Introduction
• Immunohematology, or IH for short, is more widely known by Medical
Technologists as Blood Bank (BB) or Blood Banking and this course
(subject) may be called either way.
• Immunohematology = IH = Blood Bank = BB
• In the hospital setting, this laboratory section is called Blood Bank
instead of IH.
• As the name suggests, IH involves immunologic reactions (-immuno)
between Red Blood Cells (-hema) and antibodies.
• Thus, most of its laboratory principles involves
HEMAGGLUTINATION
Introduction
• This course (subject) used to be placed in 3rd Year Summer with
Immuno-serology (IS) as a pre-requisite subject.
• In the new curriculum, it coincides with IS in the 2nd semester and the
laboratory principles involved in IH will be discussed in IS.
• IH might be tricky to learn at first especially that the general
Agglutination principle will be covered in the Final Term in IS but
once you get the hang of it, you’ll get to see that course is very simple
and straight-forward (Again, since most of its laboratory principles
involves HEMAGGLUTINATION)
