired to be a model but when it happened
I thought that I should do it with dignity. My advice to all who want to
join this line is to be confident and focused because there is many a slip
between the cup and the lip.

My mantra in life is ‘live and let live.’
