1. Definition
Etymologically, Epistemology comes from knowledge rate, science and word ligos
d'essa say from the episnemes theory of scientific knowledge. It is conceived as
the discourse on science or discourse, which is still the critical study of science
and scientific knowledge. Vênude is a critic of science. It is the philosophy of
science having as its object the critical study of scientific principles and
approaches, their methods and their results. It is also the study of sciences aimed
at assessing their value for the human mind. We can still undo it as science which
essentially aims at the critical study of the techniques, hypotheses and results of
the various sciences. She seeks to determine their logic.
It is however important to note that when Yon approaches episteπιλογής for the
first time, one must be careful because the meaning of the term varies. Not
epistemology, we generally refer to a specialized branch of philosophy, the theory
of knowledge, French speakers for their part rather use the term to designate Téade
of scientific theories. In fact, as Pierre Jacob rightly notes, both meanings are
etymologically justified, because the Greek word epistêmê (which is opposed to the
word doxa which means "opinion") can sometimes be translated by the word 'science',
sometimes by the word "knowledge" -1. We can reconcile these two meanings by
speaking, in a very general way, of epistemology as well as the theory of
scientific knowledge. In all the texts that we will find on this site, we will
first and foremost use this meaning, closer to the French side of the term.
(1) "Epistemology is the theory of knowledge. In our pistemological investigations,
we reflect on the criteria to which true knowledge should conform (HARRE, 1984),
(2) “Epistemology is the part of the philosophy of science which considers the way
in which knowledge is organized” (FOUREZ, 1988)
(3) "This word designates the philosophy of science, but with a more precise
meaning. (...) It is essentially the critical study of the principles, hypotheses
and results of the various ences, intended to determine their logical origin (not
psychological), their value and their objective meaning." (LALANDE, 1991).
(4) "Epistemology (or theory of knowledge), study of the nature, structure and
limits of knowledge; its main subdivision is the philosophy of science, study of
the structural nature and limits of scientific knowledge". (VAN PARIJS, 1982)
Epistemology is therefore the object of study of science and, analytical and
reflective, it constitutes in this sense a second degree approach examining a
primary activity. In other words, it takes care to abstract from the things aimed
at by the science which it itself takes as its object, (...) it me as an exclusive
domain of study , not what science focuses on (...), but what it says about it.2 »
As such, it therefore in no way aims to advance knowledge or explore new empirical
fields, for example the observation of the stars or questions. It would rather be,
without doubt, the object and project of science itself. In fact, mology studies
the formation and structure of scientific concepts and theories. Daughter he also
on the procedures and methods adopted by men of science. To be
