This document provides a method for testing the resistance of primer films, paints, and coatings to water immersion. Test pieces are immersed in water at either 40°C or 50°C depending on whether they are metal or plastic. After removal, the test pieces are evaluated on a scale of 0 to 9 based on the percentage of surface area showing blistering. For plastic parts, adhesion is also tested according to standard NF ISO 2409 after 24 hours of drying. Test reports must include the conditioning duration, test details, and any issues affecting the results.

1. SCOPE

The objective of this method is to determine the resistance of a film to immersion in deionised water.

2. PRINCIPLE

A degree of blistering after immersion is determined in a container filled with water.

3. EQUIPMENT

3.1. PHOTOGRAPHIC RATING SCALE (see appendix 3)

3.2. TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED CONTAINER WITH LID as per drawing in Appendix 1

3.3. THERMOPLUNGER enabling to obtain a bath temperature of 40 °C ± 2 °C

3.4. GROOVED SUPPORT as per drawing in Appendix 2

3.5. GRADUATED THERMOMETER 0 °C to 100 °C ± 0.5 °C

3.6. CLIMATIC CHAMBER at 23 °C ± 2 °C and 50 % ± 5 % relative humidity

3.7. ABSORBENT PAPER, like Joseph.

4. REAGENT

Deionised water with resistivity of 200 000 ohms/cm, which will be renewed once a month.

5. PREPARATION OF THE TEST PIECES

- Sheet metal plate with minimum dimension of 90 mm × 190 mm × 0.95 mm ± 0.05 mm; these plates
will be covered with the scheme indicated in the specification.

- Plastic plate with minimum dimension of 90 mm × 190 mm × 0.5 mm ± 0.05 mm or full parts; these
plates will be covered with the scheme indicated in the specification.

6. CONDITIONING OF THE TEST PIECES

The test pieces will be conditioned between 24 h and 5 days in the climatic chamber (3.6.), according to
the indications in the specifications.

7. OPERATING PROCEDURE

7.1. CASE OF SHEET METAL PLATES

- Fill the container with deionised water (4.) until the reference mark, start the thermoplunger (3.3.), adjust
it in such a manner as to obtain a temperature of 40 °C ± 2 °C.

- Place the test pieces on the radiated support

- Close the lid.

- Take out the test pieces after 10 days.

- Wipe the test sample using absorbent paper (3.7.).

7.2. CASE OF PLASTIC PARTS

- Fill the container with deionised water (4.) until the reference mark, start the thermoplunger (3.3.), adjust it in
such a manner as to obtain a temperature of 50 °C ± 2 °C.

- Slash the coating up to the support, using a cutting tool, forming a cross having branches 100 mm long
(non-restrictive optimal conditions).

RENAULT D23 1327 / - - C

- Place the test pieces on the radiated support

- Close the lid.

- Take out the test pieces after 3 days.

- Wipe the test sample using absorbent paper (3.7.).

8. STATEMENT OF RESULTS

Examine the test pieces 60 min after taking them out of the bath, using the series of ten views in Appendix
1 materialising a degree of blistering with the rating of 0 to 9 based on the following descriptions:

0 No blistering

1 - 10 % of the surface blistered

2 - 20 % " "

3 - 30 % " "

4 - 40 % " "

5 - 50 % " "

6 - 60 % " "

7 - 70 % " "

8 - 80 % " "

9 - 90 % " "

For plastic parts:

In addition to this rating, the adhesion test should be performed according to the Standard NF ISO 2409, 24h
after removal from the bath; the rating will be the same as indicated in the Standard NF ISO 2409.

9. TEST REPORT

In addition to the results obtained, the test report shall indicate:

- Reference of this method,

- Duration of test piece conditioning,

- Procedural details not specified in this test method together with any incidents that might have affected
the results.
